I have lived in Chaing Mai 2 years and the police are as nice as the people.Thats why Thailand feels like home.I look at places i would want to raise my kids to be in safiest place with friendliest people.After 47 years on this earth my feet has found a true home.God Bless Thailand for such beautiful people.🙏

I definitely agree about the 1970s being more fun. I haven’t been to Chiang Mai in 20 years, but I’ll be sure to visit in the fall to avoid the bad air quality. Thanks for sharing your video.

Good to hear your health is up. I should have the wherewithal to be a globe trotter; I could ponder and philosophize while gazing upon new places, and peoples. I am trying to get back to my reading as well. I prefer the great classics from ancient Greece onward. Reading "Paradise Lost" right now; just finished "Walden's Pond".......... God send the rain to Chiang Mai.

Our village Songkran parade goes down right down my Mother in Laws street. But with the 100F and over temperatures, at a non AC home- No way my wife and I are going to sit in that heat. Great to hear the health news Bill!

Hi Bill. I’ll be arriving for 30 days, starting May 1. That was ch😮Owen specifically to avoid Songran and burning season. The lady that watches my house has had headaches and respiratory problems for the last 2 months. I’ve told her to stay at my house in air conditioning but she won’t. I’ve got 6 more immunotherapy sessions, so I hope to be done sometime in September. The only problem that I have is for them to find a vein to poke. In the 50 years that I’ve given blood, it’s never been easy finding a vein. I look for the oldest nurse because they should have the most experience in finding veins. After this trip. And the 30 day trip in December, I should have all work done on my house and landscaping and be able to enjoy retirement in CM in 2.5-3 years from now.

That sounds about right , this year for some reason the air really is having a nasty effect on people that normally never had issues . I know that feeling as well looking for the right spot . Since I have stopped and been off a while its not as hard to draw my blood now . Im still dealing with the side effects but they get less and less each week that goes by ... By May I hope this air will clear . I want outside so bad ...

If you like books based in Thailand I'd recommend Tim Hallinan's Poke Rafferty series. Also John Burdett's Sonchai series. Bangkok 8.

Smoke is bad Bill, i see Wayne (walkaboutwayne) has taken off down Sth and is having a great time, he had to get out of the smoke, don't blame him. i spoke to a fella that lived in CM many decades ago and he said it was a wonderful city and the Air was very clear, he said he was one of the first people in CM to have a phone (early Mob or similar) but his Bosses payed for it.(cost heaps)

Books. Here is a recommendation. Sort of "police" related - A book (autobiography) by Frank Buttino called "A Special Agent". About his life as a closeted gay with the FBI in San Diego. Me and friends (not FBI or police) use to meet with the younger crowd of FBI agents in San Diego for lunch occasionally and he was part of the FBI group. Never knew he was gay at the time and only learned of it when the book came out. They were definately all a pretty much an ass kicking group of guys. (This was back in the mid 1980's, WOW time flies!!!)

Couple of questions: What does the Songkran festival celebrate and what type of books do you prefer to read? I have a Nook so I can do the electronic thing and there is a great variety of subjects available and some libraries in the US loan them for free. Oh and what is the source of the air pollution there?

Its a time when Thai pay homage to there elders . The water comes by pouring over there hands and also on the statues of Budha. Me I like none fiction books . I am now reading Geddy Lees book , I ve read one of Niel Pearts books and have two more of his .

Yea, I agree with you, my nose, throat, and eyes are burning and more headaches this year. I didn't remember that as much last year. Hopefully we get some rain soon.

I was with my wife, one of my first visits in Thailand in the late 90s and I think we were in Chiang mai but we were pulled over and she was going to get a ticket, she offered some money right there and he took the money and just walked away. I don't know if this was because she was Thai or not. She had told me about this before hand but to see it first hand was surprising.

I was watching the local authorities burning off the dead grass along the highway to Khon Kaen. The air was disgusting and we were luck to see two hundred meters down the road. As for the AQI in Sydney Bill it was 28 today.

Why doesn't the government do something about the fires. I ride motorbikes and all up around Samoeng and up behind Doi Sakat there are Thais lighting fires burning all the undergrowth. There are fires everywhere. It can't be that hard for the government to deal with it. Right now it appears the government has no control over the people

I was visiting Chiang Mai long before those pigeons showed up at the gate. I have watched their population grow and wish officials would do away with them. Many years ago, I knew a guy that’s health declined due to those pigeons to the point he became disabled.

I think, or at least hope, that the worst of the tourists will remain in the south of the country where the hard partying tends to take place more. It's a shame how people act when they are away from hime. Most wouldn't think about that stuff at home!

when i was in chiangmai during songkran festival the thai people told me to stay inside to dangerous .... they told me thai's and tourists get crazy and drunk at that time what will add the cannabis to it ????

ChiangMai is the most polluted region or city in the world, a great place to open a smoke house if you want to cut your operating costs as a business!

Hi Bill, it’s a shame Songkran has to be ruined every year by the pollution. It’s such a happy positive holiday for most Thais but the pollution just ruins it. I’m in Bangkok it’s 170 Red today. I don’t know how you guys handle purple readings over 200. I think they said Chiang Mai was the most polluted city in the world. I’m sorry if I sound negative but after 7 years living in Bangkok it’s getting very tiresome and dangerous.

Yes difficult to live with this much pollution , we normally leave suring this time , but last two years and year before we were pretty much stuck here to ride it out
