Greetings from the UK, I have watched your videos for years and forget to thank you guys enough. In these awkward times you show us all the beauty of the world and what is really important, friends and family and living your life. Sierra is such a bundle of joy, such a lovely smile, and when she grows into an adult she will realise what a special upbringing she had. Thanks again and fair winds

S.V. DELOS, WELCOME to the waters of my youth and first sailing experiences. I was 9 1/2 in 1958 when my family first bought a 59 foot sloop and we started sailing Long Island Sound out of Essex on the Connecticut River with the help of family friends as crew. That lasted one year before we tired of the craziness and my dad with a crew of four men sailed her up to Maine where we had a summer home four generations. I relish seeing you Adventures from Block Island to Maine. Fair Winds and Following Seas! ALL-A-Taut-O! sdh T.A.'67 in CT

Block Island: a little piece of Heaven that fell to earth :) Magic abounds on that tiny island. One of my favorite places--though I'm not well-travelled, I believe that sentiment would hold true even were I a globesailer! I'm glad you had the opportunity to visit. Winter is true magic there--just the Island population and a few visitors; raw beauty; it's like the Island, sea, and wind are in conversation that you're left out of but free to try to glean and join

I'm a 7th generation family member of New England fishermen out of New Bedford-Fairhaven harbor/Buzzard's Bay that goes back to the whaling days and Herman Melville (head up further East North East for the best scallops on planet Earth!). Hearing you get a taste of the VHF chatter is absolutely hilarious to me. That's an average day around here. The best part of getting through Quick's Hole and turning South to the scallop fishing grounds is getting away from the noise. That's New England, even the bougie bastards who live on those Islands off Connecticut are feral as hell. We'll scream at each other, then we drink together and eat seafood pot pies, fisherman's platters and lobster rolls!

A tip for clams. Put them in a bucket with seawater and a sprinkle of corn meal the clams will begin feeding and as they do they will flush out the sand so there will be no grit when you eat them. it takes 6 to 8 hours so morning clams can be ready for dinner, Another method is to hang them in a net bag of the boat. Bon appetite!

As you guy travel north, if you want a very quiet anchorage, stop into Cuddyhunk Island. There is a small harbor (watch tides for entrance channel) but once you get in Cuttyhunk pond there is good holding. In season there is a shrimp cocktail boat in the afternoons (food 'truck') and sometimes a sweet roll boat that travels the harbor. There are only about 30 permanent residents on the island and a very small general store. Once you clear the north side of the canal, Plymouth harbor is very nice for anchoring with lots to see near the waterfront. Travel safe!

All the radio calls? Welcome to sailing Long Island, Fisher's Island and Block Island Sounds. Lot's of narrow channels inside of Fishers, lots of hazards, commercial fishing vessels, cargo/tankers, ferries and lots of recreational power boaters that do not follow the basic rules of the road. These are my home waters and I love it. We were in BI the same time as you. My wife thought I was nuts when I ran to get the binoculars to see you. You were off the boat when we went by in the dinghy. You discovered the mystery of clamming. You go for a while doing nothing and then jackpot. I really enjoy your videos. Been watching since the Southern Ocean series years back.

Nice to se you guys in my cruising grounds! Sorry I missed you on BI. FYI for anyone reading, it’s customary to tip the pump out boat ~$5 each time, even though the service is free. (It’s a hazardous job and they aren’t paid that great, so the appeal of the job is in the tips. ). Also, I hope you had air tower permission to fly your drone there - you were close to an airport.

Do you have any local lakes around you? You can start sailing by learning to sail dinghy sized sail boats. It is how I learned. They are super fun, and they may be just what you need right now, and then later you might get to the blue water, but just keep working up in size of sailboat. I am told all the time that my time on tiny sailboats will make me a better sailor, and way ahead of the rest who just went out and bought the blue water sailboat.

I used to sea kayak through the Thimbles. Very similar and rocky, but not the cobble beaches you’ll see in Maine. The water is awfully cold in Maine...you’re in for a cold winter. The Lobster is pretty different from the spiny lobsters you’re used to. You’ll love the Islands when you get north of Portland. Acadia Nat Park is awesome.

When you were between the Thimbles and Block, near the CT river, you passed about 3 miles south of me. I had planned to sail out to you and wave hello as you passed. No wind near shore kept us from doing that, we sat 1/4 mile off shore just flopping. I was thinking about calling you on the radio but noticed, as you mentioned, that there was a lot of radio traffic including Coast Guard, so I didn't want to interrupt. I'll catch up to Delos someday, somewhere, and wave to you, safely from a distance. Sail on!

I got to see the nicest and richest areas around like block island, fisher island, marthas vineyard, south hampton, montauk, cape cod, newport RI, probably some of the coolest experiences i had of my young life were thanks to that job. they also paid our traveling expenses like hotels and dining.
