Painting detail in an oil painting is a really fun part of the process. It's all about the accumulation of well placed, fine marks. Sometimes the line is blurred between not enough and too much. In this tutorial watch Andrew Tischler as he applies detail techniques to an En Plein Air painting. This scene depicts an old barn in Waitahuna, New Zealand.

Please don't lament your use of detail! That's the artist you are... and your instruction has taught me to add detail to my oversimplified paintings. I could never find that instruction in college and it's a lost art.

I truly admire your audacity to paint as the masters did. You have a keen knowledge of color, technique and the ability to convey it to others. I have been struggling with my style most of my 52 years and you may have enliven my muse. Now I only have 2-3 years to make my proverbial mark, say the doctors. This gives me even more the desire to create. Now that I don't have to work anymore, I have all that time just to create. Stumbling across your channel has been a true Godsend to me, thank you Andrew. I hope you have a fruitful long life to leave yours. Martin Carlson

Wow, Andrew! I don't know about anyone else, but as for me, I love the meticulous details. Although they can be exhausting, it makes a painting more interesting IMHO. When I visit art museums, I'm always most in awe of the brush strokes of the the detailed paintings. I find it inspirational. Yet, I understand the desire to loosen up after years of painting a certain way. Still, I very much appreciate and enjoy your methodical process AND how you show the gradual progression from the beginning to finish near the end of the video. That's so helpful to see. I think I'm going to start doing that so I can track my progress. It might even be helpful to have as a reference, if I get stuck at some point. Thanks for sharing another great video with such great content. You've given me lots to think about. As always, looking forward to the next one! Take care of yourself and family. Enjoy the snow!

As always, LOVE you painting videos, so very helpful. It was particularly fascinating to see how just laying the graduation of colors, the details pop, and make a difference. I typically use acrylics, but most of the principles carry though. Watching the details take shape with each brushstroke is like watching magic. I will never tire of this! Thank you!

You are a SURGEON with those brushes! Thank you for these videos. I adopted, “Working back to front” in my studies (amongst other techniques you’ve shared - I want to grab a hold of some oleogel next). This works best for me. I’m enjoying the learning process and have become less fearful/anxious of “putting myself out there.” Your methods and teachings make the most sense to me. And for that, I’m grateful.

Hi Andrew- I learn a lot from your demonstrations and the comments you make as the video plays.I think your methodical process makes a lot of sense: a number of thumbnails to explore the composition possibilities and select one to develop the painting; then a colour study; then a grid-based scale-up to the final painting. Many thanks! Best Wishes Kevin Barry

Hi Andrew. So glad you’re back. Your comment about “crossing the line” just validated what I experienced with my painting the other day. It just wasn’t pleasing me after working on it (too long). So I backed off, took a good look, and realized it had too many details covering the whole scene. So I scraped off most of it and “generalized” the supporting areas, leaving details mainly for the center of interest. Voila! It is so much better, and your validating my decisions was very important to me. Crossing the line is a good lesson to absorb. Thanks!

Absolutely, you must cross the line it’s the only way to learn where the line is! Without crossing it you risk playing it too safe, equally you may find that you like what you have produced beyond the line. Does that make sense?? Great to hear that you are getting more commissions. What you do is quality and that takes time. If it means that there is a wait to see your next video, then so be it. The commissions must come first. Thanks Andrew!

Watching people paint in oil is one of my favorite things! It's so relaxing and satisfying. When it comes to details it all depends on what you're going for and how you do it and that's going to be different for everyone. Like you said, unless you push the boundaries of looseness and detailedness (totally a word) you're not going to find out what you want. There's a lot of pressure out there to either make your paints really loose (or super detailed though I haven't heard that so much) but you shouldn't let that direct where you go unless that's actually what you want to do. Detailed or loose, I think this painting looks amazing.

Great video! I've learned that watching more than once helps catch key points. As a recent refugee from the world of acrylics, I appreciate your comments about drying times. Currently I'm tangling with the concept of making sure I'm always doing fat over lean, when I have to do several layers. Your thoughts on that in a video would be appreciated.
