I’m a mobile detailer in atlanta and have sone around 500 cars now. I’ve adopted this method that seems to work for me (just in case anyone is looking for alternate methods) 1. Spray Retyre on the tire 2. Immediately spray a mix of Brake Buster and an iron remover on the rim with a foaming spray head 3. Agitate the tire then agitate the rim with a boards hair brush. 4. Rinse 5. Hit the inner barrel with a wheel woolie and face with a mit or rag 6. Rinse and done. I do this because it allows the products to all dwell a bit longer without drying out and I’m never just waiting for something to happen. Hope that helps anyone out there!

I agree. I am currently doing a BMW 3 and the rims are trashed, actually the whole thing is. I used Megs wheel bright diluted 5 to 1 and it did a great job. I did have to stay on top and apply and scrub then rinse. Then i went and sprayed iron remover on all 4

@mcdoob i know this, i think we all know that. It's not really comparable, but other than iron remover, i dont really like using acid based products. I will say acid works so much better, but it's all personal preference. Acid is quicker. Takes a lot of the manual scrubbing away, but with the right amount of effort, you can get any wheel looking just as clean. Its all about effort. These products are only here for time efficiency, your normal car wash soap will do just as good but you'll put in 10x the effort. Make sense?

@_risen i use iron remover first. Let it sit on the wheels only until ive sprayed the last wheel and then going over with the brake buster and or citrus All purpose cleaner

As someone who only does this as a weekend job, I learned this far too late and too much elbow grease to clean wheels. I stopped by my local detailing shop and immediately bought acid wheel cleaner, and the wheels that typically struggle to clean...made the cleaning process a breeze. Step by step, I become more efficient and slowly make more money per hour, especially on the neglected cars that I detail.

Acid works fantastic i usedit for years (BUT) you need something like break buster after.... because Acid can cause the calipers and routers to rust out and don't let me no I've been doing this for years and on my own car that's why i figures it out that the Acid cause rust, do after i used Acid on hammered wheels i spray break buster spray let it sit a bit so it penetration over the surface then rinse. You may not know this but I've seen it because i used it on my car, so the method i use now i don't get that rust. The customers car is gone so you done know what's taking place on the calipers and routers. Not bashing you your a great guy,,,,, keep it up man

Yeah man I started using theirs and got the iron remover too. I've used brake buster and adams wheel and tire and I think adams is better than brake buster but Nano skin was 25$ for a gallon and I love it. There's hardly anyone that talks about it. I use it out of a foam cannon and it's really good, I'll add the iron remover if needed and that's also cheap,14$ for 16oz.

I second the respirator! I was using acid cleaner and spray it on a panel and mistakenly breathed in one big sniff. Oh man! The aftermath was horrendous, from painkillers to nebuliser, it was hard to recover. Even my breathing tasted like acid. I'll be cautious always!

I like to spray whatever wheel cleaner that makes sense ( after my evaluation of the general condition of the vehicle). I use different soaps, foam, wheel soaps, tire cleaners etc all based on that evaluation. They are are accessible and ready. I also like to spray wheel and tire, Wheel first, while it is dwelling, I’ll spray tire. Agitate inner barrel of wheel, then tire, then outer wheel and rim, rinse. The only exception is when I have very dirty or dusty wheel, I’ll pre rinse quickly to get surface dirt off before using chemicals. All of this is aimed at the least aggressive method that gets the job done…first time.

Working at ford we used acid on basialy every car (new and used) rims and they where all fine. ACCEPT plastec centercaps. I did once dammage the SUPER DUTY center caps on a BRAND NEW F250, barely anything but still some paint gone.

I do this same thing but pressure wash first to loosen some cake on the wheels then I apply the acid and brush, then I apply foam to neutralize and rinse. definately go full strength with whatever you're using .. if it's extremely dirty. no need to waste time. just go quicker and don't let it dry before neutralizing rinsing. wheels are easy with acid or full strength degreaser I always find that pressure washing wheels first makes a huge difference in effort it takes chemicals to clean wheel and brushes need less pressure. plus you break through some grime with the pressure helps a lot do whatever way you want just be safe don't take forever and go over them five times 😆

im a detailer and theres an amazing Alkaline based cleaner called grime off its amazing, it turns dirt into a skin and you just hit it off with a gerni, great for wheels and underbodies. i use that then agitate let it sit some more than rinse off.

I think you're onto something here, Oscar. I think I'll include this on neglected wheels like you suggest. I believe I'll do a quick agitation rinse then using the wheel brightener and let it set as I'm cleaning the tire and then give a thorough rinse of the tire and wheel. Thanks for this suggestion.

Two important things about acids to remember, there are different types of acids used in wheel cleaners and you want one that has the buffering agents in it to prevent the acids (hydrofluoric, sulfuric, oxalic or whichever) from pitting, etching or bleaching any unpainted metals or turn alloy bars white. And only use an acidic wheel cleaner on wheels that truly need it. Detailing is vehicle surface care and more, so use only what the surfaces need not smashing every wheel with acid just because its faster or using compound on every paint that needs correction, sometimes acids and compounds arent needed. I rinseless wash my first cars wheels cause they have brakes that dont leave brake dust much at all. Save your iron fallout remover for once the wheel is clean, they are an acid too (thioglycolic acid) - sodium, anmonium or potassium ones exist but a truly good wheel acid takes the worst wheels and makes them look polished. Check any acid cleaners safety data sheets for Ph adjuster or buffering agent listed in the compositiom of hazardous ingredients section of the sheet. Some acidic cleaners dont have them and they pit, etch and turn white, any metal thats unpainted or uncoated.

at a carwash, would acid be used usually on every car so they can churn thru cars? if so and it's aggressive, does that mean every time you get your car washed, theyre slowly damaging your finish? i can't imagine a car wash having acid and a iron remover and selectively using on each car. i'm guessing they'd just have one product as a volume business?

Your best bet would be a rinseless wash. Get yourself a nice sprayer, load it with something like ONR, and you're good. I'd grab some DI or distilled water just to reup the sprayer.

That's my go to wheel cleaner. I only use it on factory wheels. All those aftermarket like Fuel wheels are a no. I rinse spray wire cleaner 4:1 and pressure wash. Let the pressure do the job.

Please try dark fury We spray wheels, rinse off and walk away 80% of the time it’s good enough to pass 👍🏻 the other 20% are either gloss black, or matte wheels. But it’s great for aluminum to kill your time in half!

Bro when I found Tuff Stuff by Technicians Choice, I realized all other wheel cleaners are pointless and RU-vidrs are mostly focused on selling you a different brand every month. Wheels and tires stop you from going right to the real washing! Gotta make the process as fast as possible and acid based cleaners allow for a one swipe with the brush & rinse technique. Couldn’t be any faster! On my maintenance clients, I spray and let it dwell during the initial foam bath and boom: flawlessly clean wheels no time spent on brushing wheels.

When using wheel acid You wanna be careful in direct sunshine. Make sure you spray the wheel first to cool it down, might want to a test area first, use gloves and mask as well as you don’t want to breathe it in. Pay attention to which way the wind blows so you not spraying and the acid comes back in you. Don’t let it sit more than around 30 seconds , if it hasn’t come of then rinse and do another round.Neutralize the acid with another cleaner after the acid. Wear gloves and a mask 😷. Acid definitely works wonders with baked on brake dust and will save you a ton of time and get the wheel shining, just have to be a little careful

I see a tonne of alloys and tyres damagef by wheel acid. It takes off the laminate off diamond cut alloys, paint off coated alloys,damages brake drums, makes tyres crack soon. If it touches your skin it will burn and it iritates lungs 😢

I agree and I don't. If it's the sort of wheel you are doing I go your way. But any other higher quality rim, polished rim or crome rim I do use a safer high quality non acid one. And for ceramic coated it's usually just brake buster 50:50. Also I disagree with the brush and it being for instagram. You know yourself you need a microfiber wheel brush or ez detail brush for the inside, something for behind the face (if you include) a brush for the nuts, a brush for the tire etc

You actually dont need any tool for the inside when using the proper products and ways to do it. The less you touch anything, the less you'll damage the paint, same goes for the wheels. If people love to do that, fine, but for a professional, who's time is valuable..most of it is a waste.

Wheels are so simple though. I use nano skin non acid. It foams like crazy so i use it out of a foam cannon. Now if the wheel is really bad then i add a couple oz of nano skin iron free to help the wheel and tire cleaner in my foam cannon. Spray the wheel and tire off first. Then foam both on one side i let it sit for exactly 2 minutes then foam it a little more and scrub the tire first the hit the barrel then the face and lug nuts, then the wheel well. Rinse and done.

I don't bother with iron remover on wheels . Waste of time to me . If wheels not to bad I use advanced brake dust remover, non acid . If pretty bad I use advanced wire wheel or sterling wheel brightener . Cutting the acid at 20 to 1 makes a good iron remover on paint as well .

Acid on your wheels 🤦‍♂️. That is not a dirty wheel. Usual wheel cleaner (non acid) and a wheel brush along with a bucket of soapy water and a decent brush. 4 mins max each wheel. Better for the environment and less cost. You would not see this way if cleaning a wheel in the U.K. a lot of fuss over nothing!!!

Why is every vid you saying every Detailer is wrong. Are you the only Detailer doing it correctly? Doubt it seriously

To be fair, I didn't say "every" detailer. I said "detailers". It's just my opinion.. but also; I wish I could title the video "this is how I clean wheels" but it's going to get 500 views.. there's always an angle
