Detailing & painting a fleet of mk2 coaches - My biggest project so far

I've been working on this project since early February. In January I bought some new NSE mk2s to expand my existing trains. Doing this really showed the flaws in my existing mk2 repaints. So I took the decision to remove the paint from those and start again. I also repaint & fit figures to all my mk2 coach interiors as well as adding lights to each coach while I'm at it.

Most of this was filmed before the pandemic in the UK ramped up. I've addressed it briefly at the beginning of the video as I thought it would be remiss of me not to mention it. I am well and so is the family, I hope the same applies to you. I am currently at home following the Government advice. I am unable to work from home so am on leave without pay. I have serious concerns for the future of the small company I work for. Please be respectful in the comments. I've already had to delete some from people who claim all this is a joke. Look after yourselves and take care, thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to put this video together... very few viewers understand the amount of work it takes to film videos, edit them and put it all together.

Absolutely stunning! Your workmanship is fantastic and generally, the realism of the layout is top-notch. I like the scenic and the trackwork and realistic ballasting. The coaches are brilliant and the detailing and effort are so well done. It's a good job your layout is set back in time as the modern image layouts I've seen will probably need to put masks on every figure, only kidding! Hope you're bearing up to the extended lockdown and thanks for an entertaining hour, I really enjoyed it. Cheers Ian

How refreshing to hear your enthusiasm where passengers are concerned. I recognise the mark two coaching stock as i worked for BRITISH RAIL, Network Southeast in the 1980s andknow this stock well. It always makes me smile to see when that extra effort has been made to include passengers and train crew as although i did GHOSTING turns during terrible winter weather, trains do not run around with no drivers but we used to say we could run a perfect service if it wasn't for those damn passengers. I worked on EPB s for years and found them to be a lot more reliable than the wretched NETWORKERS that replaced them. However, i also worked with drivers who previously worked and complained about the previous diesel services and before that even steam. It put us all on an even keel. The main problem was they had the aerodynamics of a shed and when in collision, tended to pile up, whereas networkers have anti-ride plates but i hit a cow once at 70 mph and that took the anti-ride plate off. Later on BR didn't always repaint they stuck on plastic stickers also used when rebranding networkers because when the mix was too strong in our washing machine, it peeled them off.

Hi Richard. Patience, accurate work and an eye for the real thing can only make you a superb modeller....Everard Junction proves that. Now that we are lockled down and I am having great difficulty walking, a comfortable chair plus all the paints, transfers and sundries has left me thinking about a weathering project also....850 plus N gauge wagons for weathering and transfers for my layout. You just gave me the boost I need. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Bob

Evening Richard. First of all glad too here you and your family are all well 👍🏻 Nothing better in this unprecedented time than a Everard Junction video on your fantastic layout 😃 The coaches look great. I've been laid off on furlough from work 😩 As I mention in my comment to Charlie Bishop at Chadwick model railway I've not looked at my layout for over three years but you and others have given me some impetus to start tidying up my garage and if I've the courage to post a video 🙈 Take care Richard and hopefully we'll see a new video very soon. Richard, excellent video. The detailing of the interiors of the Mk2As were certainly worth it. You seem to reach a certain standard - become unhappy with it and then push yourself harder to improve - and you do this very well. What worries me is when you get tired of this exceptional standard - and push yourself further - where do you go? Max Pax coffee cups with smoke units fitted to simulate steam coming off the drink!!!! I can certainly vouch for the accuracy of the atmosphere you have generated in the Class 50 (& Mk2A) hauled trains. I remember travelling on one such train working out from Waterloo to Exeter in December 1988. My 50 was very spluttery and smokey. A time when having the vestibule door window down was not a capital offence and enjoying the coach reeking of partially burnt diesel fumes following a tunnel. I thank you for making a Scottish modeller very happy tonight and giving me a greater kick in the rear to upgrade those WHL Mk1/2a sets I have. Good luck and stay well - look forward to the next installment - no matter how long it takes, it is worth waiting for. I hope your company survives these hard times and that you are able to continue both of your interests - railways and cars.

What another great film. You inspired me a great deal. I have taken apart one of my old Hornby mk2 coach and painted the seats in a light blue. I will be adding people and also lighting, which same circuit as the one you made. But I have a little less space for the printed circuit board. I have yet to finish repainting the out side of the coach. Through out lockdown this hobby kept me going, but I have a little less time now being back at work. I hope your work will be ok. Some people are so ready to think it is all a joke, if they were on the wrong side of being unwell they would thing again. Look after yourself and take care. Can not wait for another one of your films. :)

The painted seats and tables really do make a massive difference, well worth the effort. Good decision on the line transfers, although fiddly, the do look spot on. Great editing with the B roll scenes, definitely captured that 80s feeling along with the music. Stay safe and I'll look forward to the next instalment.

Just excellent work. The hours you put into the project show in the way that they just look right. I am sure you understand what I mean. For those who do not understand, I mean watching the trains go past, just look like a model railway, to the point of realism , you don't notice anything because it looks right. Detail takes time and the best detail is not noticed. Thank you Richard.

Brilliant work on the coaches Richard, using transfers can be rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Having relined a standard class four tank in N gauge I know how hard it can be. On one small detail, it would be great if there was some way of fitting a flashing red light to the rear coach. If not it doesn't distract from the great work you've done on the vehicles. Looking forward to the next video and stay safe in the current climate.

Well done for keeping yourself entertained while some others are finding it very hard. It is good that you have a hobby you can get lost in, to take your mind off outside influences. This is a very interesting video, it was good to see that if you are not happy with the way things are, it can always be changed. The only problem is that GOOGLE is attempting to spoil all your efforts by sticking adverts, and far too many of them, destroying the viewer's train of thought. Keep the excellent work up, you are fantastic at what you do.

What a skilled modeler you are, Mr. Everard!!! I'm actually a wargamer/modeller myself, however I am learning so much from your videos that are relevant to my own small-scale military modelling. (Plus I like to watch the little trains run!) What I do find, and I mean the opposite of any criticism or offence, is that while many railway modelers achieve stunning and realistic finishes regarding re-painting and weathering of rolling stock and locos, (you are a master at this...) the trackside and passenger/crew figures tend to suffer in comparison. (To be clear, painting trackside/passenger/crew figures is not the same as painting super-detailed wargaming miniatures. I do understand that!) However, in return for the many and varied modeling tips I've garnered from your posts, I'd like to offer you a tip of my own if I might... There is a product called ARMY PAINTER QUICKSHADE DIP which is used by many wargaming mini-painters to 'quickshade' miniatures which have been painted most basically. (It's frowned on by some very high-end painters as unsubtle and a bit like cheating, however, I think it would be ideal for model railway layout little people!) To the uninitiated, it's basically a 'furniture stain' type varnish that when brush-painted on to the basic-painted mini, seeps into the details on the molding/casting and shades areas like eye sockets and facial details, gaps in clothing, belts etc... I've used it and I find it really good. Since it dries to a high protective gloss, it does need to be matt-varnished after drying. (There are numerous videos on RU-vid explaining and illustrating how the product works.) Please continue to share your educational and entertaining videos with us. Thank you for your wonderful channel. xx SF

The end results are worth the time and effort you have put into this project. I have only refurbished my collect of Teaks. Painted people and made the appearance better than when I got them. They are from different years so they don't match up so well, but they are what I have. I do have some Blood and Custard coaches to do and I want to put some people in the two diesel railcars that I have. One is from 1962/3 and the later from one from about the 80s. I have nearly finished most of the buildings for the layout. Apart from the roundhouse which a very good friend of mine is 3D printing for me. There are some pictures on my Facebook page "Yorkdale LNER Preservation Railway" Thank for sharing this video, I did find very interesting. Take care and stay safe and the same to all of your family. Martin. (Back in Thailand and unemployed.)

Great vid as usual, interesting re 50046, she was in reasonable nick in 89' but went down hill in 90/91, I took a video of her on 1st May 1990 unusually working an evening Bristol TM to Wolverhampton service with 5 intercity mk2e's!

Fantastic effort Richard, you say you were entering a state of Madness, I think you you gone One Step Beyond ! mixing the two sizes of figures gives the overweight persons a feel their apart of the railway lol. no brick cell phones for the 1980's. Can remember traveling Jaffa Cake livery EMU's on the GER around that time as well!

Superb Richard, what a payoff for the effort. Those techniques producing a level of detail that matches, if not surpasses some of the best manufacturers. Seeing your skill set at its current level and only getting better, when EJ is finally complete (although that's probably a fair way off yet) I dare say it's going to be one of the best layouts in the country.

Well done Richard, you've even evidenced to Mr Johnson that your a good honest citizen and stayed in to save lives. Your attention to detail is amazing. I like to think I'm very similar however I get to a certain level and think I just cannot be bothered hence the difference in our results. Well done
