Hey Everyone - in this tutorial Jules shares her methods of madness detailing rocks in oils. She has several different methods of painting rocks - this is one of them. 'Alive' is a part of her Coastal range recently released and are now exhibiting in her Tasmanian gallery - minus this one which was the first to sell.
It's Rocky Cape - NW Tasmania where the rocks are incredibly textured, coloured and a major feature of coastline. It's important creating realism from the get go when representing such dynamic nature.
Colours: Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Alizarine, Ultra Marine Blue, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Oxide, Cadmium Lemon Yellow & Titanium White.
As much as it would be nice to say there's a quick way for painting realistic rocks and cliffs - there's not - but don't dismay. There are techniques to apply and armed with knowledge of subject matter, tonal values, light transfer and knowing your paints the process is easy - just requires lotsa love and patience.
Rome wasn't built in a day and nor are quality paintings. Rocks consist of faces, vertices, and edges and at this location are rough and textured. To accomplish maximum dimension it's vital to emulate through appropriate tonal variation the direct sun reflection on vertices, core shadow, reflected/refracted light at rock bases, reflected cast shadow and the cast shadow itself.
This can be tricky when unsure where to start and if you don't understand light transfer - hopefully this tutorial helps with some of that.
Dry rocks are the same as wet rocks - with a few exceptions of tonal adaptations. Listen out and you pick up at one of them.
