A beautiful song. Detectorists proves that good story telling does not need violence, gratuitous sexual enconters, gunfights or rotting cadavers to be enlightening about the human condition.
Absolutely agree but think they wish to keep us scared as it makes us more right wing in our politics apparently. We become less trusting of others etc and behold we do which creates divisions and they've won.
Hello, my name is Martin Schmitz from Germany, and I have never seen such a beautiful, fantastic series as "Detectorists" in my life, these films are so humorous and full of love that one would like to watch all episodes together, it is already like an addiction, but a nice pleasant addiction! I've seen a lot of films in my 54 years, but I've never been more delighted by films like the series "Detectorists", the actors and the script are unique, just close to the life of the simple, that's what makes this series so likeable. "Detectorists" deserves a sequel with new episodes, many people would certainly be grateful for it and these many people are waiting with great longing for a continuation of this unique wonderful series that touches the hearts of so many people! I'm so glad you enjoy it Martin. I couldn't agree more. It seems to me to be archetypically English in its themes (hobbies etc., which I love) but it's great that it reaches across the sea to you. Perhaps its more universal than I realised.

Hello Martin. Are you aware that there are 3 series and a Christmas special that was aired this past Christmas? I would agree with your comments whole heartedly. This type of TV are known to us as "feel good TV" Did you watch them in English or Deutsch ?
My husband has been gone for nearly 3 years, when we were watching this series. He loved MDing...and bought one special for me. He never got well enough for us to go out and treasure hunt. Alas he only got to series 2. I finished it for the both of us. And I'm re-watching it now... thinking of him and feel this song is his anthem. He's waiting for me, I just know it.
I had stage 3 cancer when I found this show and when it found me. This song. Will be played as I’m lowered into the ground. It says what I can not. Yes, I’m praying it will be years away but on that day I will listen one last time. Beautiful. 🙏🏻❤️
Feckin birds, tis best they never found what they were lookin for. Be carefull what ya wish for..etc. unfortunately it takes a stern look a ones own mortality to see the wood from the trees. Hope ya doin well
Detectorists is honestly one of the best shows that I came across completely by chance. Such a sweet, quaint, funny and emotional series, and definitely one of those shows I wish I could wipe from my memory only to watch again afresh. This song brings back those moments cuddled up with my fiancee in front of the TV enjoying this burried treasure of a television show.
My wife and I love the series so much, we went on our own hunt to visit all the filming locations. We had a lovely weekend climbing through the briar and brambles. We ended up sitting in the scout hall having filled ourselves up with coffee at the Lemon Tree, a few yards down the road. What a fulfilling experience this delightful show has been for so many people.
I have watched it once, all the way through. I yearn to watch it again, soon. Tonight, while reading the lyrics to the song as I listened, I finally understand them. It is from the point of view of the gold they are searching for. Knowing that, makes it all make sense! I love the story, every episode. Mackenzie Crook, I have the highest regard for you, thank you for giving this to us!
I've never seen a comments section like this in all the years I've been on RU-vid. So full of emotion and love for both the show and the song. I've read every comment and it's genuinely warmed my soul. Life is hard a lot of the time, and weird and perplexing. However there are still plenty of like minded folk in this world who want to look after each other and share the love and it really gives me a sense of peace and appreciation. Genuine treasure ❤

And it's nice that the BBC understand that 2 men sat under a tree talking ......... of Cabbages & Kings and other stuff .suits people like me. It's a bonus with this song........ The banter between Simon & Garfunkel was icing on the cake........ More please.
This show includes the greatest slow speed car/scooter chase in human history. Plus they blew up Terry in season 1. I want to smoke what you're smok8ng man!
Like a fool I thought I was only one of a handful who rated this show and this song so highly. It was perfect, every second of every episode was perfect.
i adore this show. i really appreciate the gentle friendship between Lance and Andy, and how they show a positive male relationship -- one of honesty and also humor. I love that they tell each other everything, and also call each other out when they are bullshitting. Anyway, this song is haunting and beautiful, and just perfect.
This song reminds me of dog walks with my old dog Jed. He died aged 16 a couple of years ago and I won't lie... I just made myself cry listening to this again.
Going through that feeling myself presently and just stumbled on the show and my poor dog passed and I just feel it’s his anthem to us… he’s waiting for us… thank you for sharing beautiful song… ❤🐾

I stumbled onto this treasure of a show 2 weeks ago...I am savoring the last season....I am an American, but I can truly appreciate the simplistic beauty of this show. I can't imagine anyone else in any of the characters....and the theme song...superb

It's not often a piece of music fits so perfectly with a superb piece of writing, combined with an awesome cast, brilliant crew, and even quite a good director. Cheers Johnny, a wonderful song in these dark, shitty times.
I cannot listen to the line ‘ and I knew the call of all the songbirds ; they sang all the wrong words’ without almost blubbering like a baby. This is an amazing series and song , the only criticism I have of both of these is that they finished.
The most beautiful theme song to one of the most beautiful programmes ever made. And still no 4K Blu Ray. “Not enough demand” Oh there will be, eventually this will be seen as the best sitcoms of the decades
@@peterrandall9523 It's quite enough for a comedy series to be very funny - few of them, even the greats, manage to be Beautiful as well. It's a genuinely special show.
Found this show completely by accident and immediatly fell in love with it. So simple and yet so elegant. The characters are people we all know or want to know. Probably one of the best shows ever.
My discovery of a medieval hunting arrowhead last week in our allotment reminded me of this. Up to then all we have found is nails, screws, window catches and the occasional BOAT.
Cool. This show made me become a metal detectorist. All I've found is mostly some nails and a piece of twisted iron. Just bits and bobs. Hot rocks and grots.
@@Pur9leRain Exactly that. I've also found what I suppose should be a BOAL (Bit of a Lawnmower). A carburettor body, in fact, from a Tecumseh motor of the 50s.
My favourite scene of the whole series....brings a tear to my eye every time........and makes me pump my fist in the air at the same time......this show is so pure and honest. Probably the best thing ever
Been living in New Zealand for 14 years and only just stumbled across this series. The song has gripped me to my soul and with the subtle humour and simple ways that I miss so much coming through to ease my aching bones I am now making plans to return to England.
I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been in NZ 11 years now. There’s so much to miss about the UK. It’s programmes like this that remind me just what I left behind and never appreciated when I was in my home country....
I will hear NOTHING negative about this…or anything to do with the series ! My absolute favourite; there’s so much to learn from Mackenzie’s beautiful writing. I can watch it over & over. Fab…esp if you feel a bit down…

Once it leaves your heart and hand , it's journey now belongs to the whims of providence , and it's message is to it's keeper . True artists understand this. Found this series a month ago..my husband and I were hooked from the start. Shared it with my brother..he's hooked now as well👍. As for the theme song...we lost our mom to cancer Jan. 2 2021, and this song gets me teary eyed every time. Amazing series, amazing song. Really hope for more in this series❤
It's a show that gives you pause and think this show wouldn't last 2 weeks here in the USA and that's a shame.there is such kindness in this show and the different characters are not gold they are diamonds.

King Alfreds jewel which Lance discovered was actually found near my parents village called north Newton in Somerset. It’s is in the ashmolean museum Oxford. This is a beautiful song and program
I was skeptical when a good friend recommended Detectorists, but... It charmed me like I never could have expected. This song is so perfect for the series--I cannot get enough! After a long day filled with numerous unwanted ear worms, I play this song and watch an episode and I fall straight to sleep--at peace, and with a smile on my face. Thank you for posting!
Lovely, brilliant, funny, restorative. People are tragic, funny, idiosyncratic. But most of all, let's just be nice and friendly. This is what this program has taught me.
Just watched this beautiful series for the first time by accident over Christmas and new year. Very heart warming. There were a few times when it broke me emotionally. When lance discovered the valuable treasure. The song also is very beautiful. Scenery amazing. Thanks so much for lifting my spirits
Hearing this makes me want to pack up and move to England. Well, for various other reasons I'd like to, but this song . . . me sitting at the computer listening to this and crying. And it's been so long since I've been to England and I don't know when I'll get to visit again. It's like the inhabitants are the treasure of the treasure.
@pisswobble From the States and on various trips we visited London, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Rye, Windsor, Oxford, Leeds, Cheltenham, Stratford-on-Avon, Huddersfield, Haworth, Holmfirth, York, Chester, Broadway, and Stow-on-the-Wold though a few of those were overnight stays or day trips or, in the case of Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold, a staying-in-Cheltnam-and-get-a-bus-and-go-to-different-towns afternoon. We also visited Scotland (Edinburgh) and Wales (Holyhead and Cardiff), and the Republic of Ireland. My favorite places are London and Haworth. I majored in lit, so . . . but the Holmfirth and Rye visits were because we'd seen those places on tv or video (We recognized an actor on the Mapp & Lucia vhs case at the library, checked out the video...and later read the books).
@pisswobble Sounds like Disney World was not so memorable in a good way. I was in jr high (decades ago, lol) and what I mainly remember is the teacups ride, the Hall of Presidents, and the Electric Light Parade.
As a Yank and Irishman now living in Scotland there is a magic to this program and the song attached I'm not sure if it speaks to me as simpler days or simpler life. Or an English humour that is seldom appreciated by Americans. There is a subtlety in the humour and the language that is seldom found today, well done to the Producers actors and musicians who put this gem together, being a musician this song is going straight into my repertoire
Fallen in love with this programme..such a gentle watch. Buetiful scenery and perfectly miss (matched) characters...this theme tune immediately captivated me..thumbs up to makenzie for this writting and directing .
The third verse was added in the third seasons for the magpies. It surely does deserve it, but it wasn't "canceled". Mackenzie ended it the way he wanted it to end. I'd be surprised if we didn't see a reunion of sorts though in the future. I surely hope so. This show has been massively impactful to my life. It sounds stupid I know, but it's helped me through a very rough time and brought a heart and soul that no other show has. I'm not a celebrity type of person, but I sure as hell hope I can meet Mackenzie so I can tell him how much he and this show means to me and how the DMC literally may have saved my life.

I binge-watched it about a dozen times and loved nearly every scene. I give it 10 out of 10. It carried me away from all my daily concerns, so entertaining and relaxing an escape.
I loved this show - in looking for the gold under our feet, we are immersed in the true gold of our relationships. I loved the theme song just as much.

I so love this song and I so love this show! How is it that a show described as a comedy brings me both to raucous laughter and to deep heartfelt tears? Detetcorists is simply my most favourite show ever! I have watched it through three times now, and each time, I am astounded by the the writing, the story, - the deep metaphors about life, loving and friendships - the brilliant acting, etc., etc. Thank you Mackenzie, Johnny, and all. This. Song. Plays over and over in my head, heart and soul. Love it so much. It is the absolute icing on the delectable cake that is the comedy series of the Detectorists. Such a gem. All of it. I understand that Mackenzie Crook spent a long time listening to Johnny Flynn's music as he wrote the Detectorist series and asked him (you?) to write a song for it. Thank you for writing this song. I keep going back and forth between this and "Magpie" by the Unthanks. Have had the most delicious ear worms all week, and I just don't seem to tire of either song.
Thank you highhoe Kermit for putting this together. Having all three verses together made this song absolutely perfect. My wife and I actually used this song for our first dance at our wedding this past weekend 9/01/18. Wasn't a dry eye anywhere. Even the DJ shed a tear. Beautiful song and everyone loved it!!
