As soon as the music starts, it's like my whole body goes "aaaaahhhhh" in a big sigh as I settle down to a world of simple, smooth viewing. It's the best show and i love everything about it. Please never stop!
It's a feast of brilliant. Everything -- writing, directing, cast, performances, cinematography, locations -- everything is sharp as a razor. I loved being taken up into that world with each episode. And such genius humour. It's like a symphony.
I love Rachel Stirling’s voice. It is so like her late, beautiful mother, Diana Rigg’s voice. A fabulous programme. Long may it last. Have loved reading all of the comments on here. ❤
Put simply, Detectorists is absolutely wonderful on all levels: the writing, the directing, the acting, the characters (there are no bad characters, even the bad guys are good guys) the whole thing has a laid back vibe to it; during lockdown (and I know this sounds a little sad) I watched all three series around half a dozen times and was elated to discover a Christmas 2022 special was on the cards. I'd love a fourth series, I really would, because there's something spiritual, something calming, it's a joy to watch and it really makes me feel good.
During lockdown wandering around an empty field on your own with a metal detector was against the rules, think about how stupid that was, we must never forget what they did to the world population. There never was an "emergency", yet many people are still believers, but there IS an ongoing campaign to remove freedoms and control every aspect of our lives. " Get the coil to the soil" while you still can.......
I agree. When I first laid eyes upon the 2 antagonists, I immediately thought...Simon and Garfunkel and when they ever played a few bars of their music, I cracked up! The writing is so clever. I'm trying to find the 75 minute "final" episode after it was decided not to have a 4th season. Would you know where I can find it?
I think there is plenty of scope for a 4th 5th and 6th series. It would be cool to see more of the other characters too. The one character i felt a bit sorry for was Sophie.Certainly didn't deserve that pint over her head :)
The most beautiful programme on TV. Wonderful arc of story, driven along by a brilliant script. Superbly cast. Inspired acting. Apparently effortless direction. A hymn to humanity and nature. The Christmas special was no exception. (Art Garfunkel lookalike: "Sheila, you're breaking my heart." Andy: "You're shaking my confidence daily." Priceless.)
The relentless Simon and Garfunkel gags -- verbal, visual, musical -- are just fabulous. Having grown up in the 70s, and a big S&G fan besides, they have me wiping my eyes with laughter ever time.
The perfect show for our troubled times. An escapist antidote to the silliness of our politics and economic situation. Everything about it is good - scripts, cast, location, pace, music and not forgetting the beautiful B roll of wildlife. A celebration of quirky Britishness. I'd love a Detectorists film but I fear it would be taken over by awful American filmmakers and therefore lose its gentle qualities.
I want to take the hobby up after watching all 3 series 3 times. I've spent my entire life walking around looking at the ground finding things so why not get into this?!! Any help would be very appreciated 💯
I only became aware of Detectorists three days ago when it popped up on my FaceBook feed. I have now watched all three series and the post-series 2 Christmas special. They are all wonderfully written, delightfully acted and beautifully filmed.
@@scotlandsbest3981 I did and you are right. Not just small jokes, but little details here and there that were missed on first viewing. The 'Christmas' Special was a pure delight. I guess I'm just going to have to watch that one all over agin too. 😁
I'm from Maidenhead, UK but have been living in Boise, ID in the USA for almost a decade now. Every time I feel homesick, I put on an episode of Detectorists and it transports me right back. Such a warm, well written and shot programme.
For those that haven't given this series a look yet, do so, it is wonderful. The directing and casting excellent. The story lines are beautifully written poignant and funny. We all have our individual reason why a given thing appeals to us, for me what shines through is Mackenzie's humility, both his real life character, the character he plays and those he has cast. The above footage reinforces that, but it was evident from the first minutes of episode one. This like a classic novel will be returned to often.. Thank you.
I was lucky enough to spend a day with the crew and cast filming on the Christmas special. Mackenzie was nothing like I expected, a real down to earth chap and I spent 20 minutes chatting to him about the process of writing it and producing it. I told him how my other half was sceptical about it but after one episode was totally hooked because of his amazing writing. He was truly appreciative of the reception the programs have been given. At the end of the day I was even officially given a couple of props from the filming!
Love, love, love this series! My teenage son loved it too, and we both roared with laughter when we saw Lance sitting bored behind his collection of ‘ring-pulls through the ages’ at the village show. I said ‘I have BEEN to shows like that!’ He said ‘so have I! Most of them organised by YOU!’
The one I watched where the falconer's whistle is found, and the years of the changing landscape roll back to when the coins were buried, with the Unthanks Magpie song playing absolutely gave me chills and I knew this would be a very special series.
The most watchable show with loveable characters on TV one could wish for. Thumbs up all round for the way they portray our hobby coupled with great script writing, acting and amazing outdoor scenery. Just sheer brilliance! Well done Mackenzie,Toby and all concerned..you deserve all the awards and more👏
My father used to live at the end of this field and my wife and I have walked up the track to see the Saxon church. Interesting, as I have been an archaeologist since 1985. I have absolutely loved this program!
Detectorist has been one of the most refreshing, amusing, honest, clean programmes. I have loved watching the series and have watched it twice. I love the characters and the brilliant script.
I have been detecting on and off for 30 years plus. This little series of adventures are so closer to the truth than non detectorists probably realise. Just wish i could find something worth mentioning....Wonderful stuff ;0)
I discovered this series by accident. It completely flew under the radar in the beginning, but I absolutely love it. From all of the characters to the theme tune. It is pure brilliance. Mackenzie and the team should do their dance because this is 24-carat gold.
Understated comedy perfection. The Exec Producer summed up Detectorists perfectly - the characters aren't yobs, aristocrats, careerists, geniuses, or stupid - just decent people. I'd guess most viewers have most, if not all, of these characteristics. I think that's why it's so popular.
It's brilliant to see the "partner" acts in the cast interact with each other as themselves. The chemistry there is amazing. Your basic team of geniuses.
A beautifully writen and acted series showing how a simple life can be so gratifying and take you places you never dreamed of. Life really doesnt have to be 100 miles an hour to be rewarding. Frienships people, a happy life is all about friendships.
Louise you summed it up , it is the simplicity of the characters lives doing not very much in their lives that really works. The show requires no nastiness no sex no violence but I find it a real treat. The characters are all believable and the lead two are absolutely perfect for their roles. Roger
Love this show, the characters, the actors involved in making it beautiful and the theme song is so perfect and beautiful. I have watched the series with my wife 3 separate times in its entirety. I have heard a movie or long show is in the works and I am so hoping it’s true. This is easily one of our favorite shows and every year or so watch it again for all its beauty and comedy.
I love Worzel too, and feel it's very much 'of a piece' with Detectorists. The lingering shots of wildlife, the perfect evocation of a lazy English summer, and, as you say, the feeling that behind the sunshine and laughter, there's something of medieval England and 'the old magic' hanging around to give it a slightly sinister edge. Did you clock the shot of Lance's car in Worzel?
Well done, Written like only the UK knows how, just filled with subtle, unspoken meaning, full of humor, sadness, and situations that we can all relate to, about metal detecting, but yet again, actually, nothing to do with it, Brilliant!!!
I feel I’m late to the party but I have watched all the series almost back to back it’s beautifully written I have howled with laughter …the open Mike night ,the car scene over taking the scooter and the Hill street blues comment ! What a quietly amazing show …see you on Tuesday night in the scout hall 😊
Just finished watching all 3 series for the 3rd time last night & might even go for another watch of the entire series for the 4th time!!😊😂 Beats watching all the misery of life on other programs..such a calming great show.❤
Although I have heard of The Detectorists, living in Canada, I have never come across it to watch. I was offered trailers and watched about 8. I am now playing catch up. Great series and such subtle humour and still kind to older detectorists like me. I have a great idea for a cameo, one-off part for me.
I find it impossible to state why in a way that a critic would, but I just want to register that I loved these series and am a huge fan of Mackenzie in the roles he has played and the genius of his writing. Also as I was born in Essex and lived in Suffolk it's a big nostalgia trip for me. A new series please.
Most of us lead unremarkable lives, Mankenzie celebrates the sweetness of some unremarkable lives in this wonderful series that can only be described as a work of love.
"I'll be your treasure". This show is a treasure I've just discovered from across the pond in the US. Love it so much and don't understand why only three seasons. I could watch it forever.
I watched this year's Christmas special and was hooked. I am almost caught up now. A wonderful gentle comedy-drama shot in wonderful locations. It makes you appreciate living in the UK
I just love that programme... It is the best thing on television... Without doing an extensive review, it can be summarised with just one word, and that is 'Class'...
On tonight BBC2 at 10.00pm. Watched them all. I will watch it in my warm bed, which for me is a just a relaxing way of enjoying the quality of it with the Suffolk countryside to boot. Quality writing and acting. Superb.
I’m not sure that it’s underrated it’s just that, exactly like buried treasure, not enough people have come across it yet. It has won several batters and everybody who and lows it rate it highly it just needs more people to find it…
I feel this gem of a series has recently received a huge, new following from people who have only just introduced themselves to it - myself being one of them. After becoming instantly hooked, minutes into the first episode, I couldn't believe I'd gone eight years not being aware of how good this programme is.
Detectorists is a fantastically whimsical place to escape to - I love it and its the best comedy on TV - even the theme from Johnny is calming and guides you in to events in a warm meadow in England - love it.
Brilliant series, beautifully scripted and acted. Gerard Horan is perfect as Terry - admired his work since first seeing him in The Singing Detetctive all those years ago. All the cast are great in their roles.
Wonderful really enjoyed all the series and was so pleased to see we had a Christmas Special. Have watched them all again and never get fed up with it.
Great video. I have worked on the opposite kind of shows to this. I was an archaeologist on various digs that were featured in documentaries. There was always a bit about the detectorists on site.
Visited all the locations as it’s only 10 miles from us Love to have met the cast there all brilliant. Who comes up with a saying - run it up the flag pole see who salutes it hahah
I discovered Detectorists just after s1 began, have liked Toby Jones' work. After 1ep I was absolutely hooked. Its best thing that's been on tv (as has also been Mac's revival of Worzel Gummidge ' - much better than the Pertwee era version). Have been trying to get friends and family to watch it. Have had mixed reviews but it's such a beautiful show. And as someone who has a BA + MA in History and been out detectoring many years ago when growing up living on the Isle of Wight and during my time at Durham Uni, I can relate to it. Mac is a genius and the casting is superb
Lines such as Sheila's in the pub garden can really grab your heart, and pull. And in another scene, there is softly, lyrically comical genius like "I'm thirty five." "Years of age!?" in the same show. It's astonishing.
Great show. Binged watched the entire series in three days. Love it. My one gripe with the show, and it's a BIG ONE, is that it's only three seasons. 😥
I binged this on Netflix in 2023. Its such a wonderful, soulful feel good show. As soon as the theme song comes on it sends goosebumps . It just feels so comfy cosy to watch. It is actually healing. It keeps you in the moment. Its beautiful. I miss it ❤️
I know people who don't get the humour! Strange! Love the feeling that ancient history is just peeping around the corner. And the last 15 mins or so!! Genius!
I like the subtle humour which is not telegraphed so you need to catch it while it's there. The fist bump between Andie and Lance at some comment to Simon and Garfunkle which may not be appreciated as a joke. Brilliant.
I saw this show the first year it was out and I loved it! I didn't want it to end, but I also absolutely loved the ending. I had only ever seen Mackenzie Crook in Pirates of the Caribbean, and I'm not sure I had ever seen Toby Smith. They weer both perfect for their parts and then to find out the Mackenzie Crook wrote the story !! What a bonus. I think I watched it on Acorn in the US and I no longer have than channel.... I'll search Britbox, Netflix, Prime and see if I can find it anywhere. I'd love to watch it again.
This series is on par with gone fishing by mortimer and whitehouse. And I think what it really hammers home is the beauty that we seem to have lost in the simplicity of genteel and wholesome hobbies like metal detecting, fishing etc
