“I want to do your film” ‪@ARRahman‬ told ace director Shekhar Kapur. This was immediately after the release of Bandit Queen in 1994.
Gradually Shekhar Kapur became Rahman’s mentor on the Western Music Scene.
Initially Rahman was unwilling to go to the West. But Shekhar Kapur was certain that if there was a music composer from India that the West was going to accept it was AR Rahman.
Rahman global journey began with ‘Bombay Dreams’ and took him to the Academy Awards and he became the first Indian to win two Oscars.
Shekhar Kapur looks back at this journey. Rahman joins him and confirms, “There was some kind of a connection between us.”

Wow! The best thing about this silver jubilee is that the interest sustains throughput and I for one would like this series to go on. Some episodes end too soon and I want hear more. Excellent! My best wishes. And this episode has another reason: both Rahman and Shekhar Kapoor are my friends

Shekhar Kapur very aptly said Rahman is a musical genius and for this statement, Rahman subtly tells Umesh nothing like that, what a well grounded person Rahman is, other music directors should learn this. With every episode respect & love to Rahman grows higher, Thanks O2 for this experience 🙏

Bombay Theme .. wow.. even today it gives goosebumps when you listen to it. My first job at an e-commerce company .. my manager was an Australian .. and we are allowed to play music off our iPods connected to speakers whilst working ..so it’s was my managers iPods playing on my first day at work .. song number 3 was Bombay Theme .. I asked him how he got to know about it and he didn’t know who the composer was but that theme was his zen .. his place of calmness during a stressful work day!! Bombay Theme really went above and beyond and probably should be included on the golden disc if we are going to send another Voyager into space!! 😊

I'm unaware it's a silver Jubilee episode while watching but still tears are coming even after the episode ended. What a phenomenal composition, the Bombay theme music 🎵 is! My 💖 is going through both melancholy and pride coz it's so international and still so Indianly Rahman, if you can say that! I'd say if anyone doesn't know the greatness of AR Rahman, this one track is enough to make them realise what an incredible genius he is. No need to tell them any story of him. Period!

Let’s say that out loud that Shekhar has great eye for talent and depth. Look at his Bandit Queen - in one stroke he launched so much talent which still fuels Indian film industry. And he worked with Nusrst sb on Bandit Queen which contains some of the powerful and haunting compositions. And then he catapulted AR to West - and then as he said, the rest is the history! Will we ever know what AR has composed for Tara Rum Pum? Excellent episode. Loved it! Wish it was slightly longer!

It will create ripples across time and space which we might don’t see and understand at this point in time. That said, lesser views doesn’t mean we should get demotivated or restrict ourselves. Shekhar Kapoor definitely had a role to play to bring AR Rahman to western world. Though he and ARR did not work on many projects ( We still want the PAANI movie to happen with ARR music 🙂 ) their friendship and respect for each other makes all these things very special ! Loved the episode !
