Yep, more spring jobs on the homestead. We get a lot done and have fun in the process :)
Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple who left the UK in 2021 to search of somewhere we could build a homestead. This led us to one of Portugal's beautiful natural parks.
Self-sufficiency is important to us, whilst we're not off grid, we're keen to rely less and less on external systems. Follow us as we take on many things for the first time - learning as we go. DIY, Gardening, Growing our own food, Homestead'ing, Studying our land, Learning about permaculture and other farming techniques. We also plan to regenerate our abandoned land and create a thriving ecosystem - which isn't an easy task given we're in Portugal's hottest region (Alentejo!)
Follow us on our journey as we face new challenges, and acquire new skills!
If you enjoy it, hit like and subscribe for future videos :)

The donning sunglasses sequence is *fire*. 🔥🤣 The stuff on the bark your trees is lichen. It's harmless, & probably an indicator of good air quality.

Pruning all those trees is definitely a matter amount of work! Once you’ve completed it though your trees will produce better and you will only have regular pruning to do each year. Well done you two!

Thanks so much 😊 very true, this is a once every 5 year prune, apparently it creates the optimum harvest over a 5 year period but we don't get the olives after the first year

You two work so hard and your hard work shows with how your land has transformed. You are very sensible to recognise when you have had enough and when you need to rest. Don't burn yourselves out. Your land will still be there when you are ready to continue work. Love you guys.

Firewood for generations ! Suggest you get a bigger chipper or rent the bigger one annually to process the olive debris. The branches would be a better mulch if they were chipped ... less of a fire hazard for the food forest. All the best !

That mossy grey looking stuff on the olive tree bark is called lichen, which is not harmfull to trees. Wondering about you being able to use prunnings as fill in berms etc. as others posting videos state that it all must be cleared, removed or burnt due to fire hazards.

You might do well by investing in a couple of thick tarps. One for the wood chips coming from the chipper and a huge one to load all of the branches onto, then moved from one area to another without having to make so many trips back and forth. It would save your energy. It may well be time to also invest in a better wood chipper, one that can handle thicker branches, take a look at the one Theo of The Indie Projects uses, it's a beast and never jams. How's the tractor fund coming along? Take care, be well ~
@rootsdownhomestead

Awesome stuff. Free fire wood, free mulch and the pruned trees will create new roots. Today I pruned one laurel tree, and I shredded all the branches, and I was exhausted. But I had to prune all the branches by hand and sometimes it was a bit hard to reach and to use enough force at the same time. But now that I have a small electric garden shredder it feels like harvesting instead of doing a boring job. The mulch is pure gold for the garden, so I am happy with the result. And the aroma from the laurel tree is amazing. 👍
