Welcome to our one acre homestead in beautiful Ireland! Join us as we take you through the highs and lows of day 31 of our 14 day homestead land clearance challenge. We know it is now day 31, maybe we were a little ambitious with how long we thought it would take to clear the one acre homestead.
With Dawn nearing the end of the dry stone wall clearance, she spends hours removing bits of remaining moss and roots from the wall crevices. Ben gives an update on how well harvesting rain water from the barn roof has gone in just 24 hours and explains what difference it will make to our off grid rain water harvesting in the future. There is also terrible news for the Blossom Watch fans on the channel, what was the star of the show has taken a turn for the worse in the snow. The is so much water from the thawing snow, land drainage is the only way forward.
With the goal of being able to have animals and grow our own food for sustainable living in our sights, we are getting excited as everything is falling in to place on the homestead here in Ireland
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more homesteading adventures!

Mother nature doing her pruning. You can plant some new trees and bushes. I found this looking for things that will grow in wet soil hope it helps with planning your garden 11 acres of boggy land in Lancashire UK. The best thing to grow on boggy soils would be willow or alder trees. They are good for biomass and may help to dry up the soil. Put them in the wettest part. They can even withstand stagnant water. other trees that may do well are: Elderberry Serviceberry quince some pears birch ash and holly. In terms of plants and shrubs that like moist soil: Rhubarb Dogwood cranberry and blueberry (especially if your soil is acid) mint and spearmint celery kale and many other brasiccas celeriac peppers tomatoes cucumbers

Sad but we have others and it was left to see how well it would do.... it didn't do very well :-( The does just fly, we have no idea where eight months has gone, it is all a bit of a blur. Hi Jay, thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing a few weeks ago. We need a load of drainage doing on the land as it seems we are quite low and the water can't go anywhere. Once that is done, we can start moving forward. Don't hold your breath for it to happen quickly though, we tend to take our time with the big stuff, but get there eventually. Thank you again :-)

Hi, it was a heart sinking moment, seeing the plum gone down. Greyson, my Springer boy, heard me say 'oh noooo' and came to put his head on my knee, he knew I was gutted about something. On a good note, the ditch really looks and sounds wonderful, you did a fab job of freeing that up Dawn, the work on the wall looks impressive too. Once you have worked out the drainage, you will be able to see where you are really headed. Hugs to both of you, it seems so unfair x

Awwww, our cats would have just looked at us and asked for food, that is the difference between a cat and a dog lol. That was the first time I saw the plum tree down. Normally I know what I am going to say and show you as I walk down the land, but not this day, I was truly sad. Dawn was exactly the same when I showed her. Her words were Oh No, too. Yes, the good note is the ditch runs nicely and once we get the land drainage sorted (one day) it will all be great. The wall cleaning should be finished soon, just need a bit of dry weather to let the mud dry out so Dawn can brush it. Thank you so much Ellen :-)

With fruit trees that old and spindly you know their time left is short. Brings you lost the tall spindly plum tree you might think twice to cut the spindly ones back a third this autumn, if not now before all the sap up is up in them. Hopefully you can get some time to get new trees situated to replace with as you go. It takes time, about 4 to 5 years to get much fruit on new trees, pretty much so roots can get established well is why. Keep well and warm. Dawn your diligence working on the wall is great!

Glad to see that you are able to build up your ŵarer supply. I trust you know about "navy showers"... get wet...turn the water off... apply soap and shampoo.... rinse off. Property looks really good, no longer derelict but now "country cute". So sorry about the plum tree.

Good evening John. The extra water is fantastic and huge weight off my mind. Now to see how long it lasts without rain, might need more storage. The snow was great as it just filled all of the tanks from day one, the timing of the video and then the snow was perfect. Maybe someone is looking down on us. Luka said he turns the shower off when doing his hair. I said not to worry. I am sure we all do, but it is important to me that the bits that I can do make the house run like a normal house. In this case, turn the tap on and water comes out. But yes, a navy shower is required from time to time, depressing as it is. I will get it sorted one way or another. A well would be the end to my stress I think, or even a puddle which never emptied will do too. Thanks for watching and commenting John.

So sad about your plum tree. I could see how much enjoyment you got out of the blossoms. And now they’ll be no plum fruit in the fall. At least not from this tree. Can you maybe choose a few of your other fruit trees and brace them? Since they no longer have the weight of the ivy on them, or the support of the vines, perhaps a stout log, pounded into the ground next to them& tied to it will support them until they’re able to support themselves. Just a thought! P. S. Could you maybe take some cuttings from the plum tree that fell over & root them and start more? It would take a long time but you wouldn’t lose the tree completely. I don’t know if plum trees can be propagated that way, but it would be worth looking into. (Oops! I forgot this was an older video and hadn’t just happened. Ignore me!)
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 2 месяца назад
Oh you and us both, it really did make us quite say when we saw it lying on the ground! Who knew you could get attached to a plum tree?! We really do need to get round to bracing the other trees especially as they are quite young trees. Fingers crossed we get some fruit from one of the other ones. Luckily all the ones in that little area are from the same species so fingers crossed at least one of those grows up to be a big tree! I do think I will take cuttings from all of the fruit trees as we’re not sure how long the couple of apple trees will last and it would be nice to be able to put them back on the land if they don’t survive another year. 😊

Hello, if you have a super long drill bit (older the better), I would drill down into the flooded areas to help the water to drain away (an extra big scarify) as well as a normal one over the land with a fork and just keep stabbing the soil to make drain holes or maybe your friendly Farmer has a gadget that can go on the back of his tractor that will do the same job for you?. Maybe your first crop to put on the land is a very thirsty plant which will help soak up the excess moisture. Maybe something that can double up as a green manure and you can dig it back into the land as a soil improver too? Whether you planning on growing or not, you might have to sort it out before you can have animals on there? Just ideas for you. Amazing work on that wall. Are you cutting out those trees growing in the wall? As the roots will only get bigger and make the wall fall down (sorry)
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi Tracy, how are you. The wall will probably have the tree roots cut as they are bursting out in sections. It isn't something Dawn wants to do but the wall is more important. The big puddle Dawn stood in in her wellies is the result of the tractor from the Autumn when the roof fell in on the outbuilding and he tried to get to the back of the outbuilding. The tyre tracks are still there. We are going to have to put proper drainage in the land all going to the ditches to stand a chance of getting rid of how wet it is. The annoying thing is that give it three days without rain, it all drains away on it's own, and you would never know, but with a drop of rain it is back again. Rain is good for the tanks, terrible on the land lol. Thank you for watching and commenting tonight :-)

Aww Colette we were sooo sad to see that tree down. 🙁 ooh yes it is very boggy, I would say it has gotten worse over the years though as the previous owners years ago, grew all sorts of vegetables from the land. It’s quite handy in a way to see where the water looks as it gives us the knowledge of where the drainage is most needed. Sooo pleased with the wall and you’re right it does make it look wider as about 6 inches of vegetation has come off in places! Thanks Colette, you take care too. Xx

A sad Day 31 with the loss of the 2 trees. Am so sad as well that you lost one that had so many blossoms on it. That being said there are other trees that are blooming and that is good! Dawn, your cleaning of the outside of the wall is epic and it looks so very good. What a nice job and it really is showing off what a dry stack wall should be! The land is really an Irish bog and will benefit from a few drainage "ditches" going into your stream when you get around to it. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures and see you tomorrow! Oh yes the wall, it’s looking great I finally had a day off yesterday so I haven’t done anymore to it yet and today will be another day off. I’d like to say Ben had a day off to but he still had editing to do. Oh the water is amazing! It will give us so much more water, maybe even more than we can hold right now lol but it’s so lovely to know that we should be able to shower and use the washing machine without worrying quite so much! Hi Elaine That is a real shame with your hawthorn tree as they are great for the birds with the berries. It sounds exactly like our issues. @thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Good morning Shae, thank you for joining us and commenting :-) Someone else said about a pond but they were thinking due to the standing water on the land. Either way we talked about a pond before we came over last year. I used to have a couple of ducks long ago in a small back garden. To have some on an acre of land would be great. We have thought about using the ditch water for the animals etc and it is possible with some bits and pieces and a pump, but since then, I have learned from farmer neighbour, and not an animal we will probably every have, but cows don't like dirty water. Not sure what defines dirty water, but they don't like it lol So I suppose proving it was filtered / cleaned enough, it is a great idea. With the IBCs it could get out of hand and a single large tank somewhere could be the way forward. I am learning as I go, but with the water now available from the barn roof, a BIG tank could be the future. A cuppa was indeed had, maybe even two haha. Thank you again Shae :-)

We have done some small channels by the house to keep that away from the walls, another proper job that needs doing, so we may indeed have to do the same sort of thing for the land. We do think it could be a mini digger job for us though and get it all done at the same time. Even if it is just a dug trench to start with it will direct / hold water. The plum was just sad. The video was edited and lots cut out but we were down there about 30 minutes looking around, seeing what had fallen more under the weight of the snow. Sadly, the plum was the worst affected. Yes, Dawn is itching to get the end rebuilt, the same with the outbuildings, she is just waiting for the weather to change so she can start with the lime mortar. Yes, it will be interesting to see what the rose does. Dawn noticed it was different and not just another bramble so out came the plant app to identify it. Thank you again :-)

That’s sad about losing the plum tree. Good idea to rethink those other trees that are rather precarious. Those shots of the snow surprised, never thought of snow in Ireland, but it is pretty far north.

Aww it really was, not sure why so sad for us but it felt really sad seeing it lying there like that! Yep, definitely need a revisit of what is still “standing”. It gets ever so windy around here so not great having lots of potentially unsafe trees around! We were forecast snow but it took us by surprise just how much there was! ❤️

A big shame! Hadn’t really given the snow a thought with the weight it puts on the trees, so was quite a shock to find it on the ground 🙁 I think we might end up planting quite a few new ones with how many that might eventually needs to come out. Golly, I was so excited to tell Ben that we are on Blossom watch here. I got a notification that cherry blossoms should start showing up around the 20th of the month. I was born and raised in Washington DC and they are a big thing here. Then to watch and see the loss of trees. I was so sad for you. But you went around to the other tree and there were more on that branch, and I was glad you still have one of the plums. Also, I am amazed at how much water comes off a roof, so much so, that your pump could not keep up. Dawn that wall is looking better and better.

Good morning Dory, how are you? Blossom Watch USA - You know what that means? Every time you comment you need to give us a blossom count of at least one of your trees :-) 20th of the month, not long to wait now then, that is brilliant. We were out yesterday and some of the cherry here had loads of blossoms on, I don't know if an edible cherry or just ornamental, but it was full of blossom. Yes, all is not lost with our plum tree(s). At the end of the day they have grown out of the old fallen plum tree trunk so and we were unsure how they would do. To be fair though, we didn't expect it to break off at the base :-( Yes, the amount of water the snow gave us was incredible, it was like hours and hours of heavy rain in just a couple of hours. It has really helped and the barn drain pipe is fantastic for us moving forward. Isn't that wall great :-) Thank you as always Dory.

Sorry to hear about the trees Dawn and Ben, always sad to see one fall, but I guess sometimes it is inevitable when clearing the land. Still time to replace with a bareroot. I can't remember which video it was where you showed the pine martin. As far as I am aware they are super rare in Ireland, I have never seen one, so that was a great bit of footage! The stone wall is just beautiful Dawn. We had something similar at home when I was young to the front of our house and my mum planted snowdrops in the moss between the soldiers, so in the spring it just looked lovely. Dying to see what the two of you are up to next in the garden, it really is a blank canvas now ready for your stamp 😍

Aww, thanks Clare. ❤️ Yeah we were very sad to see that one fallen…it sort of didn’t surprise us in a way as that whole area had so much dead and rotting stuff in there that had to be cleared but I suppose once we took away that, a lot of what was left lost it’s props. Still gutting though. Strange how attached to a tree you can be! 🤔🌳 That’s good to hear with bare roots, I’ve been reading and watching but thought we might have been too late. I watched your first garden video over again earlier for the forest trees website again just to see what we can do and get still. He was a right little sod, that pine marten, he deliberately drop kicked the food bin to knock it over! Luckily we had the handle locked lol. Cute little things, but quite vicious little things we’ve been told. Aww I love the idea of the snowdrops. They are such a dainty and beautiful plant. I bet that did look beautiful when they started to bloom. I absolutely love the white thorns growing out of the wall but I’m going to have to cut them down otherwise we might lose the wall and I don’t want that happening. Looking forward to getting it built back up and looking good again. Still a few bits and pieces to get done…notably all the piles of soil that we have to scrape back outside the outbuildings 😂 I really can’t wait to get started on it I get so impatient and just want to get going properly 😂

I’m so sorry that you lost the trees. It might be a good idea to rake your whole property to one side so the whole land has a slight slope towards the little creek. Good morning, hope everything is ok your end. Yeah, the plum tree is sad but maybe a sign to check all the trees for future snow, hopefully no more snow this year though. We will see. We are certainly going to need some drainage channels digging at the very least. We think once these are done.... one day, that the land should drain much quicker in heavy rain or melting snow. Loved the series of land and vegitation clearing... What hard yakka...!!! Hello from Australia! No i know we have a vastly different climate... But when 'the wet' set in when we lived in the 'Outback'... we had a similar problem... but it was seasonal only! Now while i acknowledge im not there, and its not my land, I wonder if perhaps you may benefit from some contour drains on your land... by using the natural slope and lay of the land, these contours would aid in the drainage of your property... It seems such a shame, that your water logged land is such a problem... (Though i watch an Irish dairy farmers videos, and he always improving drainage!) Water needs to drain more quickly... Not an easy remedy... Always great to share the great outdoors with you too. Cheers..

It was some hard going work here and there! So pleased we did it all though because other than mowing here and there it is still looking great everywhere! Yes we are in agreement with you for using the contours of the land for the drainage, it’s been a benefit to work for so long on the land like we did because it’s meant we have got to learn how the land lies and where the water pools, for when we do get to the drainage. Is it ifarmwefarm that you watch by any chance? It’s been a really wet year since we moved over so the land in lots of places over here has stayed wet for so long. Hopefully in time we will be able to drain it off enough that it doesn’t get so water logged everywhere lol Thank you for sharing the outdoors with us ❤️

Awww man, sorry about the plum tree, and all that clearing work you have to do on the fallen willow again. Mother nature, she's a B, whatcha gonna do? 😦The wall is looking good, I would be tempted to take those blackthorns out and plant maybe more wall friendly patches, but, plenty of time to consider it. Once you get that tractor into level it all you can then determine where the gullies should be, and where drainage should be. All in due course, but now you have the lay of it completely soaked, I was worried about that with all the vegetation gone that maybe absorbed it or maybe it just hid it? It's a blessing in disguise, because it really does allow you to see where drainage is required.🤨 I was researching drainage for my daughter's farm, and was considering channel drains you can add on to, it may help between the buildings and in front of them to reroute the water in real time vs. a french drain. I was considering making my own mold/form for her as the cost of those can be crazy. Awesome the IBC is already filled, definitely get a few more, in due course, you can always use one for garden usage. 😃 I hope you both are keeping warm! It was 80f/26C degrees here today, I think we are officially in spring.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi Suzanne :-) Thanks for great comments. The most important answer is Yes, we are warm, I always have it warm for us. I hate the cold and not being able to warm up quickly bothers me, so the range is always going. Secondly, we love how you comment with the future in mind and not immediate actions, you seem to understand that there is much that needs doing and Rome wasn't built in a day as they say, so thank you as it is refreshing. Yes, since Dawn cleared behind the outbuildings we have been able to watch where the water goes, flows, sits etc and we knew the bottom needed drainage but I think the snow melting as quickly as it did shocked us with how much standing water there was. Up until winter, the marsh marigolds covered the floor but we knew it was wet. But like you say, drainage is the key to it all. Around the house we are thinking it will be real time drainage, but the huge rock we live on may have other ideas and it may just be the natural flow of water if we can't dig deep enough. Just outside the back door is a huge lump of exposed rock, and we know how much fun the electricity company had putting our electric pole up lol. The wall will more than likely see the small trees gone growing in it, which is a shame as the blackthorn and other thigs with spikes may have been planted in it on purpose. But the wall is more important and we can always plant another blackthorn behind the wall. I hope I have replied to all of your comments, but I think you have worked out we seem to be on the same thought process as you. Love your comments, thank you :-) Oh, the plum tree :-( We are very sad about that plum tree, silly really, but it felt special.

Yeah I think it might be a trial and error thing with the drainage. Not sure if getting a digger on the land might cause us even more problems with how squashy it is lol.
