Finally had a chance to put this 3 point tractor dethatcher to the test! I have been waiting for the soil temperature to get to the optimal level for seed germination and now is the time! Before finding this tool, I had considered using a Pine Straw Rake or a Landscape Rake, but had fears (and read from others) that it would be too aggressive on my lawn, tearing it up unnecessarily.
This 3 point tractor dethatcher proved to be just the ticket and worked exactly how I needed it. For my purposes, I wanted the thatch broken up and dirt scarified (roughed up) prior to overseeding this fall. This creates the best seed to soil contact allowing for vastly improved germination.

Afternoon Courtney I’ve had good luck with uncooked grits available in most food stores. Sprinkle some on the mounds; the worker ants take the grits to the Queen. She eats the grits but they expand killing the Queen which destroys the nest. Hope this helps!!

A possible solution that I utilize in my home for pest control is a little Dawn Dish soap in a little water. Just fill the ant hills with that soapy water. Be Forewarned that you will be completely amazed by the volume of soapy water it will take. If you can fill your spray rig with warm water and put about 5 drops per gallon. As you drive to your furthest hole it will mix and dissolve as you are driving and just spray with you spot spraying wand into they're anthill. You can most likely just run your pump at low speed while you fill their hole. The slower the better because you are aiming to saturate they're entire ants nest which has numerous tunnels and can be as deep as 2 meters with hundreds of little pockets and the mixture will tend to be quite foamy as it is sprayed and needs time to calm down. When liquid comes down the perimeter of the entrance from flooding the nest, your finished with the nest. If you have more than four ant hills, mix it by the tankfull and take a note of how much each nest is using so that when you get down to the last two, you can aim to have minimal excess mixed up. The whole mixture can foam up at times, making it a little trickier to see how much is actually in the tank. The reason this works is because the ants that do not drown are going to wind up suffocating. As many of us know, suffocation is what happens when unable to get enough breathable air in an enovironment of mostly gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases. Drowning is a result of fluid displacing breathable air which is why we cough and sneeze. Dogs and cats tend to leave it alone and if they get into it at all, they just have extremely loose stools. This is the same stuff used on dishes.

A bit early in the season for this question. Curious to see what this does with wet leaves that have matted down. Not fun to rake. MCS can't always get them up. Best to not let them mat down, but sometimes life puts you behind in the yard work..LOL! Thanks for sharing!

Looks like going backwards the tines are parallel to the ground not doing too much. Now you need a bagger on the mower to pick up the thatch!

Honestly, I think it might be more effective going backwards. It's good going forward though as well.

I might be wrong, but I think those tines would do even better if they were bent on the ends. You wouldn't have to go backwards. They would hook in to dethatch and drag it out.

That would most certainly make it too aggressive. The point of this tool is not to be aggressive. Otherwise, you're dealing with a pine straw rake or landscape rake essentially. This "gentleness" allows you to control the amount of thatch you remove. If I weren't videoing, I would have done one pass on my .5 acre mowable lawn in high range is 15 minutes or so. Time really isn't a issue, but having a tool that won't damage your lawn is key. Plus, this tackles other jobs as well. Thanks for watching!

@@GoodWorksTractors I was just considering how aggressive the motorized ones are that you can rent. I used to have a dethatcher blade that fit my push mower. It was aggressive but had one bent tine on each end of a flat blade. I had to keep the deck height adjusted just right so it wouldn't scalp.

hay bud we had black ants here in new york. and with two dogs i wanted the ants gone. my friend turned me on to triazicide sold at home depot in 5000 sqft bags here in Niagara falls NY for 8 dollars work great but you need to use the spreadable one not the one that goes on the end of your garden hose

Looks like a fantastic tool. It appears to be tough, but the teeth, I'm sure, can break over time. I'm assuming you can purchase replacement teeth if needed. The only issue I see with its design is that since the tooth's coils wrap around the tooth bars, you'll have to remove multiple teeth to replace one in the inner area of the tooth bar. Not a deal breaker per se, but something to be aware of.

I have a question more so than a comment. I understand going forward and backwards while detaching; economy of movement. I'll try to say this so even I can understand it. The rakes on my detacher are rolled around the bar they mounted on like yours. If I'm going forward, I'm going against the the grain so to speak, the rakes really do their thing and we are doing some serious work. If I go backwards, I'm going with the grain and the rakes are riding more on the surface than really scratching up the grass. The difference between going forward and backwards was significant so, I just go forward. I seem to get a lot better results. Am I approaching this process the wrong way? Thanks!

I understand what you're you saying. However, I've found going backwards works quite well for me too. I wouldn't say there's a wrong way, find the method that works best for your situation.

So are you saying this can work as a pine straw rake also? How about a video comparing and contrasting dethatcher and pine straw rake, cause if you have lawn with lots of thatch. Pine straw rake may be more benificial.

I'm trying! She's doing well, day #10 from TPLO surgery. She thinks she's back to normal, but needs to remain immobilized for about 8 weeks to properly heal. She isn't happy about that, haha!

If you use this attachment to dethatch and scarify the ground prior to overseeding, would it be useful to run over the overseeded area again with it to help scratch the seed into the ground or maybe just roll the area to press seed down or simply leave it alone?

Possibly, although I think the biggest benefit is using it ahead of time. I had really good germination last fall and didn't do anything after spreading the seed.

I'm not planning to bring it into piles...just suck it up with the bagger. I actually want some of it to settle back down as I need some thatch. However, a backpack blower makes quick work too. Either to blow it into smaller piles for collection or blow it into the woods.

I mow an acre lot, would you recommend a 1 series or X700 series. I would also use it for snow removal on my driveway. Im concerned about the weight of the ! series rutting the lawn.

Both are heavy, but both are pretty easy on a lawn too. Either will accomplish the tasks you desire.

Rutting can be a problem with any mower. I normally mow with a B series Kubota, the lawn has to be really soggy for it to cause rutting. However I also have a small John Deere 160 that weighs less than half of the kubota and will cause rutting in my lawn with a lot less moisture content. The contact patch of the tires and it’s relationship to the weight of the mower is more of the key to me. Gotta have some flotation.

@@GoodWorksTractors that makes sense, I periodically get frustrated with ROPS devices. They tend to get in the way more than they be of use. They are just a huge cumbersome bureaucracy driven contraption. In 13 years I have yet to see them save anyone from injury because they are only as effective as the operators seatbelt usage which quickly gets in the way with certain tasks. Safety is more about the head of the operator than any safety device out there in the world.

Hate to tell you this, but that is most definitely not a 'dethatcher' or 'scarifier'. At best it's a rake, it pulls up dead grass, but it definitely does not pull up thatch...f
