Detoured is a show where we explore new places and car culture. This episode brings us to Mini Maruyama in Tokyo, Japan. This one has a longer format than usual, but my goodness, it's the only way to accomodate Maruyama-san's mind blowing collection. We got to nerd out on Shelby Daytona Coupes, classic minis, Minisprints, and much much more. Mini Maruyama is not just a famous mini tuning shop, but is a museum in it's own right.

Oh im so excited for these videos!! I believe Maruyama-san was the man who stepped up when rover in the late 80s said they didnt want to continue the mini cooper. He stepped in and made rover and john cooper aware there was a thriving scene in japan at the time. So thats where the deal was struck to produce his own series of minis built in collaboration with rover and john cooper. Amazing! Genuinely amazing that man is a true legend. I could loose days of my life in his shop! every piece of machinery has so much history there. Thats a dream come true right there.

I recently joined the Classic Mini world when i got stationed here (Yokota AB) 7 months ago and i'm totally hooked. I still haven't found my way to that shop but your video alone was absolutely overwhelming with awesome information and history that if i dont ever make it out there, i think i'd be alright knowing this awesome video is here for everyone including myself to enjoy. Thank you for making this video and i can't wait to make my way out there one day.

Man I love seeing these types of videos. I want to go to Japan so bad. So many craftsmen and people who just have so much passion for what they do and love sharing it. Of course it goes on around the world but something about Japan is just special to me. Love this channel. Hope to be getting a classic mini soon myself. BTW. I want to see his collection! It's been over 3 years!

No, he says "Present, present for you". And he had used the word "present" a lot in reference to the cars which had been gifted to him so he definitely knows this meaning of that word.

I’m probably preaching to the choir but in case anyone is wondering, the 287/289 Cobras (CSX2*** chassis) were more suited to racing than 427 partly because of the weight and also because they had to completely redesign the car (hence the CSX3*** nomenclature) as the original Cobras had pretty archaic suspension (transverse leaf springs on the front) and width was an issue with the 427 (7-liter). As it was, the 287/9 motor had a pretty good rev range and was a better fit balance-wise. Near the end that cat ice cream truck cracked me up. At first I thought it was Hello Kitty themed.

The Mini as it was needed a lot of updating done to it to make it a real good car from the engine, gearbox to suspension and electrics, and still sticking to simplicity a la Trabant. If it was built in Japan for the Japanese market, I am sure the Japanese would have made it into a better car. 1975 Mini vs 1975 Honda Civic.
@Stevestonmotorco
@Stevestonmotorco 5 лет назад
I think you're right. Minis came pre-assembled for the Japanese market and they were only able to tack extra things on as additions (usually awkwardly placed like the AC unit, because of space constraints). It would have been cool to see what parts they would have changed if they had that liberty.

Really enjoyed this video...I love the small shops in Japan...problem is that they are spread out and takes days to see many of them. Some pics of my visit (bit.ly/2AcWQTv), but mostly around the Miata at the time. Hope to go back to Japan and visit Turtle, Longmans, Westlake, GARAGE Mini, etc. Keep posting vids!
