First start of my 3-53T after a total overhaul. Engine temp was 4.5C and 40F with an outside temp of -3C or 26F. Quick runup to check for leaks etc, before I paint it and install it on my compressor. Happy Detroit.:)

As an old DD buff myself, it sounds great! They are really cool to hear them on some of the old tractors pulling at antique & classic tractor pulls. For those asking about turbos, they had a gear driven blower, and later silver series had turbos added. I have seen one in a Chevy 2500 pickup in Pa.

@@detroitgarage9430 That will be a happy compressor. It's truly a beastie looking machine. After following you on your rebuilds, without any deviation, I touched off my 4-53 tonight. I was frankly shocked when it came alive after about only 5 revolutions! What blissful music! You know what I mean. I have a new 24v starter and it spun up so fast that the motor didn't know if it was running or not! Thank you again ever so much for your guidance and taking time to answer my questions. I still have three more to rebuild. Now I have much more confidence that if I do them the same way, as you have, they will be just fine. In my book, you are the Detroit Guru!

Love your videos! Would you happen to have any of those covers that go over the cam and balance shaft on the back of the engine? Can I just make some from flat steel? Also need a blank cover for where the thermostat housing goes on the back of the head, and that cover to the lower left of the cam and balance shaft. I can also make them from steel plate but it would be nice to get them already made.

Very nice.. A Gamma Goat 🐐 Is looking for her missing DD 353 . 🤠 What causes the blue smoke? Shouldn't the revs be up around 12 to 1500rs breaking in?
@detroitgarage9430
@detroitgarage9430 3 года назад
Lol, this was an industrial 353 that ran a belt pulley. The blue smoke is because the engine is still very cold. It will stop this once the engine is put under a load and worked. The revs should be kept under 1000 rpm for 10 minutes to check for leaks etc. Now that that has been completed it has to be worked hard at 80-90% load. I'll have it idling at about 1000 or so and full load at 2100.
@georgephillips6520
@georgephillips6520 3 года назад
Great skill level! Thanks for the video. I recently purchased a 353 and it appears to be stuck. it was under a shed. Any thing to look for other than the basic piston seizure?
@detroitgarage9430
@detroitgarage9430 3 года назад
Thanks.:) Yes, you can pull the airbox cover off and have a look and see if there is any or how much water. You could also have a look at the blower and confirm that's not seized, if it's loose there will be some back lash. What I've done in the past is pull the injectors and fill the cylinders up with acetone and oil mix. The pull the starter and bar over engine with a pry bar. If the engine isn't stuck too bad this will work, if not it's overhaul time.:)

@@detroitgarage9430 I know part of why they can't rev that high is the stroke, at least with the 71's I know it's a 5 inch stroke.. granted there's 5 inch stroke big blocks that turn 7500rpm but that's a full drag engine with aluminum rods and a super light flywheel/crank that probably won't last long.. but iron rods and crank with a massive flywheel couldn't handle that.. Though I would love to build a 6k rpm capable 8V71! (like I'll ever have the money to.. but it'd be cool)

@@jaratt85 use a 6 V51 T..at 3450 rpms, it sounds like a V-12 turning 7000 rpms - because the 2 stroke cycle fires once every revolution instead of once every 2 revolutions on a 4-cycle engine..

@@detroitgarage9430 Good morning for you! Glory to Ukrainian heroes!!! I didn’t even think that the M113 had a two-stroke diesel engine. Many thanks to you (the people of the USA) and all NATO countries for helping Ukraine! Your equipment saves our soldiers' lives! As a mechanic of off-road vehicles, I really like the (not SUV) Subaru Leon, a full-fledged part-time all-wheel drive with a transfer case, there is a downshift, but the most interesting thing is that it has part-time on the contrary)) permanent front-wheel drive, rear-mounted manually. Cool car. It would still have to install a two-stroke diesel engine with a volume of 2.5 liters in general, it would have turned out to be an ideal car. Perfect for me of course :) In general, I really want to someday assemble my detonation engine with a pressure in the cylinder of 60-70 bar. it has an estimated efficiency should be around 60% and very economical...)) The main thing is that the greater the pressure in the cylinder during the explosion, the longer the force driving the piston down is retained, right?!)) Well, the crankshaft axis must also be shifted away from the central axis of the cylinders! Under this condition, when the piston is at the top point and an explosion occurs, the force of the explosion will immediately be directed directly to cranking the crankshaft .... (I always really didn’t like that in an internal combustion engine an explosion occurs at a very unfavorable moment (when the connecting rod is perpendicular to the crankshaft axis), while most of the explosion force turns not into rotation but into impact, which is not very good .... Offsetting the crankshaft axis to the side will fix this problem very well. In short, the internal combustion engine is a very unfinished thing, you can talk about it for a very long time ...)))
