First start of the Detroit Diesel 4-53T that I've transplanted into my 1949 Diamond T 306 truck. The 4-53T is a 2-stroke diesel engine (commonly referred to as a Screaming Jimmy). This engine has been re-built with cross head pistons, 7A77 injectors, a Silver turbo, and Jacob's brakes.

I've been wanting to get a truck with a 4-53T in it as my first truck in a few years, any suggestions on where to find one? When I get enough money I'd like to go to a junkyard and get a 1973-1991 Chevrolet K30 Crew Cab Long Bed Dually and put a 4-53T In it along with a good transmission like a 5 Speed Allison Transmission and 3 speed Brownie Box. But until then, what are some factory trucks that have the 4-53T that I could find for sale in the United States?
@hanscustomshop
@hanscustomshop 11 месяцев назад
They aren't common, but do come up occasionally. Look in the Detroit Facebook pages, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc. They were factory installed in medium duty trucks in the 60's, 70's, and 80's (I'm not sure of the exact years). GMC was obviously most common.

Do those also have a supercharger?
@hanscustomshop
@hanscustomshop 4 месяца назад
All of these old 2 cycle Detroit Diesel engines have a "blower". The blower is sometimes mistaken for a supercharger. But the blower doesn't increase intake pressure like a supercharger... it moves fresh air into the cylinders when the intake ports are exposed to the air box, and pushes exhaust gases out of the cylinders when the exhaust valves are open. In order to actually increase intake pressure, turbochargers were a performance option on some models. The turbo feeds high pressure air into the blower inlet.
@DartzIRL
@DartzIRL Год назад
Is that running without coolant? Or is that a stupid question?
@hanscustomshop
@hanscustomshop Год назад
It does have water in it. I talk about what's going on with the cooling system just before I start the engine. 👍
@bertgrau3934
@bertgrau3934 Год назад
Would be interested in how much RPM that engine runs. I drove a 67 Chevy C80 with a 6V53, it came from the factory set to run 2800 RPM, then a Chevy dealer set it to 3200 RPM. it didn't have a turbo and was rated at 160 horsepower. Had a 5 speed and 4 speed transmission. Wasn't fast, top speed was about 60 MPH.
@hanscustomshop
@hanscustomshop Год назад
My engine is governed at 2800 rpm. That 3200 rpm for a 6v53 is out of spec, but it probably wasn't uncommon to turn them up that high. Must have sounded angry!

A bit of free advice for all of those who want to revive an old Driptroit. First start should always be done with the valve cover off and a pair of vice grips on the fuel rack so you can manual control in case the governor jams. Make sure all the injector racks move through their entire travel. Have a thick metal plate that will fit over the intake to shut off the air supply should the engine get away from you.
@hanscustomshop
@hanscustomshop Год назад
This engine wasn't exactly "revived". It's been rebuilt and I just installed Jacob's brakes, so have recently been under the rocker cover, adjusted the valves, and checked the fuel rack. I was confident in the operation of the fuel rack. I do always have a steel plate on hand to block off the turbo, just in case.
@richardmaurer9002
@richardmaurer9002 Год назад
Apparently you have no idea what you are talking about. The governor doesn’t jam, the injectors do. If the governor can’t push the injector to no-fuel, what makes you think you can do it with a pair of vise grips? Those governor parts are not all that robust. Forcing the control tube with a pair of vise grips means something has to bend in order to cut off the remaining functional injectors. Anyone who uses vice-grips in lieu of fixing the emergency shut-down is an idiot. Instead of bending up a bunch of expensive shit, one has merely to calmly walk up to the engine, beverage in one hand, and stop the engine with one finger.
@KrashPad
@KrashPad Год назад
@@richardmaurer9002 Well I guess you forgot to read the part about making sure the fuel racks had freedom of movement. You are correct, I misspoke when I said governor instead of injectors. I disagree a governor can be overcome without bending anything, anyway damaging a governor is preferable to putting a leg out of bed. My comment were aimed at giving pause to the uninitiated not intended to annoy an expert, for that I do apologize

A 12 valve Cummins would been much better engine and fit not to mention lighter, a lot more powerful than that Detroit. That thing is less than 200hp at no torque it’s basically a watered down boat motor..
