+brittany culjan I am a charter captain. This means that I take out mostly people new to fishing the Detroit River. Some people have been out with me 5 or 6 times and they are getting really good but, most of my clients still sort of struggle to find the bottom. When fishing shallow light jigs are no problem. When you must fish 35 to 45 FOW it will take forever to get the light jig to the bottom. Not to mention the fall rate changes. I have tried light jigs Don't feel there are any benefits. I fished for 6 weeks straight on the Detroit River last year and No one on my boat fished less than 3/4 ounce......we never even used a 5/8 ounce
+brittany culjan +Matt Sell I dont jig vertical for Eyes in PA but I do fish NJ every weekend during season in 60ft of water. Our jigs are 4-8oz depending upon drift speed but the key ingredient to vertical fishing is as light as possible/true vertical. When we jig the river for striper in 40ft we use 3/4oz, I cannot imagine using anything less than 1/2oz infact I wouldnt even let anyone use less than that. You need to feel the bottom, hold it, and be able to react immediately to snags and bites. Dragging light jigs to me, normally causes short strikes.
