What happens when the home becomes a place of discomfort rather than rest and retreat?
20 April 2024 Art Exhibition - In association with Kulturnatt and Detroit Stockholm's 'Open Studios'.
There are a multitude of things that can make us feel uncomfortable in our homes: involuntary isolation, monsters under the bed, a mind racing with thoughts that won’t leave us alone. In Uncanny Domestic the artists Åsa Ekman, Laura Tynan, Jenny Soep, Malin Neuman and Steph Orozco have each offered their interpretation of the theme. The result is an exhibition in which the home becomes a domain for - if not the outright sinister - its less threatening but equally uncomfortable cousin.
Previously shown at Juxtapose Art Fair in Aarhus 2023. Now revisited and reimagined for exhibition at Detroit Stockholm.
The exhibition is organised with the support of the Confederation of Swedish Art Associations and The Culture Council.
About the Artists
*Malin Neuman* has studied art at various universities including Zurich University of the Arts from which she holds an MA in Fine Arts. Her artistic practice includes a wide range of materials and techniques such as textile, video and sculpture. She often works with subjects related to language, gender and embodiment of space.

*Åsa Ekman* works with several different mediums; acrylics, oil, ink, pyrography, engraving, sculpture and tattooing. Her work often contains fantastical or surreal elements inspired by dreams, mysticism and notions of beauty, often adding visually disturbing or humorous elements.

*Steph Orozco* - Unusual thinker, garment maker, and fashion developer, she understands fashion as an artistic discipline and constant experimentation. Searching for quality through every aspect of the garment: the textile process, the materials, the silhouette and the social context.
Realising - as a result - unexpected controlled creations.

*Laura Tynan* is an Irish visual artist making work on paper, including printmaking, drawing and rust contact printing. She is drawn to the subject of home; its literal and symbolic meaning, and the individual’s experience of space and what it means to them. That interest in home extends to the environment and a desire to look for non-toxic, low-tech ways of making prints and images using rust from found objects and homemade inks and dyes.

*Jenny Soep* is a documentary illustrator and visual artist using live drawing to explore the ’human-experienced-moment', whether as performer or audience member, often drawing live performances from the perspective of the audience, but also creating drawings from the inner psyche via dreams, embarrassing memories and painful regrets, most notably in her ‘Waking Thoughts’ series started in 2016.
