I like to call this a "betrayal turnabout". Basically when the game suddenly pushes you into either betraying or getting betrayed, and suddenly things become entirely different. Not enough to make it a different game, but for the sake of being a big plot twist. I saw other games do this, such as GTA San Andreas, or the first two Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. I'd love to know more games with these kind of twists, because honestly, they really are an amazing way to turn around the plot and make it further interesting.

Man, when I got out of the MJ12 labs and discovered I was in UNATCO, it’s like my whole world went upside down. Brilliant storytelling through level design
Oh c'mon, it's not that surprising, i first time played this game a few days back and wondered to see what was that one level 4 door, but i was 100% sure i was going to see it again, and i remembered that level half-way through the escape of MJ12, so it was pretty damn obvious and predictable. You have to be brain dead for not guessing it before, especially because Daedalus tells you about it near the end.
It's weird, I've heard a lot of people recite that experience, but it was very different for me. Right after the inevitable death/surrender at the hands of Gunther during my first playthrough, waking up in the cells I figured immediately that I must be in UNATCO HQ. The prison block layout was nearly identical to the one you saw Simons interrogate the NSF troopers. I assumed right away that I must have been taken to the same cells, only to be shocked and surprised that behind the desk was a MJ12 trooper (already found their base in Hell's Kitchen by then) and that instead of the familiar hallway there was a bend around a corner that led me to a very unfamiliar place. It immediately clicked that this must be the place that was behind the locked doors in Medical.
Same for me here. I thought I must've been the brain dead one since usually stuff like this goes over my head in games. But since Navarre captured you anyway, where else would she take you but UNATCO? Then as soon as you see MJ12 on a computer screen you realize something weird is going on

I've always interpreted the tapping that grows more and more coherent at the beginning of the track as JC realizing that even his home isn't safe from the conspiracy.
Funny story: I was at the part where you have to visit Paul in his apartment, and I had a thought: “it’d be fun if we got to sneak around in unatco like we had to sneak around nsf bases.” WELL.
I was pretty much mindblown when I exited the MJ12 base only to find out that it was right beneath UNATCO headquarters... I always wondered what was behind that locked door.
One of the most fantastic pieces of music in this game. When you realize how Lebedev was right, how UNATCO was just a mere puppet to the MJ12, it's really impressive.
Love this track. It starts with kind of a forlorn, industrial, hopeless, impersonal feel to hit then takes a sharp turn to uplifting at 0:36. Sort of like the sudden intervention of a deus ex machina.
Always like how the starting to this song sounded like a broken machine. JC finally seeing the corroded and corrupted the gears in the world's institutions finally spinning out and breaking.
I think what I love most about this track is that it's definitely not an ambient track, it could have doubled as the combat one either. That's just how much danger you're in even sneaking about there , conveys it perfectly (though the real combat track is bitchin')
Simons always had that die-hard professionalism. I liked him, but Bob always had that sort of unrivalled apathy. Never let his morals obstruct his plans. Bob was an amazing villain, but Simons was always the perfect Henchman.
Bob page was the dood in human revolution too,you would also get an achievement for watching through the entire credits and seeing the "suprise" at the end.
Sharing VGM is something anyone with a PC and internet connection can do. I'm not special in that regard. As for my quick reply? You happened to catch my attention when I was already online 8-^).
One of the most memorable moments in games for me was connected to this track. This, and "Ops 2" from SS2 - and saying this, these tracks do sound somewhat similar.
I modded this track into OG XCom's alien base assault mission and the way it fits is just perfect. The tension, the deadly dangers lurking in each and every room, brilliant.
After escaping MJ12...the feeling of anger after discovering Paul's body earlier...the imminent reencounters with my "buddies" who all turned on me, and would shoot on sight...and the shock of realizing where I really was, as I continue to escape while possibly leaving a trail of bodies... This tune represents all of this with perfection.
Because you done fucked it up, i guess you killed everyone on the missions, maybe that's why they all betrayed you, i got everyone with me except for Sam and Manderley, because i got tired of playing Batman with the no kill rule and started doing so, so i was partially a killer for them, but forgiving enough. Also, you can save Paul from dying before you get captured by UNATCO to MJ12, you need to kill everyone inside the hotel building, and i mean EVERY UNATCO trooper.
Dam Sen No, they turn on you when you use the Satellite to send a distress signal to the NSF, and then Walton Simons activates your killswitch while commanding all the troops to shoot on sight. I’m also aware that Paul can be saved. There are several ways to play Deus Ex, and there are several outcomes.
@@ProtoFalcon07 No, because i did those exact same things and every staff member of UNATCO joined me to Hong Kong except for Sam Carter, because all this depends on how you did your missions. I started killing the NSF after reaching the warehouse in NYC, and that changed their impressions about me. But not enough to betray me.
Dam Sen like I said before, there are several ways to complete these missions and several outcomes-some of which I’m apparently not aware of because I never heard of these outcomes; I’ve only played the game, twice, but I’ve heard of some other outcomes aside from the two I’ve experienced-just not yours.
@@ProtoFalcon07 Yeah that's what makes the game so great, there's always something to explore. Try doing a pacifist run and even Sam Carter may join you. I'll sure do that once i'm done with my mixed run. Anyway, i just wanted to tell you that those outcomes that you got could all be changed for the better. Though i think it's fine if you kill the UNATCO troopers in the hotel, i don't think that would change our fond UNATCO staff member's opinions. There's a lot to explore.
When I got to the MJ12 labs, I actually predicted they were behind that inaccessible blast door in UNATCO... Considering how things were going, I kind of understood where I was going when I got imprisoned in the laboratory.

@@antipsychotic451 Because if they ignored the orders, they would be killed by the others. Fear and ignorance is what keeps society going. Even if they've done the worst of things, they had no choice to do it because they were gun pointed just as much. Judging the underlings isn't going to lead you anywhere, because they're just puppets to the main leader, which is who you should aim for instead.
My first play through was blind and I was trying my best to get immersed in the story and characters. The beat drop in this track sent a chill down my spine IRL, driving home the idea that I was truly entering the unknown! I didn't know who I could trust any more! I just wish the rest of the song was good enough to listen too by itself without the game. I was playing a stealth/pistols build with a few points in armor skill for when I absolutely had to engage in a fire fight
even though I had is spoiled, I forgot about it, and was expecting the checkpoint to lead to some subterranean entrance, like in stargate, and I experience on the best moments in gaming when I found my way into this segment.
This was incredible because I saw the place you exit the MJ12 labs from when I first came to UNATCO, and assumed it was something I'd unlock the key into when I got further with UNATCO. I guess that was true after all, but not quite in the way I thought.
I was so stupid that when I exited the MJ12 labs into the building I didn't think much of it. like i came out and just went "oh, that's what was behind that inaccessable door."
I like to imagine the intro bit with the echoed sound effects and droning ambience is meant to represent JC just making it out of the MJ12 parts of the base, feeling like he can see the light at the end of the tunnel and he's gonna make it out of this. But then he exits the prison, and at 0:37 he sees the med bay and UNATCO signs and is like "...oh shit"
I couldn't bring myself to do it, to kill all my UNATCO Friends. Sure, they were working for a corrupted organization with an Iron Fist, but they were still my friends. The first guard charged at me and I panicked and gunned him down with an upgraded Assault Rifle... After that my guilt took over and I ordered Miguel to stay at the MJ12 entrance. I went on a Pepper Spary and Police Baton spree, I couldn't kill anymore of them. Screw Manderly, screw Navarre, and screw Simons. My hit-list is thin for this game. MJ12 is high on it, especially for making all my friends turn against me.
I kinda like that the name of the track can be understood on that many levels. like within UNATCO, within america, within every human ok ive got only 3 then what you buffoon challenge me creep
So genius. You could've think "hey nice hub area, will just come back to it after each mission and then onto the new one. Hey big door? Will surely go there later in the plot when my clearance is higher or something", and then... There's another game that reminds me of this, though while in Deus Ex you've already completed a decent amount of missions, walked-talked alot and everything, in that other game it was built up a lot less and coming back to the base is a lot different both in the timeline and the form. Spoiler Alpha Protocol, very underrated masterpiece imo, go play it.
alexander "siren" brandon was behind a lot of the soundtrack for unreal and deus ex, as well as a few other similar sounds. he's very much to thank for the atmosphere of unreal 98 and tournament 99 as well as deus ex.
