Imagine when writers try to come out with an absolute dystopia, and still fail to measure up with the real world we live in where now men can freely do whatever the hell they want in women's restrooms.
No music - "You are just an office worker." With music - "You are one of the UNATCO agents, currently stuck behind a desk filling those lame reports and waiting for your next mission"
The "Be Safe: Be Suspicious" public terminal message has stayed with me: "[...] How can you tell who might be a terrorist? Look for the following characteristics: [...] Argumentative, especially about politics or philosophy. [...]"
"How un-professional!" * stares with a frozen neutral face * "Expecting a show?" * checks the whole restroom for loot * "Don't think I won't report this!" * runs away to check in with Sam Carter *
@@durinV Number one: in 1945 corporations paid 50% of federal taxes. Now they pay about 5%. Number two: in 1900 90% of Americans were self-employed. Now it's about 2%.
I never took the oath in training how about this one? I swear I will not rest until UNATCO is free of you and the other crooked bureaucrats have perverted it's mission
I nearly shit my pants when Menderley said "Stay out of the ladies restroom. That type of activity embarrases the agency more than embarrases you" I never expected that type of a small detail in a game made in 2000. I wish i was born in the times where i could experience this masterpiece when it came out. Not when it goes on a sale on steam.
I was probably exactly the right age for this game to influence me, given I worked for FEMA for a couple of years and this game is literally the reason I was interested in that in the first place. My appointment did take longer than a week to finalize though.
Why is this game so legendary? I first played it in 2005 and ever since has been in the back of my head. I remember all the places, characters, sound effects, background songs... Why oh why is this game so hard to forget so i could enjoy the uniqueness of playing it the first time? I am sure you know the feeling of playing the game and then beating it. Puts a smile on your face but with a bit of sadness at the same time knowing it is over. I fucking love the whole series, even 2nd part, the graphics like shadows & lighting ... :) Replayed it last year with a mission to do a fast paced run through the story. I couldn't. Clock? 40 hours at the end. I still needed to search for all parts, locations, characters, side missions... just like the first time. You know what? The feeling was amazing and almost similar to the one when i played it for the first time when i used a dictionary next to a keyboard to understand some words. I was that commited to selecting the appropriate answer. Oh, the good old times. Happy that i discovered this gem on an abandoned CD by my brother who only did training mission and with all that scary sounds and bots and conversation system said this was a messed up game (rather hard game to understand at first) and left it at the side collecting dust over time. Until i found it in the ruins and my life was about to change completely. The rest is a history. *Thank You Warren Evan Spector and Co, i take my hat off to all of you who participated in creatng a masterpiece!*
It took me all this time to realise why this game is so memorable. Sure, it has fun and in-depth gameplay, a large world and an expansive story, but it did something not many other games did well; atmosphere. There's something about this game's music and sound design combined with the levels that gives you this strange feeling of awe and immersion.
It had so much more intelligence to it than the sequels (and hell, modern games in general). What game since has had an OPTIONAL conversation with a surveillance supercomputer that proclaims itself to be the next God humankind will worship? What game since has accurately predicted world political shifts? I feel like Half-Life, Deus Ex, System Shock...these were the games during the golden age of gaming. Then we moved onto the simplistic, lootbox infested rubbish we have today. Hopefully one day the smart ideas will reign supreme again.
Really nice hommage of you. I totally agree with all what you said. I think that the quick answer of the question is: (Why is this game so legendary?) Amazing ambiance, awesome soundtrack, terrific plot, unforgetable characters, fine gameplay, intelligent game design, and strong universe. In one word: It's a masterpiece! Period. (PS: I'm french so... excuse my french if my english is wrong!)
@@coltonbrantley7354 I'd argue this beats Half-Life. For one reason: The soundtrack. The HL soundtrack was nothing in comparison. Comparing the two, you could say they didn't even try in HL. Alexander Brandon just can't be beaten.
@@SamHammoudeh Yes, him too. I just knew the majority were done by Alex. He sure has some incredible talent too though. This song stood right along side Alex's compositions. And that's saying something.
SoaringTrumpet ‘Modern conspiracy nonsense’ yeah, not like there is a proven child trafficking ring in the highest echelons on power in governments across the world. You sound like a fool.
I love this track but recently I found out it's very similar to Global Communication's "7:39" (that's the name of the track, I'm not timestamping the video), which is a track from 1994.
The thing I like the most about this, and other Deus Ex music, is how well it's suited for a long and expansive game like DE. You're in these locations for a long time. A bombastic score with lots of horns and crescendo would become grating over time and just give the player a headache. This is muted and calm, while still present and unmistakable. This particular piece really matches well with the UNATCO setting, too.
Unatco Trooper : Coughs. Unatco Tropper : Hell of a first day. Unatco Trooper : Hello agent Denton. Unatco Trooper : Looks like the cleaner bots have been busy while I was away.
I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who remembers this fantastic & unique game. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who stood in UNATCO's base for hours just to listen to this soundtrack. Lastly, I'm glad that I'm not the only one still checking back and playing this tune in 2023 - it just makes one feel so much more advanced, so much more intelligent -- so much more AUGMENTED.
This game was so head of its time. Really wish someone would make a faithful remake. The newer Deux Ex`s are cool games but they lost the feel of the original. Mad props to the sound guys, pretty sure its the same group that worked on Unreal Tournament soundtracks too. Damn the comments are full of nostalgia!
Why do you need a remake? The game is on Steam and runs on any modern computer. Re-releases are for console games because they aren't backwards compatible.
I don’t know if they ever could capture the feel of this game again in our lifetimes. It was so of it’s time. Late 90s early 00s, millennium bug, conspiracy, America waking up to the true horrors of terrorism. It captured the feel of that era perfectly.
Working hybrid and walked around our 1 million sq ft campus listening to this. Makes the mundane work seem important. Versa Life campus is more analogous though vs UNATCO HQ. Those cubes and the workers saying "What", and there only being a few per floor.
01:04:31 3 different time formats, hour, minutes, seconds. 1 + 4 + 1 - 3 = 3 3 sides on a traingle. Two 0's look like eyes. Goddammit, I knew the Illuminati was real.
I used the electric prod on the guard behind the desk at the main door of the HQ, he was one of the few that didn't deserve to die on my escapade-rampage from majestic.
Those were different times, people expected different things from games. DX was - still is - so immersive! I remember playing it for the first time, entering UNATCO HQ - feeling that I've accomplished something with cleaning out the NSF on the island, and the locations really gave a vibe that this is a thought out functioning organisation. I still remember a real sense of betrayal after the airport, and urgency to leave. Really, no other game gave me so many feels. Playing DX: Revision was a bit of a prostetic solution to try to get that first playthrough feeling. It won't come back 100%, but it was still better than nothing.
last time i played this game all the way through (only once so far) it was in probably in the early to mid 2000s. Listening to this music, i swear, is going to get me to download the game again and play it once more! :)
Every single comment - you are all part of the deus ex team. For those that know, know. You will never ever feel this level of mystery and conspiracy in a game ever again. Not with a soundtrack like this !!!!!!! My brothers.
I love how when I look at the old or new comments: they are usually all just dialogue from the game. And I have no idea why I laugh so hard seeing it. And- for my own 2 cents: "A bomb."
I remember when i was a little kid playing this game, english is not my native language so pretty much the first level and the second i was able to beat as a kid. Later on when i got older in my mid 20s my cousin still had a copy of this game, and i have to say that Deus Ex was truly one of a kind experience. Fun times. Today we get so many crappy games actually lol
a lot of people seem to have played this game around 2000 or behind 2010, and im here that played it for the first time maybe 2 years ago. i didnt think id like it all, but to my surprise i loved it. i still love it today like i just found it for the first time. im just 17, this games older than i am! i love this game so goddann much oh my god.
If anyone is listening to this and somehow wants...more... I recommend Dreaming Cooper, particularly their album Mysterious Places. It channels this entire vibe in a way I can't fully describe
Man...after the masterful System Shock Remake. Imagine if Nightdive remake this and honestly after witnessing how downright accurate the System Shock Remake is,I feel they one of the few team that pull this out.
Right know, Nightdive is the only dev I would entrust with a remake for such masterpieces. SS: Remake is 10/10. Vicarious Visions are maybe the only other one but they got bought out by Blizzard, so they're with tied hands now and no more working on other IPs projects for them - sadly, such a waste of talents.
