This ending seems poetic, hmm? At the beginning of the game, two powerful men stood in this hallway, discussing their plans to rule the world. Now, after many long nights, their enemies are standing in the same hallway and are going over their own plans to rule the world. I shouldn't be too surprised if conversations between future rulers of Earth are happening now.

I interpreted this ending as Everett becoming Bob Page II, and JC becoming the new Walton Simons. They are in the same respective positions as Page and Simons were at the beginning of the game, in the same room, and the game ends on the same shot as it began. I always felt like the Dark Age option feels like a regression out of nostalgia, a method all too popular with humanity that never works in the long run and does more harm than good. Humanity's focus has always been progress and some people just want to see the world burn. What is to stop another Illuminati to be created from the 2nd Dark Ages? There will still be people who want power and realise it's best to play from behind the curtains. It would be like stopping halfway a chess game and reset the chessboard; the game may go differently than before, but the result will still be the same: one wins and one loses. Atleast, that's my opinion.

As much as I would prefer this ending to any other in the game, it's clear by all the elements in the cutscene that this is meant to be the evil ending. The narration gives you no certainties and altrough at first implies you are gonna pull humanity of "The Night", it ends being more allong the lines "yeah, we will lead humanity into The Day... eventually... at some point...". Also the ending quote of John Milton is just... evil when put in this context, and considering all the story writting in the game shows the creators are rather anarchist in their inclination, it's clear they would dislike this ending.

After seeing how Everett treats his friend Lucius DeBeers, I don't think this is a very good ending. Everett puts his own wants and needs ahead, even at the expense of others. The benevolent leader persona is just an act, his actions speak differently. Helios is the ending I chose, even though it results in dictatorship, at least Helios seems to be benevolent from how it started freeing up trade routes in Hong Kong.
@huge_letters

@solsmith7843
@solsmith7843 8 лет назад
Hence, why Helios had JC merge with him. Rather than simply ruling the world on his own, Helios understood that it needed (a good) human('s) perspective in addition to its own computing power and its physical capacity to facilitate the entire world. In effect, JC became its human conscience. It saw how terrible a person Bob Page was, hence why it didn't want to merge with Bob Page. It wanted to merge with JC because it deemed JC a good enough person (or at the very least, someone who would be more moral than Page).

I like this ending the best, its a complete wildcard. It can either end extremely well with a good JC, or be terrible with a bad JC. Everett is a total bastard, but a moral JC is already known to rebel against authority that he sees as unjust. I have a feeling that if Everett were to try to manipulate JC into returning the world to the status quo, he would end up with a bullet in his head like Simons. I dont know how long it would take for JC to catch onto it, but a good JC would likely be working to improve the lives of the common everyday people and wouldn't stand for whatever bullshit Everett thinks he's about to pull.
@Heartbreah13
@Heartbreah13 Год назад
Not necessarily. JC, moral or not, will end up being complicit with Everetts actions, and grow to accept them as the only way. Its not surprising that this ending mirrors the opening of the game, just with JC and Everett. Also, that paradise lost quote tells you everything you need to know.

If you listen to the music of the endings you will find the truth about which one is the best. Tong ending : happy music that end with the main theme its a restart where no one rules . Illuminaté ending: senister but gets cheerful at the end which means there might be hope. Helios ending : pure evil and dark , proof is how helios dominates humans in the end . Edit: but the best one and the most fitting despite me sliding and trusting tong ,has to be helios ending it fits the title of deus ex machina.

You're right. This resolution merely eliminates an inconvenient Page and reaffirms the status quo. Nothing changes. The Dark Age of autarkic mini-states is just a reboot that will eventually lead to larger nations and unions. People are driven to form alliances for mutual benefit, surely not every community can survive entirely on its own. What about international trade, defense, and such? What Helios proposes, if nothing else, is a unique opportunity to try something new.
@uppishcub1617
@uppishcub1617 5 месяцев назад
New doesn't necessarily mean good. There have been plenty of terrible new ideas throughout history. The other two solutions are purposely impermanent. They count of the constant cycle of human society, the dark age expects society to be rebuilt, at which point it will collapse again. The Illuminati expect people like Page to come along again, and they plan to deal with them just like they did with Page.
@SefniAsheforr
@SefniAsheforr 9 лет назад
This game is absolutely brilliant. All the choices they give you in the end are fucking genius. On top of them all fitting the tone perfectly. They are all very hard decisions with benefits and major drawbacks. Ethical drawbacks that really tore me apart my first time through. I chose Tong's dark age my first time through. Which at the time seemed the most ethical choice. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised it was wrong. On top of setting humanity back hundreds of years, it isn't any more totalitarian of a choice than the other two. You may not deem yourself worthy to rule like a passive agressive overlord by merging with Helios, or secretly controlling the world, dictating what you (and your co-conspirators) see as fit for the world, like the Illuminati ending. But you're still making a choice for mankind. You're not letting humanity make the choice to destroy and start over. You're doing it yourself because YOU think that is the right choice. But you're still choosing your will above the world's. So it's still just as ethically wrong as the other two. It's brilliant. At this point I always choose the Illuminati. It may seem to be wrong. But this way you and other people are trying to do what's best from behind the scenes. Merging with Helios is the most totalitarian. There are so many other factors that make it a huge risk and the complete antithesis of the people's will. None of the choices equal freedom. All of them are in the ethically gray area. But at least the Illuminati willl try to guide the world. They could try to seek out the will of the people and attempt to see it through. Perhaps you won't in the end, but at least you're giving humanity more of a chance than the other two. Dark age vs. cyber God's will are terrible choices in my opinoin after a lot of thinking. And that's what makes this so fucking brilliant. You really have to think. And you have to analyze every decision. And perhaps you'll regret the decision you made afterwards. It is so fantastic. Do we really have any games that make you think like this anymore? Any games that are this thought provoking? There are some that come close, but I don't think any have yet reached this point of refined brilliance. Mass Effect is actually my favorite game series of all time. And now that I think about it, it's almost like Bioware tried to make the ending of the trilogy like this. But I won't go into why that ending(there's really not a difference between the "multiple" endings") is nothing like this. Not a lot of variety, no real nuance that really makes the decision difficult and complicated. This is writing that makes modern Hollywood look retarded (not that it doesn't seem to be doing that on its' own now anyway). If any person says video games aren't art, or are drivel that will never reach the level of high art. Make them play Deus Ex. I'm sure they'll change their mind.

Glad that someone's a believer. "Deus Ex" changed my life in ways that I never thought possible. At first I lost sleep due to learning that the game's story seemed very real, but then I learned that the game also let players make choices on how the world must change, or remain the same in one case. At first I sided with Helios because that ending seemed easy to achieve, but even the simplest ending had meaning-JC merging with Helios to become a man-made God. Now I wonder what will happen if everyone ends up merging with Helios. If you want a detailed "Deus Ex" LP that also discusses science, philosophy, literature, and other conspiracies, try watching ThreadbareInc's "Deus Ex: The Lecture Series" on RU-vid. MelanicDisaster Completely agree with you. One of the things that I love about this game series is exactly how it tackles really interesting (and more relevant than ever in real life) philosophical topics such as the limits of freedom and political power within a hard sci fi context (many of the technologies and science breakthroughs presented in the games are actually starting to become a reality). In my first playthrough I choosed the Helios ending believing that it would be the best option for humankind (I didn't like the idea of devolving it centuries with Tong's solution and aiding the Illuminati seemed like repeating exactly the same mistakes that leaded to Page's reign of terror) but after thoroughly thinking about it I realized that it has controversial and uncomfortable repercussions, such as the absolute end of freedom due by the dependence on an all powerful AI with control of everything (the nearest thing to a "God" that could be created). None of the endings can be considered as "good", all have a really gray and bittersweet feel which I actually like, because in real life there are never absolutes. BTW, I also loved Mass Effect (including the 90% of 3) until that set of disastrous endings which seems as a very, very bad done and forced attempt to get the same effect of the DE ones.

Illuminati is the return to the status quo, the ending takes the place in the same room as the intro with JC and Everett standing in the same place as Simons and Page. The dark age is insane, it will be the return to the time before the internet, with a way easier way of spreading misinformation. Helios is a natural evolution, it's better for an AI and human hybrid which can understand the needs of the people and be objective to govern the world than people who can be easily blinded by ambition and other flaws, and to care only for themselves as we can see currently.

I like to think Everett and Dowd learned something from their fall and recovery and won't just resume MJ12's work, plus there's JC to act as a counterbalance and they owe their asses to him, particularly Dowd. Still, I'm sure they have ulterior motives and they'll still be dicks but things seem pretty optimistic and it's the ending that least screws normal people up, as they can just resume their normal lives. As for the Helios ending, I think the fact that Helios will be a benevolent dictator who might have absolute political control, but uses this to maximise the economic wealth and social oportunities for everyone else. JC is the only silver lining in this ending. Morgan Everett - through his actions - is a manipulator who does things that favor him the most. I'm only here because I always choose the HELIOS ending when I get to the end.
@Stalkerfan498
@Stalkerfan498 7 лет назад
Silver lining can be surprisingly effectual. JC (from my pov) seemed in this ending to be inclined to help Everett because of his skepticism in Helios, so he wants to resort to rule compassionately from the shadows. I'm not sure exactly how much and for how long JC would be fooled by Everett, but JC would have a very specific agenda that involves trying to improve the commoners' lives as much as possible. Wouldn't be shocked if eventually he and Everett came to a head on a couple of issues.

I finished Deus Ex for the first time last month and honestly out of all endings. I had to choose Helios. Keep in mind every ending was a risk (illuminati and helios could both be power hungry.. and tong's idea was bad because everything can just return as it was and not achieve anything.) Everett had good intentions yes... but in the ending when JC wanted to actually do something for the people. Everett was like, "our agencies will do the work while we kick up our feet in our own desk" but helios did action right away by restoring the trade routes in hong kong and shutting down government buildings BEFORE merging with JC. It's not about the illuminati being bad, but it's about them actually doing something that will count for the future. and if a dictator AI will help the world then it would be the best. And if Helios does become power hungry... they can just kill JC and destory the AI core in area 51. Whereas the illuminati would be much harder to destroy because nobody will know about it. and also the possibility of someone taking over illuminati for their own good like bob page.

+Gamble Animations Kill JC?...... Kill? JC?
@MithriAK
@MithriAK 8 лет назад
Exactly. It's in this ending specifically that shows that Morgan Everett is a master manipulator looking for his own ends. During the ending level, Morgan is completely appealing to JC's sense of power first then "Think of what we could do! kill bob page" then justice second by trying to convince him it would be good for humanity. Then the instant that the Illuminati is in power, Everett says "We only suggest. Insinuate." Well shit! That's something someone with a total lack of willpower would say if I ever heard one. There's no initiative towards making the world a better place but more of "influencing" it instead. This is why for the nth playthrough of Deus Ex, I'm still merging with HELIOS in the end.

This is one of my favorite things about Deus Ex. There is not 'correct' or 'wrong' choices in the endings. Every single one of them has pro's and con's that do not outweigh one another. Your choices will simply just be that; choices. You choose what course humanity takes, and it doesn't matter what happens, it is just how things will turn out. It is like watching an ant farm. It will be what it will be, good and bad mean nothing.

Honestly I think this is the "better" ending. Tong's solution is only temporary and in the long run lead to the same situation he was hoping to avoid. The Helios ending grants ultimate power to a machine which will always be abstracted from the world it runs. It would run into the same problem the Illuminati originally ran into, but remain in absolute control. This ending at least allows for structure even if it does have the potential to become corrupt. The key thing is it has flexibility.

Tony Chang The only ending I like is Helios. The others aren't solutions. The Illuminati ending is just Everett saying "even though this Illuminati thing went off the rails once, let's try it again". Tong wants you to basically hit the reset button and hope things turn out differently, but why would they. A benevolent dictator, one that can process more information than any human mind could, might actually work. If it's truly benevolent that is.
@tonyc.0451
@tonyc.0451 7 лет назад
I also chose the Helios ending in my first playthrough. Having an advanced AI program handle governmental functions worldwide seems to be a good idea, but Helios still scares me sometimes. Even Bobbin Threadbare's Deus Ex walkthrough pointed out that the Helios ending wasn't perfect.
@worsethanjoerogan8061
@worsethanjoerogan8061 7 лет назад
No it definitely wasn't perfect. I can understand people not trusting this weird AI, especially since it seems to evolve so fast. It went from two warring AIs merging into one, and then it immediately sought to modify itself again by merging with JC. So it's not exactly predictable. I can see why people would rather side with their fellow humans, with all their flaws. I still like the Helios one the best though because it's the only real game changer, the only "new solution" I guess. I'd never do the Illuminati ending, that's total hypocrisy and Everett cannot be trusted.

This ending would be the best if JC killed Morgan instead and ran the illuminati himself. Merging with a godlike AI would be extremely good or extremely bad, as you don't know it's true intentions and there's no way to back out of it. And Tong's ending is also too extreme. This ending makes the most sense, but only if he got rid of Morgan, because he clearly could not be trusted, if he was willing to betray his own mentor.

The Illuminati, in this game at least, is explicitly built up as not being evil and that their greatest failure was not containing the ambitions of some of their former members because their goal was always to push things in what they saw as the right direction from the shadows and let it unfold, while M12 just wanted absolute control over everything. They created a system that they thought would be able to keep one another in check, but it’s only become one big corrupt system. Where as the AI wanted to merge with JCs brain to figure out what was best for humanity. Maybe free will isn’t such a great thing after all. Could be because, at the final level of the game, multiple participants (including Tong, Paul, Savage, Page, Dowd, Helios and/or Everett) are all listening in and sending messages to JC's infolink, with at least one instance where Page responds to a comment Dowd makes about the "giddy" past coming back if the Illuminati come into power again).
