My review of the Deutsche Grammophon Original Source release of the Brahms Piano concert #2 Emil Gilels, Berliner Philharmoniker, Eugen Jochum.
I compare it with 7 other copies of the piece from my collection.

Love your reviews! You should have more subscribers. A fresh new wind in the vc community! Probably too critical for most but very honest!

Great video, thanks, especially for having the New Order Blue Monday 12” 45 rpm single as an example. My “two cents” is the Decca Smetana Ma Vlast Kubelik/VPO, the Ace of Diamonds pressing SDD161/162: the 5th track Tábor (13’10”) and 6th track Blanik (12’30”) each takes up one side of the 2nd record SDD162. The groove spreads, playing in 33 rpm are just incredible. Inevitably, they sound much better than the first 4 tracks, all cut on the first record SDD161.

@davidchan8108 I just ordered the Ace of Diamonds on Discogs, Probably the first time in my life I paid 20 bucks for a $5 record but it was the only one in the U.S. haha

@@FLOWERINGSPIKES Great and thanks for your support! Just hope you bought both SDD161/162, which are “loose change” of the 1st pressing Decca SXL2064/65. Just like what you said, this SDDs sound better. Also it will be a great shoot out against the upcoming DGG The Original Source reissue, also R Kubelik but conducting the BSO!

For me Richter / Leinsdorf is the best of all recordings

Very cool series of videos you've done on these. Also I love that you mentioned that New Order single, I'll have to hunt down. copy. I have it on the Substance 2xLP, but I doubt that has the deep bass you're described (I seem to remember it having a lot of mid bass, but still sounding good).

@poetryonplastic Hello! Nice to see you here! I'm also talking about the dance mix on the B side which is longer and is way more weightier than the original. I saw on IG you went to BD hifi, I was there like 2 days before you, you know there's like 20 more boxes of classical in the back he's going through. I'm gonna head back down in a couple weeks if you wanna meet up and go...email me Ofaire@gmail.com I'm doing a series now of best stores to find good clasical, I got some amazing stuff when I was there.

By far the best Brahms piano concertos on record are the Arrau/ Concertgebouw/ Haitink versions on Philips. Of course imho!

@hectorberlioz1449 I wii check them out, just looked them up and I love it when people recommend albums that I can buy for $5 each!

@@FLOWERINGSPIKES haha yes indeed, but try also Ashkenazy/Haitink with both the Concertgebouw and the VPO. These ones benefit above all from the excellent Decca engineering.

I agree with the DG Original Source being overblown on sound quality with their 4-track direct mixdown to lacquer. I will however still buy a few here and there for the performance. By the way, when you are out in the wild, look for Dutch-pressed Philips labels (red or blue). Most have excellent pressing and sound quality with under-appreciated conductors and orchestra.

@12vers Hello! I do have many, many Philips, in the video after this one I show some amazing Grumiaux. I also love many of the Haitink/ Concertgebouw, esp. the Bruckner cycle. Strange too that almost all the Philips in America I find are unplayed, like all the ECM I find are unplayed promo copies. A strange anomaly.

Suggest checking out Gina Bachauer/ Skrowaczewski/ LSO, Mercury Living Presence. Typical front row, near field listening experience, 35MM film recording by Robert/ Wilma Cozart Fine. Not too expensive and not difficult to find.

@davidchan8108 I've seen that record a few times at shops and I really am not familiar with her at all and I always passed on it!

The Bachauer is great. Though she tends to bang (but so did Howowitz :) My long time favorite is Solomon, Philharmonia Orchestra, Issay Dobrowen. Pity there is not more Dobrowen available. He lead the orchestra in the classic Chausson Poème with Ginette Neveu. @@FLOWERINGSPIKES

Good evaluation. You know what you are talking about. One note: do not waste good sleeves on lousy records. They are too expensive.
