This one hurts. It's heads up for a WSOP bracelet in the $25,000 Heads Up event. The opponent Chanracy Kuhn has been making some big laydowns, and an opportunity arises to make a big, but profitable, bluff. But sometimes even the best laid plans go awry. :(

I think he was just so flustered at that point he wasn’t even thinking clearly. He just said f it. If I’m right, good, if not, this is still my biggest cash ever and I lost to arguably the best heads up player ever. His actions leading up to this were telling. He put in wrong chips, he laid down some big hands that would have won the pot. The fact that it was 8/6 which had become a major hand between the two of them also played a role. But he was visibly and clearly flustered to the point where I believe he just made a decision he may not have made.

It was an ambitious call by Kuhun on the river. However, Doug's analysis is even more ambitious, because it is hard to believe that players may consider so many combos, blockers, and variations from preflop, to flop, to turn, and to river at every hand, before reaching a decision...!!!..If they are able and willing to do it every hand, they may end up in hospital before the tournament is over..!!!

Doug - Much respect. I have learned a ton from your analysis and enjoy your watching /hearing you insights! - But this time you mention that "Game Flow" from previous hands influence the play in this 'critical' hand... and did not mention that you had made a big deal about one of your previous bluffs getting thru. When you told your opponent that you got the bluff thru, I said "Wow, that guy will call the next time its a tough call, as he KNOWs that Doug has bluffed him..." and noone likes to get bluffed. My sense was he knew you were domminating him, and would rather go out calling a bluff, than being driven off a hand. In this case, I think most people saw you dominating the match, and if you had not told him thatyou had bluffed (in what seems a very believeable way), he may have been less likely to call, when it was a close call (like with 3rd pair). - 2nd place is an amazing accomplishment, (but 1st is more fun)! Great play and thanx for the videos!

I love how in poker you can not want card X in your hand on the turn so that you unblock your opponent semi-bluffing with an X, and then on the river you can want an X in your hand so that you block your opponent from having hit the draw. Seeing him flip over an 8 and a small club really would make me sad that I was now losing to someone who clearly wasn't playing optimally. But, to be fair, he seemed to count his chips and realise he's winning this hand or losing the match - which was probably spot on.

Q4, J4. T4, 84 are played this way by Doug, that's 64 combos, too bluffy imho. Maybe some randomization reduces the bluffs but I have a feeling Doug open ended + Doug haz no pair/Ace = Doug goes all in except Feb 29th between 7:32pm and 8:06pm.

Fantastic explanation of not only working out what to do with your own hand, what your opponent has, but also working out what your opponent thinks you have. I have to agree with the final conclusion that the most likely hand Doug would have would be a missed flush or straight draw, or both. In which case, it's a nailed on call. Would I have jammed on the river? Mostly because of the fact that Khun called the 900k turn, I think I'd have saved what I had and checked then been forced to fold to any bet on the river. Maybe that's because I'm a bit chicken when it comes to taking a 30/70 chance of winning the pot... but then I don't have the skill and knowledge that Doug has. Fascinating to watch and learn though. The turn call, to me was the giveaway. If Khun was on a draw of some kind, he'd probably have folded there. So, for me, I'd have bailed out on the river.
@BL-ze4wt
@BL-ze4wt Год назад
It isn’t about ‘most likely hand’ or ‘nailed on call’. He is more inclined to hero call because he thinks he is getting bullied, and there are tons of spots where bluffing doesnt require your whole stack and you can find those spots instead. Overall, when you are 2:1 chips and *presumably* better player - dont bluff your stack out thats the only way you loose

Doug I think your analysis is always great. However I do think you failed to account for one thing in your commentary on the river. Some of youd hands that were semi bluffs that check raised on the turn now have showdown value on the river. So Khun is thinking you would now check back with any 9X holdings as it is second pair. Also, although you personally wouldn’t check raise the turn with a hand that has a lot of equity but would still hate to face a shove, he does not know that about you. Most players DO check raise with combo draws on the turn with a disregard for the fact they might get jammed on and hate that spot. So Khun is thinking you do have a lot of missed straight draws that have turned a flush draw and have completely missed river. He does not know that you would just call the turn with a straight draw flush draw as most opponents (wrongly in your view) check raise the turn with those types of holdings.

I just don't like having the 4 on the river once he calls the turn. We block some hands that we fold out. I think we should have some give ups here as played. We don't always have to barrel when we check raise the turn. Also, the way Doug snap shoved the river when an obvious straight draw gets there is kind of fishy. If he just check folds theyll still be more hands to come with roughly the same stack. Just a brutal ICM punt imho.

It's really hard to criticize this hand. The only idea I had was to tank-shove river. This is anything but a punt.

Doug are you saying you didn’t make a mistake and if you played it again it would turn out the same way? Bluffing most of your chips with Q high and over cards on the board seems high risk in a tourney final…imo. the bet sizings looked all wrong to sell the bluff too. I think you got a little overconfident and maybe in a hurry to win and he read your bluff like a book.

@theowl3756 Год назад
It was an ambitious call by Kuhn on the river. However, Doug's analysis is even more ambitious, because it is hard to believe that every player considers every conceivable combos, blockers, and every variations from preflop, to flop, to turn, and to river at every hand, before reaching a decision...!!!..If they are able and willing to do it every hand, they may end up in hospital before the tournament is over..!!!
@mauer1
@mauer1 Год назад
i bet they can consider many variations throughtout the hands more than you maybe thinking. whats the biggest deal though is, even if they play mostly on instinct they have to sharpen their instinct with this analysing.
@chrisadmaley
@chrisadmaley Год назад
You vastly underestimate how pro poker players think then, they are thinking about all those things.
@Dreamagain11
@Dreamagain11 Год назад
The variables aren't even that hard to consider in this hand and you can just immediately start erasing large chunks of both players possible hands based on the limp and check preflop. "78 got there but I have 8 so that helps a little" isn't exactly superbrain thought process.
@theowl3756
@theowl3756 Год назад
@@chrisadmaley I would like to think you are correct. But in reality. it appears you are elevating a group of gamblers to the level of great scientists, which I think is overly optimistic. Even if such rare and exceptional individuals exist in poker, their number is very limited. Most great players have great instincts that is effective most of the time. The bigger issue is that if a poker player is using analytical skills that resembles Chess at highest level, such skill is only useful if the opponent is also playing Chess at highest level. The few hands shown in this video, indicates that Kuhn is not at that level. That's why Doug's long-winded description is not very helpful.
@chrisadmaley
@chrisadmaley Год назад
@@theowl3756 lol its not "great scientists"....the pros that play poker every day are very good a statistics and knowing the odds of a lot of different options. you can't play on instincts and last very long. They all play the odds. Thats how you make good calls vs bad calls..in the long run of playing you will win money is what they operate on.

"Hey doug" that is what i told you yesterday as i was walkin with my kid through bellagio... could see some frustration and concentration in you as you walked by. Was takin my daughter by the poker room so i could show her where her dad basically lived for years in the early 2000's. Will assume by this video title that's why you werent so happy as you walked by. Hope you feel better bro.

I have a question on calling river jam. >Doug shouldn’t JAM w missed clubs >Kuhn having the 6c is bad because it blocked missed clubs Which one is it?! If Doug isn’t supposed to jam missed clubs, the 6c is actually good for Kuhn… right?
@LukePettit
@LukePettit Год назад
Yes it's generally good for Kuhn to have a club on the river. In this case the club is a pair making it less relevant since pair plus FD don't raise turn and jam river.

This is a clasic problem, when you play good bluffing candidate vs your actual loose image, where your bluffs doesnt have same fold equity vs non gto players. I feel like i could save lot of money if i was able to shut down great bluffing hands depends on image.
