Shyam: Retelling the Bhagavata: Devdutt Pattanaik & Ira Mukhoty
Devdutt Pattanaik writes on the relevance of mythology in modern times, especially in areas of management, governance and leadership. He is the author of 30 books and 600 columns, including bestsellers such as My Gita, Jaya, Sita, Business Sutra and the 7 Secret Series. He was a speaker at TEDIndia 2009 and spoke on ‘Myths that Mystify, East versus West’. His TV shows include ‘Business Sutra’ on CNBC-TV18 and ‘Devlok’ on Epic TV.
Bestselling/ popular Books: Myth=Mithya: A Handbook of Hindu Mythology, Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of the Ramayana
Ira Mukhoty is the author of Heroines: Powerful Indian Women of Myth and History, and Daughters of the Sun: Empresses, Queens and Begums of the Mughal Empire. While living in Delhi, she developed an interest in the evolution of mythology and history and its relevance to the status of women in India. Mukhoty is particularly interested in the way history is manipulated to suit changing narratives and the need to present historical non-fiction in an accessible way. She is currently working on her third project, a biography of Akbar the Great.
Shyam: Retelling the Bhagavata
The Bhagavata is the third great Hindu epic after the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The story of Krishna, known as Shyam to those who find beauty, wisdom and love in his dusky complexion, it was composed in fragments over thousands of years, first as the Harivamsa, then as the Bhagavata Purana and finally in the passionate songs of poet-sages across different Indian languages. Devdutt Pattanaik, distinguished mythologist and mesmeric storyteller, guides us through the multiple layers of meaning and perception to the core of these enjoined narratives and the essential and abiding knowledge of Shyam.

Oh yeah, be taught to cultivate this piety of selflessness as pure love, especially by the guru or swami to a young woman inspired to go to India in the early 70s to seek spiritual awakening and enlightenment. India was my first experience of travelling from a safe and predictable environment to an exotic, mystical infinity where the gods were alive on every lips, in every story and every street. KI was completely mesmerized since my first evening on the big open roof terrace in Madras. There I watched amazed as the huge balls of an enormous full moon met vis-a-vis in the sky before my very eyes. India cast me in a magic spell. My existence beautifully connected to Namaste, Om, Shanti, meditation... Others were in India with their dreams, realities, hippies, love, relationship, money and going naked on Arjuna beach in Goa. For us young Malaysians, It was a big thing to travel to India in 1973... esp when I found myself travelling solo Things happened in India. That bright moonlit night ina cove somewhere on Calangut beach, a young Indian lad with shiny dark skin and enormous eyes called Vishnu joined Joseph, my English guide and protector. He spoke very well and the three of us talked long into the night...about our beliefs in social justice, racism, equality, pure love like the love tested on us by he gods. Joseph started to doze off... Vishnu suddenly asked me, "Will you kissy me?" I was shocked and didn't answer. Of course I couldn't kiss him. He began to complain he didn't believe in pure love, equality, antiracism etc making me feel very guilty, like a hypocrite. I struggled thinking I should kiss him as he's equal to Joseph nd I really believe in love and peace... that I spoke truly and I was not a hypocrite... but I couldn't. He mumbled something and walked off. That made me ponder about what I should have done... whatever, I was glad I stood my ground.

What if earnings are poor,then also upbringing of children will be bad.duryodhan was a pampered child of drithrasthra and his wife. Drithrashtra himself was playing nepotism to ensure that Duryodhana became the king and not the pandavas. He was envious of Pandu. Dhrithrashtra tried to kill Bhima under the pretext of embracing him,but krsna put a putla in front of him which got smashed.

Devdutt : Krishna didn't say it. A poet said it. Me : !!? Doesn't our understanding of Krishna, also come from a poet. My version of Krishna is the Krishna, the rest is just poetry.
@vishalahuja2136
@vishalahuja2136 Год назад
when he(Devdutt) said that the poet said it, he implied( without disrespecting) that, if poet approaches life with assumption of ahankara in the heart, then he will focus on comparisons. Hence, that's the poet bias behind the story of comparison. So Hari singh dinkar, the poet, is not the yogi. That does not mean he is bad or good person. It just implies that he has his own world view. While the bhagwata purana was composed by Ved vyasa and his disciples. They led the life of household and also that of yogi. Spirituality/life of yogi is opposite of materialism. It teaches you what is beyond hunger and insecurity, product of which includes ahankara. Idea of krushna is the idea of ved vyas. The concept of God as krushna, postulated through the lens of ved vyas. If krushna is purna purusha, the complete whole, then nobody is to be compared with, hence atma gyaan becomes the area of focus, rather than ahankara.

@vishalahuja2136
@vishalahuja2136 Год назад
we have a proof of mohammed also. but can we prove that he was prophet? Mythology is inspired from reality but it does not reflect reality/history in the form of hard facts in the complete sense. For example the mahabharata war lasted for 18 days ( 1+8=9). kauravas had 11 troops while pandavas had 7(spiritual no.) troops. total =11+7=18 (again divisble by 9). In the geeta, human is described to have nava dwara (9 doors). Dont u think that above data represents more of a metaphor than hard facts. Its a beautiful poetry, so pls dont pollute with argument whether its history or not.

@@sk-pg8zd krishna means kala/dark. In dwapara yuga, people became corrupt and abuse/misuse Rules. Also it might imply, God can even exist in dark-complexed people. @@vishalahuja2136 Vishal bhai, you are questioning if Mohammad was a prophet. Hinduism claims Sri Ram and Krishna were avatars of Vishnu without presenting any evidence in the last 5000+ years. Why? Is it a FALSE CLAIM? Hinduism claims to believe and follow "Ahinsha parmo dharma while worshiping KATILS like Sri Ram, Krishna, and Shiva. Ramayan narrates that Sri Ram, in rage and revenge, murdered Ravan and Khumbhkaran for Sita haran with the help of a monkey, Hanuman, that failed to pluck out a Sanjivini booty from Dorangiri parvat, yet the monkey broke apart the parvat. LOL. Monkeys, including Hanuman, evolved with a tail and NO wings necessary to fly; still, Ramayan narrated that Hanuman flew across Bharat carrying the parvat to light a fire with its flaming tail to Lanka to burn the inhabitants to death for KATIL Ram, thus committing the world's first genocide.

@@SnehaGupta-tj7by nope. Krishna was the king of Dwarka(a city made and destroyed by devas). In Jain mythology he was a vasudeva and vasudevas are king of 3 khanda( chakrawarthis are king of 12 khanda) where as their elder half brother are called Baldeva, so Balram were a Baldeva and Baldevas are non violent. Same in case of Ramayana, Lakshman were a vasudeva and Ram were a Baldeva. If there was too many gods, human would have been in different shapes as per their personal choice, but we human is in shape, why? When we make something like house or vehicles all engineers make it differently rather than making one model, the same model, why? So I mean to say that if there were too many gods, they would have been made this world differently in different shapes, but not happened like that, because we all have one God like us in our shapes. Laxmi is having many hands, Kali is having many hands and heads. Shiva is having snakes on his neck, but we do not keep snakes in our home, why? Hanuman is a monkey shaped. Anyone today believe that he was able to speak with his god Ram? 10 Headed gods, Sun god, Moon god, snake god, Cow god, Animal gods, Calf god. All these are gods and goddess of human? Para does not mean the other. It means beyond the mind and body.when u go beyond the mind body,you identify with your atma as Self and not identify with mind body. That is Atmagyan. Atmagyan separates the real from the relative.in the relative world there is karma, there is right and wrong,action and reaction, raag and dwesh, all duality.an atmagyani lives in the relative without being involved in it, meaning he watches himself in the third person. The panda va are the five senses, dhravpati is the prakruti( physical body) and Krishna is the Atma.

Why Krishna was dead? Where he is now existed? Or Krishna permanently dead? Which holy book of Hinduism authentic? Is the creation was explained in it? What about the first human? Of course population was gradually increased in the world, everyone knows. Then who were the first parent? How was the chronicle of generations explained in Hindu Holy Book? Is there any mention of the rain and rainbow? How it mentioned about the animals and vegetation? Why Hinduism not spread in the world first before Christianity? Why all the inventions made by Jews and Christians and why not Hindus and Muslims? Every thing that we use today invented by Jews or Christians. Is it true? Then why so? Hindu gods are not knowledgeable? Do you believe Shiva is the Pharaoh who loved snakes? His figure and photos are depicted as a snake, His headscarf depicts as the head of a snake, chin as the body of a snake. His hair on his head depicts a whole snake, Bunch of his head hair that pandits today keep on their head, what it means other than a snake? Pharaoh was a pandit as today’s Pandits who perform Pooja and rituals like Pharaoh did in Mishr (Egypt) in front of a statue god, Sun god and other creation of this world. Pharaoh fought war on chariots like Krishna and Pandavas that resembles in Mahabharata war. I have so many such questions.

When u get para Gyan, you get Atmagyan.atmagyan is realisation of true Self.The absolute Truth is the real and the worldly truth is the relative.In the relative world,we have action and reaction, karma, right wrong.etc.In the real, there is no judgement, just pure bliss.Patnayak is viewing our scriptures from an intellectual perspective, but they can only be truly explained by a self realised guru

if u say it as a religion, still there is a problem.. Becoz religion is a middle-eastern and western phenomenon.

Dev Dutt Patnaik is one of the biggest frauds.He has no clue of Bharath’s puranas, and no knowledge of Sanskrit. Pathetic he is treated as an ‘expert’.

Mr.देवदत्त पट्टनायक, मुझे समझ नही आ रहा है की आप पर हंस पडू या कुछ और करूं 😂. It's your interpretation which doesn't mean acceptable by all, especially those who are really scolars & knowledgeable. You are just a story teller of modern times. I really laughed on you listening your interpretation on Yashoda & Radha which came from Yashodhara. Your fame doesn't mean that you are always correct and on the name of freedom of speech you are saying unacceptable things & corrupting the youth minds.
