The finger next to the pinkie is the RING FINGER. Thumb, index, middle, ring, and pinkie.

In french it is "annulaire" because of "anneau" who means ring.

Great video. I have a buddy who swears against using a metronome because he says it develops you into playing like a robot. Needless to say he has poor timing.

I like that you mentioned that you have to "pop" the valves even in slower ballad tempo type music, it's a good habit.

Tito, yet another excellent video. chromatics are very useful and your comment about "doing it clean" is spot on. So many players play them unevenly. Severinsen used to advocate "Bang the valves down.' Same kind of idea. Another aspect of 'finger dexterity' is the equivalent of 'tongue tied' - you know -those awkward fingering combinations (usually with a 3rd valve in the mix.) if/when I run into those, I use my LEFT HAND to slowly work through the fingering, and then go back to the right hand. That works for me. My .02 Thanks again

I like Clark studies 1 and 2 along with the etudes. I have also used the dimes and make custom etudes based on studies 1 and 2 combined.

My first professor, Chris Carrillo, had me do an exercise with dimes on top of the buttons (between the tips of your fingers and the buttons), and playing Clarke 2's without dropping the dimes.

NOOOOO !!! Not the metronome!!! LOL. Just kidding. Thank you for this video and advice. (excellent as always, my friend!) When I'm playing chromatic scales or 16th note runs it can often sound a little muddy. Maybe I'm not popping valves as much as I think I am? Could it be that I'm not using good horizontal airflow? Hmmmm. Thoughts to ponder. Anyway, thank you for this video. I love everything you said - well, except for the metronome thing. Ha ha ha.

I do exactly the same stuff. Always nice to have your biases confirmed. 😂 HL Clarke added a repetition to that etude. Its a nightmare trying to play it repeated in one breath

I moved away from practicing Clarke 1 regularly a couple of years ago but guess what? I can't play the two lower register versions at dotted half note = 84 damn it! Guess what I'll be practicing for the next month. Thanks as usual Tito.

What horn do you play. It looks like the Adams A4.

Yup, an Adams A4LT lightweight model, but customized with the larger 5.5” bell that comes with the regular A4 model. A normal A4LT has a slightly smaller bell. It sounds like a heavier horn but plays like a lightweight horn.
