With the video playback speed setting we can choose these tempos for the 5 minute exercise: 0,25x 30bpm 0,5x 60bpm 0,75x 90bpm Normal 120bpm 1,25x 150bpm 1,5x 180bpm 1,75x 210bpm 2,0x 240bpm Great stuff!
I started playing when I was 14 or 15? Took a couple of crap lessons here and there, and I have played, terribly, for many, many....many, many years. Now, at 49, I am trying to learn rudiments for the first time...I'm trying to set up my gear better....I'm trying to put focus back into this, and correct a bunch of old bad habits. It's not like starting from scratch, because I've had sticks in my hands for a long time...but, I was not doing them any justice, and my whole world was RLRLRLRL I'm not necessarily staring from scratch, but, at times, it does feel that way. I've watched several of your videos, and your exercises really do help. There's an added dimension above the knowledge, and it is in the delivery. Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to put these video exercises together, and sharing a really smooth, and genuine teaching vibe. I've been a flight instructor for 20 years, so I can relate to the teaching thing, and what I've learned is that it doesn't matter what you teach, if you love to teach. I feel like you genuinely want me to be a better, and more complete drummer, and I don't even freaking know you. LOL. That's awesome! Thanks again for the free help! #olddognewsticks
I’m 51, haven’t had a set since I was 17 so yeah I’m gonna d9 the exercises ,, crazy rust ,,and tendon and a finer that does bend much lol good luck ,,I had to change my grip in left hand,,broke middle finger ,, shoulder surgery,,back surgery hip, lknee ,,,I will be better then before and I was good
I just played along to my favorite albums (self taught) my whole adolescent years.. I finally sat down and learned to play rudiments and work on groove in my late 30s. I wish I had Beatdown Browns channel many years ago.
I've watched and practiced an insane amount of online lessons. This is the lesson that really did it for me. Great teacher, great person, the best lesson I've ever come across. Thank you.
As a former drum corps snare drummer, I wish I'd had this lesson when I first started to play a lot of set. different application; different feel. "Flow" was something I definitely had to develop. This exercise would have immediately built it in. Your lessons are always thoughtful and creative, and you know how to help people learn to PLAY musically. Your communication skills are off the charts. You are the BEST on the internet, man. Thanks!
salut ,Rod i am an old french man about seventy i am happy that peoples like you give the real way of drumming perhaps we will meet in another life continue john
I've been "messing around " for more years than I am willing to admit. That is because I've found that I haven't mastered some very basic stuff. Beatdown's instructions have given me much to work on. His simple, straight forward approach had been great 👍. Good teacher. Best I've found! Thanks Rob!
Fantastic !!! Thank You so much, Rob. And there is one more thing, I always forget telling You: We foreigners are able to understand every word You´re saying, because You´re talking so clearly and understandable. Many greetings from Germany.
This video should win a grammy itself man! Its helping me become comfortable with my kit ..FINALLY!!!! ❤ 🥁 "and the drummer/drum instructor of the century award goes to...Rob BEATDOWN Brown!!!!🎉 thank you my dude..thank you 🙏🏽 🤘🏽🥁
What’s is up my brother? I have been questioning my flow lately and then you release this exercise. Reason why my flow had been lagging, is that I have learned so much from you, that I seem to want to play everything every time. Here lately I have no rhyme or reason and no flow. You just opened my eyes once again to using a simplistic pattern, with dynamic feel to allow and instill a natural rhythm. Rob your the best my brother! I will update you in 2 weeks on my progress. Have a wonderful day!🤜
What a great workout! One thing I really really like in your videos -> you "practice" together with us, it encourages us to keep going. At the end I did 30 min. of workout instead of 5 and I already could see some improvement! Thanks Rob!! 😊🤙🏻
"FLOW" is essential to the success of all drummers wishing to progress to newer rhythmic levels with finesse and ultimate forms of co-ordination around the drum kit. I appreciate the time and effort you have put into helping others reach these important musical goals. In this same regard, over the last few months, I have complied over 1400 brand new stickings & rudimental concepts focused primarily on hand to hand and drum set applications all with the primary purpose and intention of creating and increasing the levels of "FLOW" from hand to hand and from drum to drum for the progressive players and for all motivated & committed students of the drums. That's over 200 pages of individually unique & extremely creative one bar, two bar & four bar exercises which are all designed to bring out a deeper sense of musicality in each player who is willing to confront and patiently learn to perform each unique pattern. Each pattern is specially designed to be musical whether played slowly, at medium speeds or fast and... many are designed to enable you to reach incredibly fast levels of play with total precision, dynamics and sound clarity. Thanks for being a continuing inspiration to all curious & motivated drum students. Your dedication to teaching is a true blessing to all who want to learn new concepts.
Rob, I lost interest in playing during COVID because of too many unsettled issues - loss of job, relocation, etc. Now, things have fallen back into place and ’m re-energized and eager to get back into it. I bought a Roland VAD503 e-kit to allow me to play quietly/more frequently and I was just giving thought to the best way to start rebuilding my technique when I saw this video. This is just what I needed. I’m looking forward to getting it as smooth as you have. Thanks for sharing!
I have been working to increase speed of fills and felt too tense and not getting faster---checked out several videos re:flow. This is a great lesson and I will be returning to it---I have not been able to complete part 2 yet-----go slow, improve flow, increase tempo--my current mantra. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Dude!. I have been working with this very exercise for the last 3 days. It has helped tremendously with orientation and muscle memory of my kit. Today is the first time I could make it past 4 minutes. Hands are a bit tense but i never work em like this. Also thanks for the reviews on the KZ ears. Cant wait to get mine. They will be my first set ever. Thanks again for what you do and continue to do. All the way from ocean city md, thanks man!
What a cool smooth lesson. I get tired of these in your face guys having to be over the top for likes. This is a chill lesson. Relaxed. I learned a lot. Nicely done. Appreciate the download
You're the only guy that I press like before I've even watched the video for because you've never failed to make me a better drummer. Thanks for the great lessons Rob 🙌
I play a "kinda" fast genre of metal. Not extreme but hovering between 190 and 220 bpm. I can't preach enough how much this type of exercise, especially played at slower tempos, helps my playing. If you put a spy camera in my rehearsal room for the last year, you'd rarely see me play anything faster than 140-160 bpm when I'm practicing and I spend most of my time in the 80-120 range. This gives my brain a chance to focus on breathing, relaxation, control, proper motion, dynamics, etc. And all that has been carrying over and seeping into my actual band rehearsals where I've gone from needing a breather after three songs to playing our whole set, taking a break and playing it again.
Super Thanks Indeed! Ron this lesson completely rounds out so many facets to my playing. I am 59 and have been paying since 11 and man this was challenging to get down at first but man I am on this everyday to keep the discipline this takes to take it to the next level. Always struggled with off beat independence on the bass drum but man even this keeping the one bass note perfectly timed. Got it at 120 BTM but had some kick misses so that’s my challenge but sticking was solid. Also working in the same off beat hi hats or double triple on the bass drum will only add more musicality to the entire development. This is day one of trying this exercise but truly this will be my go too on a daily basis. I have watched probably 50 of your videos so far and man I am just so thrilled to the progress. Man just a joy to have landed on system. Thank you!
I just love this explanation. it makes drumming accessible to all levels. New comers and old guards can learn something new or learn to approach it in a different way. whether you are in a band or hitting pots and pans until you finally have a few bucks to spare for your first kit. This video makes me feel part of a community
I've enjoyed and gotten a lot out of a lot of Rob's videos recently. This one may be my favorite so far. After the first time I worked on it, I felt generally better on the kit already. And the coaching on how to approach it and execute captures a lot of wisdom.
Killer lesson, man. I started doing this when you first posted it and was maxing out at 100 bpm's. I'm now able to play cleanly at 120 bpm's! Thank you!
Dude, that is a sweet lesson! I got into your videos the other day when I searched for help with my double stroke roll (which was a good lesson too btw). I watched this video about 30 mins ago and since then got the excercise down at 60bpm for a few continuous minutes, then successfully played it at 70, 80 and 90bpm for a few continuious minutes! Which is awesome cuz it's hard for me to accomplish that! It's only 9am so I have to play quiet not to bother my neighbors, which made the lesson even better for me. Gonna take a break for a few mins and let it sink in and come back to it and get it up to 120bpm and then work on the 1 to 10 range. It's a strange feeling 3 or 4 mins into the excercise - as you get further along in the groove, things seems to slow down and one can really pay attention to the dynamics and accents, almost like it's moving in slow motion. Then I really have to listen for the metronome so I don't speed up, which I tend to do. This excercise is perfect for me to hold a tempo over a period of time when I deviate from the groove to a drum fill, which is prob my biggest struggle. So this really accomplishes a lot by working on holding tempo and a fill pattern for 5 mins! Great idea man! Diggin your style!
As a drummer I just have to say that I absolutely love your groove and your technique. Not aimed towards this video but your channel in general, you are an amazing drummer. Hats off my man.
Hey Rob. Your teaching is so simple and effective. I have picked up the 10 Beginners levels that you have taught on a different video. I have also learnt the Fills on the 5 Fills Video on your RU-vid channel. I am currently learning Rolls and was wondering how to bring smooth flow in my rolls wherein I move around on the kit. This video will be of immense help to me. Thank you very much. You are indeed a legend. God Bless you.
44 just started drums a couple weeks ago. I'm obviously not at this level yet but it's really good to see how to work on technique and what I have to look forward to.
Best drum channel on youtube - all of your practice exercises have elevated my playing - they're super effective, well thought out, and purposeful. Can't wait to try this one! Thanks!
What an amazing lesson ! I am using my hi hat to keep time and also have added an exercise starting left handed and reversed the direction that my hands travel. In other words just the mirror opposite. Thanks Rob your a great teacher and smooth as glass with your flow.
Wow! I have been watching your channel for the last 3-4 years, but I haven't seen this lesson so far. This goes directly to my bookmarks. This is pure Kung fu, man🙂
Little tip of you like I get so relaxed doing these kinds of exercises sticks want to come out of my hand on my left because of traditional grip found a great product called Gorilla Snot it's a green paste that sound gross but smells like pine I put just a tiny dab on my sticks and roll them between my hands to distribute the stuff and I'm free as a bird haven't lost a stick or had one move since Thanks Rob love your stuff 👊
Love the part how you made it for people with 5 & 4 piece sets and explained how to do it for each. :) . I do have the 5 piece but I do know how it feels :).
Rob, I appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into your videos. I just started playing two months ago and you are helping me get through this long covid winter we’re having. It took me over a week to earn your thumbs up at the end of the five minute drill I do appreciate the personal touch. it motivates me to try a little harder so thank you. David
Hey Sir Rob Brown! There's nothing i can say that hasn't already been said. I think i can speak on everyone's behalf here and say you're an inspiration to us all and the best damn drum teacher we could ever have hoped for, so thankYOU. I don't get much time to practice these days but this is definitely next on my list of things to accomplish on the drums!
Another cool derivative is to advance to the next mid-tom and descend to the lowest floor tom every other round...for those with the bigger kits, adds to the overall exercise and full dimension of the kit...👍🏻
Hi Rob Brown. Cheers from Denmark. Cool to follow your superfine videos - lots of great stuff to learn here, and a tip-top & "Beat-down to Earth" attitude you have. Thanks a lot, man :)
Great exercise and just what I needed. Working on stick/kick coordination and this exercise is is simple, straight-forward stuff that develops everything I am trying to do on my kit. Thanks!
Just getting to this ...initiation…. to ENDURANCE and yes sir...Flow. Great stuff. Now...Rob...I have a tendency the run the Bass on 4/4. Changes the workout...and the dynamics. Add the H-H on 1 and 3 and we're cookin'. :-)
