After almost 40 years of not playing drums and trying again my wife bought me a beautiful gretsch set for my birthday it's like starting over again it's not like getting on a bike and riding after you than off a bike for some years. Rob has the discipline and determination to help everybody who wants to play this instrument I Am very grateful to him and thank him and will continue watching him for inspiration and help Because as you get older you're not as agile as you used to be. I'm in my sixties and I want to play drums again and I am not going to let anything get in my way Thanks Rob

Now, what I did with the first half (single strokes) of the exercise is I broke it down to 4 parts: 1 measure of single strokes 1 measure of double strokes 1 measure of single strokes 1 measure of inverted double strokes... Then to the pattern. Again, props to you BeatDown Brown! From Palawan DrumLab, Philippines!

Rob, I’ve been watching your videos for about a couple of years now, you personally taught me to tune my drums easily to even getting that maximum thumpification out of my bass. It’s ironic because I just received my practice pad early this week and been using it daily. I will commit to these 3 rudiments even after mastering them. While you were showing us these 3 important rudiments I was thinking how great it would be to incorporate them around the kit. I know you’ve done videos on rudiments before but this one rocks. Thank you.

After playing congas and working as a percussionist for over 45 years, I took up kit at the age of 60. My weakness is developing a consistent practice schedule. I have a Roland KV kit in my apartment, and a DW setup at a friends (bassist) house. My timing is good, and I can "groove", but I'm struggling to get my rudiments and fundamentals down with as much intensity as I bring to my congas. My main struggle, beyond the fundamentals, is dealing with feeling "too old". Just turned 66 yesterday. I used to play all over the world (congas, African Dance), and I let myself slip into inactivity when I was working full time. No sob story here, just being honest. I love music, and I've found out that life isn't the same without it. Thank you Rob for sharing your knowledge and fire with us. And it's inspiring to see so many learning from what you bring. I'm determined to do the same.

Seeing somebody learning something new at 60ish it's amazing to me. I am a beginner aswell but I am 20 lmao. From what I have learned a very big part of learning it's "mental". I could pretend to fell as you but I really can't. Just consider 50% is work 50% is mental. You can do this keep growing musically live is too short to fell old. Keep it up :)

I have a similar one that I play when warming up. 8 note pattern RllRllrrLrrLrrll Rob, one thing I'd like add as a suggestion to all who watched this video, these patterns you just showed us could also be played with feet. Maybe even at the same time as hands, in unison or with right hand lead and left foot lead for a challenge

I do something similar. The rudiment on my hands while playing it half time with my feet. Rlrl rlrl (as 16ths) along with r l r l(as1/8ths). I straighten out to just a half time rlrl when playing the syncopated part. This is fun once you get to the paradiddles!
@davidlean1060
@davidlean1060 4 года назад
@Cheryl Graham Basically, take the first 5 exrecises in Stick control (includes single stroke right and then left lead and the the same with double strokes). When playing the right lead double stroke ie rr ll, play a rr ll half time with the feet. Basically, it is a variation on simon Phillips exercise where he plays a paradiddle in his hands and plays one half time with his feet at the same time. Change to a regular rl with the feet when playing the syncopated bit. I always like to use my feet while exerciseing my hands, so I am always looking for easy ways to keep them occupied while I practice my rudimants with my hands.

Being a physical therapist and a drummer , I love that you are talking about posture. During your rudiments, try not to keep the forward head posture for too long looking down at the snare drum. This will strain the back of your neck and cause you to slump sit and strain your low back. Use your peripheral vision and tuck your chin to look at your hands. Thanks for all your hard work and education, keep it it up.

What you do, Rob, and maybe subconsciously, is play lightly, and close to the pad, which is very beneficial. For me, I think focusing on light touch with whatever sticking pattern, and staying just above the head, aids greatly in stick control. You're a good soul big guy, and a hell of a player. Thank you for taking the time that you do.

There's two things I would add to this: 1) if you're having trouble with the inverted double stroke roll (RLLR), I would do the second variation with a straightforward double stroke roll (RRLL). This will help build the fundamentals of doubles without getting tripped up on the weird off beat nature of the inverted roll. 2) play each exercise starting on the right hand AND on the left hand. This will help balance the hands, especially on the first two variations where you don't get any left hand leading in. You can probably skip this step on the third variation because paradiddles naturally switch hands, but there's no harm in doing it for consistency. Other than that, it's a really good fundamental exercise that you could play at any point in your career as a drummer and still get something out of it.

Love your stuff. Any chance you can do something on counting - not the same as timekeeping per se, but simply counting in your head while playing, as the 'noise' can get loud in my head. In particular, between 4-and & 1 I sometimes lose it, particularly with a fill. And yet this is where groove starts. My favourite drummer is Simon Phillips (Rob, you're no.1 educator by far) , who if you watch closely is always counting, and when it's 33/8 you know it's a skill that needs nailing.

Great lesson. I'll have some of that for my first approach to drums this year. I mainly play guitar but this is so helpful. Cheers Rob.

Man I'm digging this exercise!! Only a week in and I feel my coordination, speed, and dynamics improving. I'm incorporating this daily as part of my overall hand development working on doubles, singles, and diddles. Obsessed with my hands.

For me, Rob, regarding the first exercise, is keeping the doubles low and even, especially where you alternate with the paradiddle to get to the other hand. Thanks, so much for putting the time in that you do for all of us.

Played guitar for 35 years, picking up drums at 51! Well, played concert snare in grade school but that was a long, long time ago. I honestly thought the rudiments would come back to me. Wrong. Thank you for this channel, it’s been a huge help!

That is a fantastic rudiments practice exercise, I like it sound and beats, I don't owe any drum sets, but I love to learn how to play drum, I have to start practice on pad and build some coordinate and technique for start, this sound has a great vibe to it...I'm Dig it!

Continued This For about a Year Now. My Hand Speed and Control Have Changed. With a Little Bit Of Research I've Learned I PLAYED WRONG THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL! Coming Back To This Video With Good Technique Is Changing My Stroke COMPLETELY! My Sound Is Better, My b.p.m. is UP Significantly. My control on the kit along with fills across all genres have improved! Thank You Dr. Beatdown!

I love this combo. I have been doing Rob-a-diddles non stop for two weeks, on my practice pad, steering wheel, desk. It’s fun on the kit to, using the bass drum as the metronome, playing it around the toms and snare, or playing metronome on Hi-hat, and Robadiddle on snare and kick

Thank you so much for this Rob. I'm just learning and got myself sticks and practice pad to develop my hands and sticking, get my brain working right before I even sit at a kit. I can already feel how much this is going to help because I know what I need to do, but my brain isn't working right yet.

Thanks for this, Rob. One of my goals for this year is to become a better drummer. Part of my plan to execute this goal is to commit to a daily rudiment routine, which I've never really done. I followed your advice from your previous video to focus solely on the single, double, and paradiddle. But I've struggled to put any real structure around it and I need something to keep it interesting. Hopefully, this does the trick. Just curious, what metronome app are you using?

This is sooo difficult! I can do this exercise when I'm just listening to the click... But as soon as I'm counting out loud or following the click with my feet its becomes impossible.

Thanks, bro. I grew up on the drumline and I remember everyone wanted to be a drummer. They thought it was easy. And as we got older, I had all kinds of friends who grew up playing wind instruments who got themselves a kit and tried to become drummers. They thought their musical knowledge translated. It would be like me picking up a trumpet and knowing the fingerings of notes without developing the chops of your lips. You can't. All those hours and hours playing rudiments made you crazy as a youngster but you develop stick control and that is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT skill a drummer has to have. And as you said in the video, you literally can build any grove up from just those 3 rudiments (singles, doubles, paradiddles). If you want to become a better drummer you only need four things. Sticks, a practice pad, a metronome, and a copy of "Stick Control". Run the drills till you can't anymore. Then do them again. Keep up the great work. And thanks for being an educator first. The kids see a "cool guy" like you and they think "I wanna play like Rob". It's extremely helpful to young drummers to hear an awesome drummer with great skills tell young drummers "You have to spend hours and hours running fundamentals and rudiments if you want to get better".
