Absolutely. We're at a point in time where a significant amount of people who shaped the entire medium are still around to talk about it. It won't be that way forever.
Aw man. You said Chris Avellone and immediately reminded me of the crap that poor guy had to go through. I feel so sorry for him. Genuinely seems like a good guy. He didn't deserve that. But on South Park Stick of Truth, I think the final product was amazing. It was a SP version of Paper Mario TTYD. My only complaint was how incredibly short the game is.
What’s even sadder is despite him clearing his name, he will probably never get rid of that stigma. Either people won’t know he cleared his name, don’t believe it, or won’t associate with him out of fear. Those women who falsely accused him should be in prison right now. If you falsely accuse someone of sexual harassment or assault, you should be given the same penalty that the person would get if the accused was charged. Also sad how Techland completely threw away the story he wrote for Dying Light 2 because of the bullshit accusations
I personally liked the short length of Stick of Truth because it never overstayed its welcome, had it been much longer in runtime I definitely feel like it would have become tedious and grating near the end.
Your videos cheer me up, no end. They make me think about a lot of things; life choices, appetite for risk, personal goals. I just can't comprehend how anyone can decide "well, I'm moving to Seattle". I can barely decide what I'm having for lunch and here's someone who will move around the country and juggle multiple projects. It's amazing how determined you are, how intelligent and personable you are in your videos. You're a real community treasure. Thank you.
I knew that South Park the Stick of Truth was made by obsidian and I loved it because of that, however I had no idea YOU were apart of this game! This means that this was my first game I played of yours way before I played fallout. I absolutely love this game and now I know why. I absolutely love fallout, fallout new vegas, and this game and its cool to see same faces in these projects.
The stick of truth is such an underrated game, I remember trying it out one time thinking it was just going to be some silly little minigame to help promote the tv show but ended up sinking hours and hours into it.
argh, release the Stick of Truth cut content as a DLC or bonus or a youtube video, it can't just remain unseen from another video: "eventually a bunch of content was cut from the game this included a battle with vampire kids a quest to save Carmen's doll from the gingers a whole Christmas town and a huge underground world where gnomes and crab people lived"
Really a fun game! Lots of South Park in it, straightforward and yet satisfactory RPG mechanics, and so much variety in all aspects of the game play that it kept being super interesting for me all the way through despite the (relative) simplicity of its combat system and progression. Even if I only managed to play some 80% of it before a bug locked me off from finishing it (as an obsessive completionist, that meant too many hours for me to go back and replay it from scratch), I remember liking it more than the still very good second chapter of the series (which I had actually played right before the stick of truth game, btw: couldn't have had a more direct comparison than that!). Thanks for your videos and games!
So cool to hear about all the cut content, sounds like it would of been really good! I wonder if modders could put it into the game like they did with all the fallout 2 cut content 🤔 also would of loved to hear about your interactions with Matt and Trey, what are they like in person and what are they like to work with etc.
Yooo the mechanic you mentioned where a character stays after he moved seems to be a similar thing to what they did for the South Park The Fractured But Whole game.
As much as I'd love that (Tyranny is one of my all-time favorites), I worry it might be difficult to separate that topic from the drama around Chris Avellone and Obsidian's split.
You bringing up getting involved with the Pillars kickstarter updates was a pretty big nostalgia kick. I remember you answering a question about combat types that'll be in the game, specifically because I remembered grapples wouldn't be in it because of animations. "How would you grapple an ooze" is a phrase that comes to mind now and then.
Mic needs some tweaking, sounds a bit muddy, like the middle-high and high end has been damped. Previously you sounded more bright and lifelike on my Klipsch system. That said thank you for this series! I love listening to professionals talk about the thing they are passionate about.
I had no idea you worked on POE Tim! Would you ever do a video about the specific challenges of crpg genre over the years, and what you see as the future of the genre? What you would hope to see? Will bg3 help revitalize the genre? I was so happy that poe Kickstarter happened...imo it saved the genre for the young people to now enjoy.
Hi Tim! Can you pls make a video explaining how you made art for Arcanum? All these sprites for animations in 8 different directions - sounds like a huge amount of work. Were they hand drawn? Or what was the software you used for that?
I remember being shocked at how much I enjoyed Stick Of Truth. You sort of go into these games based on shows expecting the worst, but I thought "Well it's Obisidian, I like to think if anyone can make a decent RPG now days it's them". Sure enough I really liked the game, it's a shame so much work and content was lost to whims, I remember wanting to play the game a bit longer once I was done with it.
This game got me to try Fallout and Fallout 2. I'd never played a turn based game but I heard this game was very much true to the show and it was hilarious and fun to explore.
Tim's the man! According to Steam, I haven't played this one since it came out. Might be time for a second playthrough. Really cool game. How much interaction did you have with Matt and Trey? Were you required by contract to never make eye contact with Trey?
It would be interesting to hear about your "programming history." Not sure what to call it. Things like, hardware coded on, OS programmed on, OSs and hardware targeted, languages used, IDEs, compilers, other tools (debuggers, profilers, memory leak checkers etc), difficult problems, strange problems, most elegant code you've seen or written, programmer coordination difficulties, how are minimum system requirements chosen and tested for, how to structure code so optimizing later is reasonably feasible, thoughts on automated tests vs human qa, programming styles, when did projects start using source control like svn or git, what build systems and asset compilation systems have been used. For DOS programs, did companies have a bunch of PC hardware around to configure in different ways for testing? Seems even more essential back then without much of an OS abstraction.
Great video! but I prefer your other mic! This mic makes your voice sound more natural, but it seems like there's a constant white noise in the background.
great video Tim! stick of truth was originally published by THQ, before they went bankrupt and the rights were bought by Ubisoft, did that have any effect on development?
Yes, it did, but not in a lot of ways that affected me. Most of the changes happened at the contractual level, which I didn't see. Now, the near constant approval and subsequent unapproval of content came from Matt and Trey and it affected development a lot more, but that continued under Ubisoft like it did under THQ.
I somewhat liked SP but never really loved it so it took me years before I decided to play South Park, but it was awesome. I liked it more than the show. Hearing about how much cool stuff got cut is depressing though.
Game developers should make DLC for their games that are basically comprised of all the cut content, even if it's garbage. Like the Extras on a DVD it would just be fun to see.
I love that game so many mechanics from that game the combat system where u mash buttons correctly for higher damage. The gross out status inflict that makes enemies puke XD 🇩🇪 🧟♀️👸 kenny was one of my fave final bosses. I was pretty interested in finding a way to have those first 2 features I mentioned into my game so maybe one day I could decompile the code for the 360 game but honestly I’m sure I can figure out ways to make my own system with those features. South Park is something I grew up with I was born on 1997 so I grew up watching it I remember seeing the first episode at age 5 I take some big notes from writing a show from Trey and Matt they really do touch on subjects that people wouldn’t touch with a 10 Inch pole they r using that pole to drag the corpse of the celebrity or whatever closer this was going to be my 1 question to u what was it like working on the stick of truth so u answered all my questions n more! I really hope gigs like this made u feel like u had a super amazing career so many of us just get to dream of working on a South Park project but u actually got to do it so congrats! The game would not have been the same level of quality without u dude!
Oh no Tim is transforming into a “real” RU-vidr before our eyes. It’s only a matter of time before he’s screaming from low quality jumpscares and telling us about squarespace.
The tradeoff with the lav mic is that it's a little harder to hear you with a tiny phone speaker, which is generally how I've been watching these. But eh, it's whatever.
I find it hilarious I played that game and thought "How did they make such a great RPG out of a TV show, this is usually impossible" and I had no idea they had the maker of some of my favorite games working on it
Woah, that game used the dungeon siege engine as a base? I'd have never guessed that! Totally different game world, but I guess it makes sense if you look at how the two games play, sort of. That's really cool!
My response to the new mic is basically "Whoa, that's not what Tim sounds like." By the end of the video I ended up thinking that I hope you go back to the old mic.
the story with Clooney is actually he showed the christmas short to people in Hollywood leading it to become well known. Then later on when the series had started, he came on to do a voice and Matt and Trey made him do dog sounds for Stan's gay dog because celebrity guest voices are cringeworthy so they decided to do it in a manner that was less so
Hey, great video! I don't resonate with South Park mid 10-s and later seasons, but the game was super fun! And i have a video suggestion. Make one about chocolate! I know you have things to say! :) Hello from Ukraine and i feel sorry for you about that Roshen bar you had, like, ten years ago :D
That was pretty kool, Tim! However, I think you might have a bit of a wrong perception there with PoE and Tyranny... I think they are your Great-Gamechildren... Think about it? The people who did make those games, work under you making your other games...like Fallout, Arcanum, Temple, etc... So, your like those games' Grandpa!
Something that's worth noting about Big Gay Al is that his introductory episode was ultimately advocating gay acceptance before gay acceptance was truly mainstream (it aired just a few years after the enactment of Don't Ask Don't Tell). It's genuinely cool that the show choose to make gay acceptance one of the first social issues they spent an episode focused on. People who can't see past Big Gay Al's stereotype characterization really are missing the bigger picture.
Of course, they also had another episode about how it's okay for the Scouts to forbid gay members, and how it's okay to use the word 'f*ggot', and several episodes about how being trans is contemptible and ridiculous, so... these things are also part of the bigger picture.
@@DodderingOldMan When did the central message of any episode say that it's alright for Scouts to forbid gay members or that being trans is intrinsically contemptible? I'm not asking sarcastically -- since I haven't seen every episode I know it's entirely possible that others in these comments have points of reference which I don't have.
The first thing I thought of when you said someone having to animate genitals, is the level with the underpants gnomes where your parents are banging in the background lmao.
If you're not under NDA, can you talk now about how PlayStation 3 was programmed and developed for? This is super not public knowledge so whatever you can say is very interesting. Get technical! For the technically interested.
Absolutely love this game, especially given at the time that this genre of RPG was basically dead outside of some of the niche Japanese games. Glad it was successful and played a role in revitalizing that part of the genre, because now we have amazing titles like sea of stars and chained echoes.
Wasn’t that game published by Ubisoft? I haven’t played much of it, but it’s still on my backlog. For a question, what’s your number 1 backlog game you’ve get to get back to? Mine backlog is infinite at this point.
The Stick of Truth was the first piece of South Park media I'd enjoyed in a decade. Since then, I've actively distanced myself from the franchise (while at that point it had just happened passively).
Glad to hear at least some people had some moral qualms about working on that game. Yeah, they make fun of everyone (kind of), but there is no context in which deliberately, consciously naming your main character a racist epithet is okay.
Tim, question about Pillars of eternity. It is one of my favourite games. Deadfire though improved upon first game, was lesser success. To me it seemed to be overburdened by features and sidequests - is it the thing that you were talking about previously when lead should have said: "Great feature - does not fit into game"
