A book typically goes through several rounds of editing before publication-each focusing on different elements of the manuscript. If you've considered working with a book editor, you've likely come across the terms "developmental editing" and "editorial assessment." Learn how these two types of editing differ and how to determine which one might be best for your project.

Have you considered working with a book editor? Let me know why or why not!
@Tulku
@Tulku 3 года назад
My work is not yet ready for an editor, but I've been considering a freelance one before seeking a literary agent. I'm looking forward to it. I used to write/perform stand-up and I miss that instant feedback, but working with an editor will likely be a lot more pleasant when they see something that needs adjustment.

I'm not yet there, but I would like to have a set of critical eyes go over my (eventual) novel. On the other hand, I don't know if I trust it will make enough money to justify hiring an editor...

@@Tulku I hear you on the instant point-my style of editing definitely takes time; I sit with the novel for a bit, digest it, and make sure I'm verbalizing the feedback in a coherent and constructive way. Then, it often takes the writer a while to work through it as well. It's a process for sure, but one I really enjoy!

@@robertnorok That makes sense-editing is definitely an investment, and you have to weigh if it's worth it for you. It can be really hard to estimate how much money your book might earn-especially considering the many different publishing routes you could take-which is frustrating, but a normal part of the process.

Hi Alyssa. Very informative video. Do you think there is a different approach by someone less interested in making money from their book than someone who just wants to be published?

I have a fantasy novel. What type do you recommend to help me publish my novel?
@himcules100

Your videos are very helpful. I have a story set in New Orleans and have been searching for an editor there with no luck. I need an editor familiar with area history and lore. I think a local editor's insight would help me give the book that added dimension of realism even though it is an adult fiction murder mystery. Would be grateful if you could steer me in the right direction. Thanks.

Does pricing vary depending upon the length of a book? For example an 80,000 word novel vs a 180,000 word novel. The larger novel would definitely take more time, so would the price be higher?

How can i get an Edit assessment?
@singervegeta
@singervegeta 2 года назад
Is it important to have an editorial assessment before going for development edit. Or you can directly go for the development edit.
@AlyssaMatesic
@AlyssaMatesic 2 года назад
It depends on what you think your project needs and what your budget allows for--usually an editorial assessment will be more big picture with a smaller cost, while a developmental edit will be more detail oriented at a higher cost. Hope this helps clarify!

I would love a developmental edit. But I can't afford it. If the novel is accepted for publication, they edit it anyway. I wish I could have an editor work with my story but they just charge too much. Is there anyway around this?
@AlyssaMatesic
@AlyssaMatesic 2 года назад
A great alternative is curating a group of beta readers who will give their impressions and thoughts on your book. While they probably won't edit your book on an intense, scene by scene level, they can give you a starting point to deepen your own self-edit of your manuscript! Thanks for commenting!

On average how much will an editor cost for an 85.5k word book draft ?
@AlyssaMatesic
@AlyssaMatesic 2 года назад
It depends on each editor, and on which service package you purchase! Some charge as low as the hundreds, while others charge in the thousands. I have some sample quotes up on my website, if you want a more detailed breakdown of potential prices: www.alyssamatesic.com
