ave some very important news to add about Phantoms! Mine has failed and I have found out that they are not repairable, so any accidental damage inside the warranty or anything at all after the warranty and the speaker goes in the bin!! Check out other threads guys. These speakers are a very high risk purchase!! Also, Devialet service is shocking. They won't support a device unless you have a valid receipt from an authorised dealer. So if you buy brand new from eBay they won't support the warranty, even though they can tell from their own records the manufacturing date. For such an expensive item, the least they should do is offer a fix price swap on a damaged unit. I was going to pair mine up but now I have been put right off!!!
When I buy something of that quality (and price) I buy it from a trustworthy retailer instead of a shady character on Ebay. Also, buying a care plan from Devialet (like you do with your smart-phone) makes sense. No brand in the world will support failing gear if you bought it outside of their authorized retailers' network and without warranty. The "high risk purchase" comes more from your purchasing methods than from the quality of the Phantom in my opinion.
Alexandre Monnier Have you heard of Dell? Buy any second hand equipment of theirs and as long as it is within the manufacturing date they will repair under warranty with no proof of purchase. Many other companies operate in this way too. But that is besides the point. The Devialet care package is limited and what I am pointing out is the speaker is unrepairable. If it fails after care package runs out you throw it away. Conventional speakers and amps can be repaired. Devialet did actually come good once we traced the original owner and replaced my gold free of charge. I now have 2 and they are the best stereo I have ever heard. I am a big fan, but they are a risky purchase unless you have adequate insurance. I would also add that while eBay does have a degree of dodgy characters, many reputable brands operate on their too. I am a careful buyer and my deal was not dodgy, as proven in the end by Devialet. It was just a shame they did not help initially. I can understand it when it involves fake goods, but not genuine.
It actually does go down to 14 hz (gold phantom) but it depends on the source audio production. Meaning the source (disc or digital copy) might go down to 14 Hz, but.... if your physical equipment isn't capable of producing 14Hz (which is where the true LIE resides) then you won't get those low level Hz. Which as Toni mentions is why Bluetooth and WiFi has no difference in audio fidelity. So in short... As thourough as Toni may be, he doesn't truly know what he's talking about.
subbed, wondering if i should by this or the gold as I lisen to all kind of music. How do you think they sound compared to each other? 2 silver + dialog to get stereo = 5000 2 gold + dialog to get stereo = 6500 Is 1500 in difference worth it? Nice tracks you use for testing btw ^-^/
Thanks for the respons, have only felt a bit higer reseloution and better clarety in vocals but noting more. But to much money compared to the silvers and "bling" in the golds for my taste. Silvers then, but do not like the stupid dialog they use.
I would personally buy a pair of Golds, it's just a no compromises experience. I don't know how people listen to these things to get their comparisons but in my experience in an actual reference location, treated, and set up properly in their own stands, with high quality music sources (not Bluetooth) there's no comparison in the price range or considerably above when it comes to the Golds. The Silver and White versions are great but the Golds are another level and it's not just all about volume, the extra power is specifically there for an increase in dynamics and tonal velocity, speed, and overall presence of the audio. It just so happens that if you don't care for that you've got crazy volume too. If you are into reference grade audiophile listening for what I would say is a very generous price, then the Golds will be incredible. If you love music but aren't too concerned about it sounded 1 to 1 real, then a pair of Whites or Silvers will do amazing. I've gone through all three sets and by far, I am most happy with the Golds. Others may differ, but the Golds have improved on a lot of things, and changed some materials to better reproduce the audio to an accurate level.
Go and check out a Geneva XL. It's a beast and will give the Phantom Gold a run for its money. I have both and cannot make up my mind. But the Geneva XL has a CD player built in which gives access to lossless audio without ripping or streaming. Don't waste your money on stereo setup. For the money a good amp and speakers will blow the Phantoms away on sound quality if know what your are doing.
Andy Mountstephens I have already heard the Geneva XL and I wasn't a fan at all. It didn't sound special at all to me plus it looks not that great IMO. No, a system in this price category won't wipe the floor with the Phantom. I have a comparable system (2.000$) and I also made some videos about this against the Phantom. In those videos you can hear that the system sounds more sparkling and refined but the Phantom can well keep up with the system plus it sounded more stable on high volumes because the amp of the system isn't as strong as the Phantoms one.
Phantom-Atic Devialet decided to build the speaker like that so they have to live with the fact that it is going to be compared to stereo systems. Not everyone has another 2000$ laying around for a second Phantom.
But no, you don't see, they didn't 'decide'? You don't go and buy a single speaker for your stereo system and put it up against two speakers. The same, this is not a Bluetooth purpose speaker. It is as much of a reference speaker as a full system. And with that, two is required to make a comparison to a full system. As that is when it is a full system. I don't get how you can say comparing a Phantom to a full system is fair. Or comparing a single speaker of a full system to two Phantoms is fair, as that's literally what this is like. It's as much of a reference speaker as anything else is, just because it's small and compact and has sub-bass capabilities doesn't mean it's suddenly in a different category. Too many people mistaken it as a portable speaker that is going to do crazy single speaker imaging, it is not designed that way or pitched that way. It is not even marketed to an audience like that, but it happens and it's unfair to the engineers who put 10 years of their lives into this thing for someone to say, it's bad because it doesn't live up to a full stereo system. When it is not a stereo system until you add a second one. A single speaker of a full system is no different in the fact it's mono than a Phantom is. So why do those comparisons?
Phantom-Atic The Phantom Gold is sold as a single speaker, so its perfectly reasonable to ask the question about any combination up to the value of £2200. If you already ready have a good setup then the question is pointless, but if you have no system at all and have £2k to spend then buying an amp and a pair of speakers will give you better value if you have the room and you don't want to keep moving your system around. As a single speaker I don't listen to my Phantom Gold while sitting in a chair in a studio, I just let it blast out some top quality dynamics while I am cooking, cleaning or reading. It's also great for parties and a beautiful design which attracts attention. I may pair it up at some point. I'm sure they are awesome as a pair, but again, at £5k, if you fancied a full surround system for the same money and could only afford one or the other, its a fair comparison. I'm a big fan of the Phantom, it is top draw. As a single speaker, dont know of anything better. It's not portable though as it requires a mains outlet. I have a Braven XXL to perform outside where power is not available. Great debate guys!
;-) Was die Soundqualität angeht, liegt der Go+Play weiter vorne. Kommt darauf an!
Lee Lek I don't think so. It would just be possible to play a track on the phantom and then on the Wilison. Switching isn't possible because the system doesn't support Bluetooth.
All these videos and effort, and you are STILL listening to it on the floor? Any speaker will sound like crap [comparatively] when used like that; also, one mono speaker will not give you an accurate representation of it's potential as a system. IMHO, too many flaws with testing methods to discount it as you have done.
Matthew Bolstad placing the speaker on the ground indeed produces lots of reflections but also more bass which those little speakers need when compared to a Phantom. Don't complain about that mono thing, Devialet decided to build it like this so I will test it like this. It's not my fault that there's only one tweeter in the Phantom.
Matthew Bolstad Thanks:) I really put a lot of time and effort in those videos. Funny, right now Iam in the exact same room as in the video, listening to the big system. I will record some stuff here as well, sadly the big system doesn't have Bluetooth and my no copyright CD's haven't arrived yet.
A single Phantom is quite enough for the "bluetooth speaker" clientele (all of those boxes from Naim, Sonos, Bose, etc. are mono in effect) but it doesn't mean that you have to keep it that way. Your audiophile friends buy stereo systems and would probably use the Phantom as a stereo pair, a quad setup or as a surround system if they want an insane home cinema rig! By the way, that nice system in the back... is it not based on mono blocks? But your mate got a pair of them, right ;-)
