MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: Your nasal septum is a thin wall that divides the inside of your nose into right and left sides. It's made of soft, flexible cartilage in the front and bone in the back. A thin layer of tissue called the nasal mucosa covers the septum. If you have a deviated septum, your septum is bent instead of straight. A deviated septum can block air flow through your nose. The procedure to fix problems with your nasal septum is called a nasal septoplasty. To begin the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the mucosa inside one of your nostrils. Then, the mucosa will be lifted away from the septum so the surgeon can see it. To straighten the septum, the surgeon may make a few cuts in the cartilage to relax it. Sometimes, the bent part of the septum may need to be removed. Your surgeon will leave behind enough cartilage to support your nose. After the procedure, the incision will be closed with stitches. In some cases where your septum isn't removed, more stitches will be passed through your septum to keep it straight. Your surgeon may put splints in your nose to support the septum while it heals. The splints will be removed after a few days. If you want to find out more about nasal septoplasty, talk to your healthcare provider.

I had this surgery to fix my loud snoring. It didn't bother me but girlfriends always complained. Before I got married I had the surgery. My nose and throat were painful for a week but it was worth it.

Got this surgery done today. Didn’t feel and currently don’t feel any pain at all. Only discomfort is not being able to sneeze/blow your nose afterwards. Surgery was about 30min and I napped like a baby. Good luck to anyone having this surgery!

I had this surgery done 3 days ago, along with a tonsillectomy(the removal of tonsils) all at the same time. My nose isn’t in pain like my throat is and I heard that the removal of the splints is the best feeling ever, so definitely looking forwards to that. My nose does feel stuffed up and I was bleeding quite a bit after the surgery for like a whole day. I’m just glad I finally did it and can’t wait to breathe normally.

I had this surgery done maybe 4 years ago. Took about 30 minutes and the doctor told me he was doing 13 of them that day! The toughest part is right after your surgery, because your nostril is constantly stuff and you are not allowed to blow your nose. After about a week and the doctor gives you the ok to blow your nose, you will likely blow out the dried crusty scab that was left from the surgery. Sounds scary but it definately fixed my issue.

my doctor didn't put in splints. but my gosh I had a septoplasty and turbinoplasty. my nose used to be so BLOCKED! it was so annoying not being able to breathe. This was so worth it! i'm so glad I can breathe clearly!

Just had my septoplasty surgery done yesterday due to a deviated septum. Was released late last night but on the road to recovery. Cant wait to start to finally breath properly through both nostrils 😊. They put you to sleep which was the bit i was dreading, you just get dizzy and knock off. Next minute i was awake and it's all done. Anyone thinking about going for it, just do it !!

I am having this surgery tomorrow. Will keep everyone posted. Update : Surgery went perfect. Discomfort for few days but worth it. I Feel like why did I waste my time not doing it? Haven't had any headache or cold since I did surgery.

So, I have a deviated septum and can usually only breath out of one nostril at a time. When I'm lying down on one side, I can literally feel gravity close one nostril while the other opens up. Would this procedure correct this and allow me to breath out of both nostrils all the time? This one nostril breathing has been my normal my entire life. I can't imagine what it would be like to breath out of both nostrils simultaneously. SO much more oxygen to the brain! :D

I had this surgery about a month ago and it has been the best decision ever! I had a deviated septum, chronic rhinitis, sleep apnea and everything else that comes with nose issues. I was literally not breathing right at all, constantly spraying my nose with Vicks severe nasal spray and that wasn’t enough. I couldn’t even sleep a normal sleep because my nose would close up on me. I even had the Vivaer Procedure done previously and that did not work either and that ENT Dr. refused to continue to help me. I thank God I found this other doctor that actually recommended this surgery along with turbinate reduction. The first week is a bit tough because of the bleeding, swelling and pain. But it goes away and the meds do help along with the saline wash and antibiotic ointment. The splints were removed within a week and that was amazing! I am so happy I breath again like a normal healthy person.

just got this done 5 days ago, i don’t think i’m taking enough pain meds because DANG it’s sore but the splints are coming out tomorrow, yay! hoping it fixed my breathing issue

Writing this comment from the hospital bed, just had the surgery a few hours ago. I haven’t been able to breath properly in years due to my deviated septum. The surgery lasted for almost 2 hours and I was asleep the whole time so I didn’t felt anything. My nose bleeds and it kinda hurts if i touch it, but the worst part is that you can’t breath. I heard from many people that this surgery is LIFE CHANGING for those with nose problems. Can’t wait to leave the hospital.

I am a bit over 1-week post-op. My surgery was a bit complicated a required a cartilage graph.
@scottlee7993
Just had this done yesterday. So far, no pain what so ever. I haven’t even needed to take any of the pain meds the doc gave me. My throat was abit dry and swore after the anaesthetic but that’s better today!
@mazliza79
Thank you for the informative video. I just had a septoplasty surgery and reduction of fractures of bones 3 days ago due to an accident I had. Nose feeling blocked and there is some discomfort.
