I had this surgery performed a few days ago. Suffered from severe deviated septum and had my right nostril completely blocked. Had the splints taken out today. For everyone who is considering this procedure, go for it without a doubt. Since the procedure is under completely under sedation, you won't realise or feel anything until it is over. Recovery is 1-2 weeks at max. This was my first surgery and I was at this very comments section before the surgery, was panicking and was even considering dropping it at the last minute. I'm so glad I went through with it. Never have I breathed like this in my life.

This is my 1st day of recovery. In a scale from 1 to 10... the pain is 1, this is definitely not as bad as it looks. The most difficult part will definitely be breathing through my mouth only for 3 more days before I can get the splints removed from both nostrils. My throat got extremely dry during the first night and you have to be mentally strong that your sleep quality will be very bad. Overall, I have high expectations to see if I can finally know what is like to actually use my nose 100% to breath at the end.
@raplaza4

Can you tell us how are you feeling now
@longisthenight
@longisthenight 3 года назад
@@raplaza4 Hi, today is day 13. I got the splits removed 9 days ago. I have to say, after the doctor removed them, all you can feel is GLORY if the surgery went on the way it should, you will feel the air flowing through your nose like heaven. You get that glorious feeling from about some minutes, with the warning that any time soon it will stop and during the next following weeks, the nose will start its internal scarring process, that process includes heavy inflammation that will last from around 3/4 weeks to heal 100%. First days without the splints, due to this inflammation, you still feel as if you have them, not able to breath at all. This is extremely hard, since at this point you have more than 8 using your mouth to breath, and knowing you have do be like that even more days is torture. As days go by, you have to constantly wash your nostrils with saline solutions to clean the occasional bleeding. Eventually, at some point you will feel one nostril working, and the other one completely swollen... and as days keep going, from time to time you may feel both working correctly at the same time again. On day 13, I'm on that point: no more bleeding, sometimes only one nostril works, sometimes both do. I know I still have a long way to go, since the surgeon told me it takes not days... but weeks! to heal 100%, but well, so far, so good.

In 2016, I had my deviated septum surgery but without any splints, just desolvable sutures, which isore common than it used to be. I also had my tonsils removed and my uvula shortened, all three in the same procedure. I planned on being off work for 2½ weeks but returned a week early. I am also a longtime runner and I anticipated taking about 6 weeks off from running, but I ran 13 days after surgery. The only really painful part of my recovery was the pain in the uvula area which subsided after just about 10 days. Of course, there was some swelling in the sinuses that needed to go away and occasional dry blood and scabbing that needed to be removed, but I was 100% after about 6 to 8 weeks. This procedure really changed my life and I cant begin to describe just how much. I was 47 at the time and my sleep quality kept getting worse and I would nap nearly every day on my lunch hour just to get through the work day. My right side was blocked and my left side wasn't getting much airflow. I had my surgery on August 10, 2016 and I'm leaving this comment on June 10, 2023, almost 7 years later. I can tell you, this was the greatest health decision I have ever made and one of the greatest overall decisions I have ever made in my life. Not a day goes by that I don't think of how blessed I am to have had this surgery and to actually have full airflow through my nose, something most people take for granted. My sleep and energy improved by probably 300% and the restorative sleep improved my mood and mental sharpness. I can only wish the same for all of you who experience the same procedure.

on my third day of recovery! The pain meds really help and it was the most relaxing surgery I have had, they took great care of me. I was afraid that at night I was going to panic because mouth breathing is hard, but I have learned to relax because it's for the best. I have had my nose pierced for 2 years and my nose ring has been out since the surgery, so I will get back to this comment and tell you if it closed or not. I also have been addicted to nose spray for 3 years. During this time i have thrown away all my nose spray and will never use it again. The splints are a bit uncomfortable, but when I take the meds I kind of forget about it. The most uncomfortable thing is the roof of my mouth because your sinuses connect to the nerves in your upper teeth, kind of feels like you flossed way too hard. I also have been vaping after this surgery, which I know isn't a good idea, but I will get back and let you know how I have healed,! Fourth day: Feeling awesome! I have a deviated septum from having an iron fall on my nose as a toddler when I pulled on the cord and knocked it off the iron board and burnt myself. I saw pics of a little cast on my nose as a baby, but my mum never admitted my nose had been broken when I asked, probably as she felt guilty. I hate what my nose looks like and I notice as I get older, its harder to get air, especially if someone is in my personal space leaning in for a kiss etc. I just wish my nose looked like it should have and not this, but everyone says theres nothing wrong with my nose and I am just being vain if I want to fix it. That side is always first to be blocked completely when I have a cold!

Does anyone else’s switch between left and right being clogged, and sometimes both Edit: I’m 13 now, and I remember when I was 10, I thought it would be a good idea to see how many skittles I could shove up my nose😂. I remember putting 5 in, and only 2 came out. I don’t know if the sugar disintegrated and is somewhere else, or if there’s really 3 skittles just sitting in my nose, but I’m tired of it. This is the only thing I could find that may be the source of it, but I would like to know if anyone had a similar experience.

Just had septoplasty w/turbinate reduction done 8 days ago (Wednesday, August 09, 2023), and I’ll add that I also had 2 bones removed from upper/lower part of my nose. This was because of an enlarged bone spur in my nose. Here’s my experience, and hopefully it “might” be able to assist on your road to recovery, and what you might expect, I realize everyone’s experience is different due to your pain level, so this might give you a rough idea(s) or what to expect at least. 1st night I couldn’t sleep at all, I was up up all night, I hope and pray this doesn’t happen with you. It was strange but I was miserable due to my nose filling up with mucus when I tilted my head upright to sleep. Mucus started to increase around the packing in my nose every time I put my head in a slanted to upright position. Had to sit-up and let it drain all night. I’m assuming it had to do with the “minimal amount” of packing in my nose, thank God I was able to remove the packing 24hrs after surgery. It would’ve been torture for me to continue getting little to no sleep at all, I couldn’t have done another night or at least thank God I didn’t have to do another night. Expect for an entire week to feel weak, tired, annoyed with just the whole process of it all, and with the pain of not being able to really blow your nose, and having a stint jammed in and up your nose for an entire week, and a majority of the time plan on being absolutely miserable, no joke. I’m not trying to be negative but it’s the honest to God truth, but the results after a week are most definitely worth it all. As if I need to really say this here, duuuh, be sure to take the pain meds prescribed to you or extra strength Tylenol, of course, you will need something for pain, which means you will get a prescription for pain. I had also received an antibiotic to take 3 times a day, 30 capsules. I decided to stop taking my prescribed pain med which was Hydrocodone - Acetamin 5-325mg (5% Hydrocodone and 325% Tylenol - Take 1 tablet every 4 hours). I had to end up stopping the prescription since it had Hydrocodone in it, and at night time I use melatonin to get to sleep, not good to mix the 2 together I was told. So instead I just started taking over the counter extra strength Tylenol. I was taking 2 - 500mg tabs every six hours (Your only allowed to take 6 tablets within a 24hr time frame, so I of course was popping 2 at a time at a 1,000mg, it definitely helped a lot with the pain, and it’s annoyance.) Thankfully I didn’t experience any type of pounding kind of pain either in or outside my nose. When I say pounding I mean the physical kind of pain if you accidentally hit your finger with a hammer, not that you would ever accidentally hit your nose with a hammer. Maybe if you were hitting something too close, I know, shut up, right? The pain just came from all the cutting that had to be done, it was like a burning feeling, it wasn’t comfortable at all, and after 6 days just the annoyance and pain of a stint jammed in my nose as well. As gross as it sounds, oh well, but get acquainted with your mucus, no boogers really, just lovely ole mucus. 😂 It sounds gross but I couldn’t tell you how many times I was trying to manually drain and get out as much mucus out of my nose with tissues or toilet paper. I’ve never picked my nose so much in my entire life, it didn’t matter, I could care less, any way just as long as I could get as much of it out of my nose as I could, but then again it will drain on its own a lot too, but for me not nearly as much as I was hoping it would. At times I was “gently” blowing, “gently” I’ll say it once more, “gently” blowing it out as well too, not that often if I could help it. My stints were stitched in, I’m not sure if they all are, there’s a few different types of stints. There will still be a lot of mucus left in your nose no matter how much you try and get it out. You just can’t blow your nose like you normally would though, no, NO. Oh yeah, get used to a dried up and crusty nose too, lovely, yep, absolutely miserable and annoying, oh how much fun, NOT! So this was mainly my miserable and annoying time spent was with having a plastic stint in my nose, so much mucus, dryness, and crusty, and not being able to blow my nose at all, oh so so much fun, yeah right, sure. Believe me after the 3rd day around my nose it looked as if I got punched several times in the nose because of all the dried up blood. Your probably going to laugh or chuckle at this one. I’ve seen on RU-vid where people are given an elastic like band to put under your nose, it looked a lot more better, and probably felt a lot better than what I got 😂. I got a folded face mask to put under my nose, I know, right, don’t be so jealous😆. I couldn’t deal with it, not because of how it looked, I didn’t care about that, but only because it put way too much pressure beneath my nose causing the bottom of my nose to rub the stint in my nose, not good. So instead at night, at bedtime, I wouldn’t of course worn this out in public, but I wrapped a long length of gauze around my head with some more gauze under my nose. I’m sure some of you, probably a lot, are laughing at this point. It was actually a whole lot more comfortable than wrapping things around the ears, and also it gave me the freedom of how tight I wanted it to be, tied it in the back. Not something you would wear out in public unless you were just craving the attention and wanting everyone to know you had nose surgery. They would be thinking, “Yeah, brain surgery too with wearing that crazy thing out in public.” I told my wife I was going to come visit her at work with it on, she said, “No your not.” I then immediately thought, “Yep, your right.” Thankfully I didn’t have any bleeding at all, just a whole lot of excess (from surgery) mixed in blood in most of the mucus, never a flow of blood though. I had no bruising at all, and with the natural eye you can’t tell whatsoever there’s any swelling. Now of course there is, and I nose my nose, I could tell a little bit by looking at it closely, but like I said nothing noticeable at all to another person. The wife and parents were quite surprised to not be able to notice anything. The first 4 days (From after surgery, 3 days after) it was tough, but on the third day I did go out to breakfast and that evening dinner as well. Clean nose of course, and of course without the Dr. Doodle Wink gauze wrap around the head, but definitely brought a plastic bag of tissues as well. For at least 6 or 7 days you will be tired and weak, I’m assuming this might be from not being able to breathe out of your nose too much, less oxygen to the brain. I was a bit absent minded at times, not often, just at times, for some it might be more often than usual, don’t be alarmed. Other symptoms might include: Dry mouth, chaff lips, teeth (gums) sore at times (not bad, noticeable), and during the process of your nose healing it will tickle a lot inside your nose. That’s all I can remember for now, if I think of anything else I’ll be sure to add it as well, don’t fret, things will gradually come back to normal, other than your going to feel like you’ve got a “NEW” inner nose, which will be new and interesting for you, something I’m having to get used to. Last but not least, this was very very helpful. Here’s how to sneeze/cough out of your mouth instead of your nose: To sneeze put both your middle finger and pointing finger together between your teeth, fingers not flat, but upright = like an equals sign, but together, both fingers pointing to the back of your mouth. This will prevent you from sneezing from out of your nose, only your mouth. Hope some of this will help, if you have any questions feel free to ask, after the seventh question I will have to start charging you a consultation fee, joking. It’s worth it, especially if you had as much pain as I used to have, so worth it. Breathing now is like 👍 having literally a brand new nose, it’s very strange feeling, but great 😊, and it’s only been 8 days even, and with no more surf board (stint) in my nose either, NICE! 👍

Hey congrats on the successful procedure and newly gained breathing quality!!! What I was just wondering (since I also had a septoplasty 8 days ago as well), do you have a lot of swellings/crusts/stitchings on the “other side” of the formerly blocked nostril as well? For me, the formerly blocked nostril looks super clean now, the other side however looks like a battlefield!
@RamaWick
@RamaWick 7 месяцев назад
@@alexanderwerner4909 For me the left side was a big job due to removing a bone spur but there was a little bit of work that was done on the right as well. I could be wrong, but if you get splints in your nose my uneducated guess would be that splints would go into both nasal passages just to support the restructuring of the nose after having a septoplasty which means you would have a crooked septum or I should say a deviated septum. Sorry, not sure I’ve never heard in septoplasty surgery only one side being affected, I could be wrong. I had splints in both sides of my nose to support the nose, and they were both stitched in, dissolvable stitches.

@@lazarusvo9584 Hey! Thanks for your reply! I’ve always had some allergies, including house dust/mite, so never really had a dry nose per se. What I did experience though, was quite some crusting inside the nose due to the lack of air circulation within the nose cavity due to the crooked septum. Even though the healing process is still ongoing, I feel like this has already improved. But this could also be due to the constant rinsing I’ve been doing wince surgery.

@sloeginandsleep1170

For what it’s worth, for anyone potentially going to have this surgery: I had it last year, I’ve had a deviated septum since my teens and I’m now in my 40s. Lots of sinus infections and a rapidly diminishing sense of taste and smell was the decider. My surgeon was kind, ever patient and set my expectations right from the start. He was clear what could be achieved and what couldn’t. While my septum was deviated, my nasal bones at the top of my nose were also misaligned which required them to be broken and re-set into place. In my case, the cartilage was replaced with ribcage cartilage, which was very effective and could be shaped in a better way than trying to reuse my nasal cartilage that was very deformed. Overall the surgery took 5 hours, recovery was fairly swift, if a little uncomfortable. Had so sleep upright for 7 days as to not hit or damage my nose while lay down. The incision in my ribs was slightly uncomfortable but far from horrendous. The pain in my face was bearable and even more so with over the counter pain relief. Having my nose packed with gauze for 10 days was the worst part, the removal was pretty grim but for the first time since I can remember, I can breathe again! If you are in a position to be offered the procedure, I’d say go for it! You have nothing to lose.

Can you elaborate on the swelling? I had the exact same procedure as you last week. Baseball injury. They had to rebreak it, align it, and then donthe septo. I didnt have rib cage cartilage removed or my nose modified. Only straightened bones and septo. So my question is since Im post op 1.5 weeks and my nose looks so foriegn. Huge bridge, big nostrils, big tip, when did your swelling recede and your nose return to its original shape? My fear is my nose will change shapes. Any info is appreciated
@sloeginandsleep1170
@sloeginandsleep1170 2 года назад
@@trevorcarrozza2127 I didn’t have the shape of my nose changed, but it had to be widened a little simply because of the structural damage had limited the width of my nostrils. There is always a chance your nose will change shape but it shouldn’t be a very noticeable change. Swelling in my case took nearly 3 weeks to completely subside but still took a while longer to be totally correct. Until that time has gone, I’d suggest not to worry about the shape until you can see a true picture after healing. Maybe your surgeon can shed some light?

Had septorhinoplasty (with fess and turbinoplasty) a while back and it is probably the best thing ever. Since my deviation was so severe and one nostril was completely blocked , cartilage graft had to taken from the ear . My entire septum was rebuilt from the ground up. Talking about the pain , initial days were quite bad paired with the face swelling , Then had cast for 7 weeks and splints removed around week 4. Another thing to consider is the pain while nose suction every week .. But it is worth it at the end . Grateful!!

Just had the surgery done today after 12 years of a deviated septum. Sleeping is a bit of a struggle and the pain is a little more for me than it seems for others. In 4 days the splints and packing will be removed. Breathing is a challenge and so is laying on my back with my head elevated and tilted.y appetite is pretty small but I assume that is from the general anesthesia and the lack of variety in soups I have. The actual surgery went very smoothly it seemed, I vaguely remember going under and don’t even remember waking up. The only really painful thing is my throat where the intubation tube sat as well as a minor headache. I’m hopeful to see good results here in a few days and in recovering quickly as I need to get back to work asap. Also for anybody considering getting this surgery make sure you have someone who can help you the first few days and you can take off work / school. They only do the surgery once you are fully grown so for those of you who have a deviated septum and are still young then you’re just going to have to wait I’m afraid.

Pretty cleared up for the most part, still taking medicines and will be for a bit longer. The only thing is that rubbing under my nose feels like I'm wiggling the bone but that's just the nerves not settling in yet.

I'm just now looking into this because when I go to the dentist and he is working in my mouth I can't exhale. I should have looked into it 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with sleep apnea or 20 years ago when they said I have mild asthma. This really seems like the root cause of all of that. 🤞Here's hoping that the ENT Dr agrees.

Septoplasty, if needed. Turbinate tissue reduction via ablation. Outpatient, in clinic or hospital. Literally 10 minutes and some waiting around. This is always the preferable treatment, and it works. You might need it once/twice a year for a few years, then once every few years after that. The step up from this is the Turbinate out fracturing technique. This is an inpatient procedure. The two turbinate procedures here are the only two treatments that have no clinically evidenced manifestations of ENS. Thank me later.
