Devildriver overlord Dez Farara will readily acknowledge the basic tenet of heavy metal is to achieve the essence of power and complete freedom. At the most base level, it's a concept that can manifest itself in the form of a high-speed joyride or defeating one's antagonists, be they Frank Frazetta-rendered warriors or the guy/girl who was looking at your lover too long at the biker bar and now has a concussion and a collection of broken pool cues. On Devildriver's sixth release, Winter Kills, the band certainly didn't skimp on the riffage, the idling-dragster tempos or the sheer sonic drive that makes them one of heavy music's respected outfits. Winter Kills is all about the creation of flashover moments to empower people with hope and affirmation-or at the very least, the inspiration for people to create great work and engineer their own meaningful universes. This ain't no tired Tony Robbins posi-posturing or Joel Osteen's cartoony, cash-and-Christ posing. The world got more oppressive, and Devildriver are stepping up their game to keep hope alive in the most bone-powdering, cochlea-bleeding, neck-snapping way possible.

Very true, people are taken back when they get into my truck and hear whats playing considering I rarely wear black and look semi-professional with no visible tats. Anyone that's lived 40 years and their outlook is unchanged hasn't lived, they haven't had any profound life experiences educate them, knowledge has missed that individual. Upon first view most will be like wtf. Truly it's evident the band purposely made the video with a comedic intent. A band with such maturity and conviction can step away from what's expected of them. Devildriver rules!!!

Anyway, my point was that 13yr old kids hear Slipknot and Metallica (and yes, I know Metallica's influence on metal -- including most modern thrash) and think that they're instantly experts on metal. I wasn't disputing Metallica's influence, just saying that they've become the sort of mainstream metal band for kids just getting into metal.

Video's meant to be ironic. Dez said 'We never did a video with humour before, so appetite was a day in the life of a guy who has no life' + if you listen to the lyrics, the video is hugely ironic. Like the week this video came out I left secret bread on a shop window as well. When DevilDriver did the Metal Alliance your the guys in front of us brought secret bread. Literally looked at me and did a quiet "Shhhh..." with his finger to his lips. Like two years ago I found secret bread in a different city. I was listening to Beast. I laughed out loud. That's one of their inside jokes called Breadman. Dez did an interview about appetite a while ago. Essentially the band keeps leaving Breadman in random places at venues.
