In this 2-part Route 66 episode, I walk on the restored Devils Elbow Bridge, which was part of the original alignment for nearly 20 years. For decades, it was in disrepair but it wasn't until the 20th century that plans for restoration were announced. Route 66 travelers can now drive and walk on it!
I also visit the Elbow Inn, which has been around for as long as the bridge. I chat with the owners, Pamela Thompson and her son, Clark, about the history of the place. The popular bar has seen some struggles in the last few years, and closed in 2019. Plans for renovation and re-opening are underway.
