This is a commonly known story among actual Christians it’s to show how even the most mightiest men can fall to sin when they don’t follow God

The David story tells the truth about giving into lust. It's brilliant and actually shows how it can wreck your life.

The stories she told are literally some of the most well known in the entire Bible.

That first story she mentions isn't a secret. There's an actual Veggie Tales episode about that episode.

The Bible records things it does not condone.

This is the perfect example of little knowledge is dangerous

The Bible isn't supposed to only tell of warm and fuzzy events. It's a record of history that tells of how God interacts with His people.

If she read the whole thing when she was 8, she probably understood less than 10% of it. Let's all just be honest.

The Bible says people push the truth away because they love their sin too much. It also says, "The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.'" Deep down, people know there is a God, but they also know to acknowledge God would mean there would be moral accountability. People don't want that.

some big discrepancies in the telling of the story of Tamar. After Judah lost his second son. His last son wasn't given to Tamar for two reasons, one, he was too young and the second is because Judah was afraid he might loose his last son. So he didn't promise Tamar that she will be the wife of his last son for these two reasons and not the one reason mentioned in the video. Tamar went back to her home as instructed by Judah, again that is all that Judah does, he instructs her to go and wait at her fathers house. Tamar while at her fathers home wore cloths that is synonyms for someone who is a widow and grieving. She finds out that Judah is coming to where her fathers home is because he wants to sheer his sheep, upon hearing this Tamar has a plan. She knows that she isn't pledged to Judah's last son and she wants to take it upon herself to get pregnant. So she takes for cloths that are meant for grieving and switches them for cloths that is synonyms for a prostitute at that time. Main point here is that she is wearing a head veil and as such no one can see her face. Judah walks into this town/village and sees this prostitute who is wearing a veil and he asks to sleep with her. This is where the video goes off the rails. She asks Judah what she will get in return for sleeping with him and she knows that this is her father in law and he doesn't know who she is. He says he will give her one of his sheep in his village/camp. Judah isn't at his camp/village, so this is supposed to be a promise for future payment. She asks him for a guarantee for this payment. He asks what she wants and she says she wants a seal with his cord and his staff. He agrees and he sleeps with her. Judah didn't sleep with her and not have payment, they discussed how Judah will pay her and she played him in this part of the story. Tamar isn't this poor innocent person and neither is Judah. So she goes back to her fathers home and switches into her cloths meant for grieving. Judah returns to his camp and sends a friend to pay her but he cannot find her and he returns to Judah and tells him that she cannot be found. He is embarrassed that she has his seal and staff. But he makes peace with the idea that she has stolen it. We all now know that this was Tamar's plan, she didn't want a sheep, she was playing Judah and got proof of the person she slept with. The video made it sound like Tamar became a prostitute because she wanted to make a living. This isn't true, she wanted to get pregnant from sleeping with her father-in-law. Plain and simple. She got pregnant and Judah is told that Tamar is found to be pregnant and the assertion is that she prostituted herself. Judah wants her killed but before she is killed she sends him his staff and seal. Tamar honey potted Judah and got what she felt she deserved. Moral of the story. Men need to keep it in their pants coz women who are just selling sex cannot be trusted. The other moral of the story is do what is right, Judah in his fear doesn't give assurances to Tamar that she will be married off, so when he didn't do that the rest of the story played out as it did. Judah is also the same guy who earlier discouraged his brothers from killing Joseph but instead mentioned to have him sold. Joseph lived and as per what is said in the bible he became the second highest in Egypt and also saved Egypt and his family from starvation. So Judah is seen as someone who loved his family when the rest of them were okay with killing one of them. He isn't perfect but neither is Tamar and all of them played their role.

The fact that the imperfections of the people of God are on full display throughout the Bible is one of the most compelling things about it. Clearly not hiding anything.

You got to love when people try to explain the Bible without knowing anything about the history or context and stories okay

Here’s another interesting and violent Bible story for the comment section. There was a leader of the Canaanite army named Sisera. He and his soldiers were fighting against the Israelites under a leader named Barak. Sisera’s army fell and all of them were killed, but Sisera himself ran away. A lady named Jael saw him outside her house and she told him to come inside, that she was a friend and would protect him. He went in with her and she gave him milk to drink and a blanket. He told her to watch the door, and if anyone came by, to say that she was alone in the house. She agreed to this and Sisera laid on the floor with the blanket and fell asleep. Jael then took a hammer and nail, while Sisera was asleep, and drove it through his temple and nailed his head to the floor of her house. She left him just like that, and eventually Barak came by, still hunting Sisera. Jael met Sisera outside and told him she had the man he was looking for, and led him to the dead Sisera, his head still spiked to the floor.

Actually, most churches do not shy away from those stories, at all, especially the story of David and Uriah. That's why religious folk will name their kids Uriah, and they become MMA fighters.

Michelle starts by saying these stories have historical context. Proceeds to not include any of the cultural or historical context for the stories. JOE PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE ON TH E SHOW WHO ACTUALLY CAN PROVIDE CONTEXT AND UNDERSTANDS THESE EVENTS/STORIES TOLD IN THE SCRIPTURES

Why would the Old Testament authors include such embarrassing details with no “happy endings” in each book? It describes the constant failures and sin from Israel’s leaders, to prove the point that no man can conquer sin, we all need a savior. The Bible states this from the very beginning with Adam’s fall followed by God foreshadowing the need for a new Adam (Jesus) as God promised in Genesis 3 someone from Eve’s offspring would conquer the serpent and redeem mankind. All of it points to Christ.

In the old testament it was Judah the son Jacob and the son begins the line of King David. Another element of this line is Lot who had Moab through incest with his daughter. Ruth is a direct descendant and King David is a direct descendant of Ruth.

If these stories were from random scrolls found in Egypt, Joe would be marveling at how Humans were just as crazy back then as we are today.. but since they came from the Bible, he acts like we have to be careful when reading them 😂

The Bible doesn't contradict itself.

When david prayed after this he begged god not to lose the lord's favor, even if he lost everything else for his sin. Thats how the story ends. Saul asked to not lose his kingdom and power; david asked not to lose the lord's favor. A man after the lord's heart. The story is to teach us not to fall into adultery and lies. And it is always a serious problem if you end up mixed up in that stuff

I’m sorry this woman was brought up around a bunch of people that couldn’t help her understand the stories of the Bible. I’m 50 and have just recently became a Christian. I’ve heard of both of these stories because I’ve actually read the Bible. I enjoy hearing different people have different perspectives on the same story. It’s what makes us interesting as humans.

They are talking about these stories from the Bible like they are trying to make fun of or make the Bible look bad. God hates sin. These stories are in the Bible because they really happened and the Lord is trying to teach us lessons from other peoples mistakes. Just because it’s in the Bible doesn’t mean that God condones this bad behavior. They are historical facts that teach.

What is left out is what the Lord did to punish David for this evil act. Part of the greater story here in my opinion is. No matter the blessings the Lord God may grant and give you as well as your importance in the God's plan. We are all human and sinners capable or good and evil. No matter how important to God plan you are or are not, we all fall short of what it takes to get into Heaven. God knows this and this is why he sent Jesus to die for our sins, so that we can experience and fill the Kingdom of Heaven.

One of the most frightening stories is the story of Job. The Devil has a meeting with God, and God declares Job without fault, and sinless, the devil says “let me take his health away, his family, and all his belongings, and he will curse you then” This story is a sorta microcosm of my life story I lost everyone I truly loved : my wife to another man, my father (he was my best friend) to murder My 2 best friends, and the love of life, fiancé, to suicide. Job ends up suffering beyond belief physically also (soars head to foot, insomnia) Job ends up in the end getting a lesson from God, which is very interesting to read, and having an even larger family and an even happier and extended life, that has not happened to me yet and it probably won’t

I grew up in church and the only stories that weren't taught were 2 in i think Judges. The first is were a crowd demanded that a stranger in town be given to them so they could rape him, but the man hosting the stranger instead gave them his female servant. So they beat and gang raped the girl and afterwards, she crawls back to her masters house and dies outside his front door. If i remember right, this starts a big conflict where cities go to war with one another. The second is when a man prays to God for victory in battle and promises to sacrifice the first thing that approaches him when he gets home. So after the fight his daughter who is his only child is the first to approach him. He then lets his daughter go and grieve her virginity on a mountain with her friends for a time, and when she returns he sacrifices her.

The story of God, The Devil and Job was a more disturbing story then anything I read in the bible.

That story is about Judah, the son of Jacob who became known as Israel. Rehab and Ruth are also in the line of Christ. There IS a message in that, at least, I have found one for me.

Important part of King David's story is that he really was caught up. He was out of place not where he was supposed to be. His men were fighting in his name but he was posted up in the rear. The prophet told David a story about two neighbors. The story made King David burn with anger to the point that King David said this neighbor must die. The moment King David realized he was the villain in the story he repented and Yahweh could feel his hurt and repentance. As a result he lost that child he tried to cover and his house was cursed. "THE SWORD WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HOUSE" They are fighting today as you read this.

There is a reason why seminary students (at least in most evangelical seminaries) are required to study Hebrew, ancient cultures, language forms, etc. There is a cultural context that must be understood. And these things are not hidden from anyone; are commonly discussed in most churches, and if someone hasn't heard them, then one ought to question what sort of church you have been attending.

The Bible does not condone slavery. It was a well-known fact that people would become indentured servants in order to pay off their debts. However, there were rules around how a master could treat these people and they also would be freed once their debt had been paid off. Very different than what most people would consider to be slavery.

she asks Joe if he's read the whole Bible. He says yes, but later admits no. Most people are like this. They've read 1% but will lie to you and say they've read 100%. Unlike Joe, most of the people I talk to will dig in and defend the lie. What good does that do? You want to retain your ideas not based in reality? (1) Read the whole thing for yourself. The only people who've "never heard" these Bible stories... are people who don't go to church. This is standard stuff that is taught in Sunday School and preached on in sermons. The "woman before Eve" is NOT in the Apocrypha. That is Gnostic teachings. Which is NOT Biblical writings in any way shape or form. It's not taught in church. At least not a Bible believing church. To many people make the claim certain books wasn't added to the Bible. Yeah... books that have nothing to do with the Bible, or Christianity. That's no different than someone saying that the "eating ice cream, candy bars, and every other sweets diet" was left out of all our diet books.

The first time I went to Sunday School was when I was visiting relatives for a wedding. The story for that Sunday? Abraham being commanded by God to make a human sacrifice of his son Isaac.

The Torah (The first five Books of Moses) are the only books proposed to have been written with direct dictation from God.

The Bible can be rough because it has a lot of beautiful things to say but also stories that are not for the faint of heart. I remember setting out to read the whole Bible when I was 18 and I think I stopped a couple of books into it. The Old Testament is brutal. I ended up doing it again and actually finishing it. Proverbs, Psalms, Job, Ecclesiastes, all beautiful books with great wisdom and knowledge. I still struggle with faith and religion to this day. Show me a picture of an orangutan and I can’t help but see a distant relative. This life is very weird when you get into a deep thought about it lol anyways, hope y’all have a good day!

Every story has a meaning in the Bible. It also shows you that not even God takes away the life consequences of your actions but He shows you mercy!

The story of David and Bathsheba was taught on frequently and preached on often enough by our pastor when i was growing up. Christians know these stories very well.

The story of Bathsheba is pretty well known for anyone who has spent enough time in church. It's a lesson teaching that even the beloved King David can fall to sin, and he was punished accordingly.

It's a psychological story that helps us to discern about our own choices in life --- many lives

When she was young the most popular Bible was -without question- the king James Version. For an 8 year old to read the KJV cover-to-cover would be akin to a 3rd grader reading Shakespeare's collected works. (Wordy, complex, rich and archane vocabulary, etc). The vast majority of people who claim to have read the entire Bible are doing so out of defensiveness.

I think people like Mr. Rogan should not take her word for it but should fact check these stories.

I had a pastor in school (U.K) that would say every story in the bible good or bad. Make up our own minds while accentuating his belief. Best way to teach a religion imo.

Anyone who says that the bible contradicts itself, DOES NOT understand the text as it was intended. Context is the most important part of the bible. They thought differently then, than we do now. David was never supposed to be a savior. Just a king. Not THE King. Sounds like she read the important parts, then interpreted them to mean something different. David is a sinner just like all of us. God didnt have to divulge what David did. He did it because he is an honest and Holy God. This lady is off her athiest rocker.

They always are in shock & dismay over It condoning slavery (BONDSERVANTS paying a debt owed to people with their service & were freed after 7 years unless they chose to stay as a beloved part of that family) leaving out how God disapproves of harsh evil American slavery.

The story of Batsheba and the murder of Uriah is interesting in that the plot is high-level and very secretive, only a handful of people know (David, Batsheba and Joab, the commander of the army, who put Uriah on the frontlines to die) yet once the conspiracy is masterfully wrapped and swept under the carpet; God through His prophet Nathan unwrapped it to expose David's sin. It's actually a wonder that the story was written (humiliating scandal for an otherwise a famous king), made it into the bible and got read by ancient Israelites and us. It's a dark story but so many lessons can be learned from it, and the biggest point IMO is God is always watching and knows your darkest secrets.

I read the dictionary cover to cover when I was eight and while there's a lot of beautiful stuff in there there's also a lot of violence and a lot of stuff that requires historical context

What's funny to me though is that was probably the pg version of the other stuff that happened. Debauchery and dismemberment are just a few of the Things that occur in the bible that most people don't know about
