Its not just that they didnt win, that game was a 30 point blowout more than halfway through and phoenix started fouling like crazy in order to get him the ball back. It was straight up hero ball in garbage time. 70 is still insane but the performance has a major asterisk on it when you factor in game script.

@@ikellama i am a celtics fan and I remember watching the game. It was amazing what book did and was very impressive for a player of his age to put up a crazy statline like that but it was very artificial. The suns were down by double digits the whole game, a good chunk of his points came in the last 2 minutes against the Celtics’ garbage time unit. Its not on the same level as other high scoring performances of its time.

To say him scoring 70 isn’t impressive is hating. But i dont think its hating to point out how artificial it was, a bulk of those points were in garbage time and to the outcome of the game were meaningless. That game was a 30 point blowout more than halfway through and he did a lot of his damage on the Celtics’ benchwarmers. Not to mention Phoenix were intentionally fouling to maximize possessions. That was the equivalent of a my career game in all honesty.

@@aurianzarrineh2633 scoring 50 is nice on anybody but if you are playing against nba players in a regulated game with the pace as slow as it was back then and whatever you say they were still trying to win to score SEVENTY at 20 years old back then is crazy.

although unofficial, i will always view klay's 60 piece in 29 minutes as a 70+ point game. he didn't even play in the 4th, if i remembered correctly.. meanwhile, devin played until the buzzer went off in that 70 point game vs the celtics, being down double digits for the most part of the game i believe. still impressive. not taking anything away. but klay was doing crazy sht like that before everyone else did. unfortunately for klay, those injuries man... and he was a top 5 2-way guard at his prime putting up offensive records.
@solitude7566

Klay's game was 3 months earlier so basically the same time. What I remember hearing about that was he only dribbled like 11 times all game. Not to take anything away from Klay but he basically just caught and shot assists from Steph and Dray all night and was red hot. Booker was on a trash team and was creating and working through doubles in the second half. Book was only 20. Then again Suns lost. Both games were great and Klay also played tough defense when he was younger where as Book wasn't expected to on a lottery team for his first few years.

Booker instantly jumped in respect by saying he lost tho as soon as he brings it up. This is the old head talking but kids these days dont appreciate the win as much as they respect the stats. I personally wouldn't want to score some extra points in a game we are already losing by double digits in the last 4 mins of 4qtr. I've always thought it was corny when players do that or check back into a game that is over to get an extra rebate for a triple double. Now, if there is still a chance you win, go for it. Even if it's just a couple of seconds. Calling 2 TOs just to score an extra 5 points is corny.

Do you have any idea what it takes to score 70 points in the NBA under any given circumstances, let alone against a championship contender of the time? The Celtics were actually trying to stop him - it's a matter of pride not to let someone drop 70 on you. And he did. Age 20. The first to do it in 11 years and no one could do it for the next 6 years. One of only 10 players who ever did it... NBA "fans" are getting worse than old ladies discussing soap operas. Booker gets hated on but for me it's subtle stuff. "I lost though." Like doesn't even consider it "we lost." It's just subtle stuff like that. Like you're still on the Suns. Like y'all all lost. Maybe he's trying to take the blame for the loss? Idk it's just weird to refer to a loss as "I lost" or "I won" in a team sport. And for the record, I'm not mad he scored 70 and stayed in the game. Team sucked and the goal is to lose games when you're a team that young and bad. That kinda individual accomplishment and you take the L? That's good for team chemistry and it's good for the team aiming for the draft and adding more pieces. To me it's more that I think that moment gave him this feeling of "these guys are bums and I'm not. I'm not on their team." And that's actually the bad part of Mamba mentality. That was the toxic part of Kobe's game before he matured and trusted his teammates and considered them a part of the equation even though he was much better. I think Devin Booker is going to learn to get rid of the subconscious arrogance that he's not even intending to have and I think that's when he's really going to figure it out and win.

Him scoring 70 in an L is the defining moment of his career so far. Its so typical for him. That or Luka owning him.

Your lame af, Luka is seasoned at this point, that was a 20 year old booker with this undefined version of spreading the floor, next time just say it was the first and the efficiency was down because it was one of the first times seeing someone drop 70 with the blueprint of todays nba play style. Don’t try to compare Lukas stats it’s disingenuous

I am a Celtics fan to preface this and I dont want to sound like a hater by any means. But Booker’s 70 was very artificial and to me was not that impressive when you compare it to other high scoring games of that level. He scored a large bulk of his points in garbage time of that game and Phoenix were fouling the Celtics in a blowout loss in order to maximize possessions. He was playing hero ball on a bad team in a game that was lost and was only focused on scoring not actually winning. 70 points no matter how you slice it is still a incredible feat but if you compare it to Lukas or Embiids its not even close.

@@shaker027 he took 40 shots and a ton of free throws, he definitely stepped it up in garbage time. Again 70 points is very impressive but it isnt some all time performance in my opinion. It was honestly a prelude to this stat padding era.

I remember that game, me and my boys were betting and we were like " ain't no way book gives 27 to Avery Bradley". Next morning we wake up to 70 on his head. Watched the game, it was never really a contest. Celtics play better, Book goes for his numbers. The fourth quarter was especially embarrassing. But they we're winning 25 games per season those years, so I can't blame him. One of the few players from those rosters that stuck around

@@aurianzarrineh2633 we didn't know that back then, get off from school at 1 or 7 PM and just place a bet for the sake of it before going home for dinner, it was pure intuition, there were a few FB groups posting who's ruled out for the evening. But since we're in Europe, we we're betting at noon on the east coast and morning hours on the west coast. Most teams hadn't even done shoot arounds by that time and we were like 16 on the other side of the globe betting 50 cents on a 8 player parlay 😭
