I've watched that Magic and Cavs series in 09 multiple times for nostalgia reasons. It was clear Cleveland did not prepare for Orlando and Lebron damn near willed them past. The buzzer-beater he hit in game 2 with Gundy shrugging like what else could they have done to stop this man. Lebron was on a mission and I believe they beat LA if they beat Orlando. We have seen plenty of athletic guys come into the league, but none match 09 Lebron. How many small forwards could block prime Dwight Howard in NBA history at the rim? I still wish Lebron and Kobe met in the finals and it is the greatest miss in NBA history. Also crazy how JJ went underutilized until he went to the Clippers.

100% agreed on the Suns playing a role, thought of Nash and Amare running pick and roll while Barbosa slid on the corner 3. Nash himself was so hard to guard, he practically created space wherever he went on the court due to his unpredictability and control and IQ. Spacing changed much earlier than this though it was not full time. I mean think of the Rockets teams and they played around Hakeem with Horry at the PF spot and surrounding him with shooters. The same thing happened with Shaq. If you are talking a 5 wide system that began much later when bigs like Joker, Embid, etc or even Warriors with Green at the 5 when he could shoot decently from 3 and do some ball handling.

@oaklandsoldier8520 Месяц назад

@zennihilator3724
@zennihilator3724 Месяц назад
Right, the blueprints were there in the 90s, you could see some coaches experimentating with run and gun smallball basketball already in that period, but it was very primitive and mostly utilized to push the pace, not so much to optimize space in the half court... I think that was in large part due to the fact that there just weren't enough players at the time that could really punish teams from the 3PT line consistently. And the players weren't really being taught to play basketball in that manner anyway... It took until like the mid 2000s for long distance shooting to improve to a point where you could reliably count on a two or three players on a team to knock that 3PT shot down consistently, of course, bonus points if you were near 7 foot, cause then you also took the opposing rim protector out of the paint. So yeah, by the mid 2000s, you already start seeing the proto-modern pace & space offense with the Phoenix Suns. You just needed a team that had all the right pieces on the roster that playing any other style didn't really make sense. You had Marion and Boris Diaw who were basically versatile enough to play 3 positions, a lot of outside shooters and a GOAT level playmaker in Nash... Then you had the Warriors who beat a 67-win Dallas team in 2007 by playing lineups like Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Jason Richardson, Stephen Jackson, Mikael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Al Harrington... with Biendris being their only Center who played less than 20 min per game. Around that time it became really obvious that having basically two 7-footers in the game at the same time was overkill and that offenses run much better with only one Center and another taller wing that can play on the perimeter (like Shawn Marion, Diaw, Rashard Lewis etc.) so Boston and LA put Garnett and Gasol at Center and dominated the league in the late 2000s, so then it only made sense for Miami to play Bosh at Center too. And this is where i think OKC failed at the time. The were clear title contenders in 2011-2013 but kept playing Perkins and Ibaka for some reason with Russ there who was a poor shooter himself. They should've just put Ibaka at 5 (With Collison as the backup 5), KD at 4 and brought some wing defenders/shooters. And they'd be unstoppable.

Mavs with Nash were precursor to Suns with Nash because Nowitzki could stretch it at the 4. Actually, if you look back, a lot of championship teams could play 4 out. One of the reasons Horry has so many championships is because he allowed Lakers and Rockets to do it. Pistons became really good when the picked up Rasheed. Duncan and KG didn’t have a three ball but they could spread it too.

"Spacing" was the Hallmark of the 1995 Houston Rockets with Rudy Tomjonovich as Head Coach, who swapped Otis Thorpe for Clyde Drexler, thus sliding Robert Horry into the "4". Olajuwon now became a low post scoring threat in isolation in the paint, while being a facilitator of the ball to slashers (Drexler, Elie, Horry) or shooters (Cassel and Smith) at the same time. This created a crazy mismatch for the Orlando Magic in the 1995 Finals, thus leading to Houston's repeat championship. The Orlando Magic with SVG and Dwight Howard had the exact same type of personnel on the floor in 2009, but we're geared to making 3 point shooting a greater staple on offense. The SVG Magic had their starters take nearly 20 3pt shots a night, with Alston, Reddick, Pietrus and others taking 3pt shots off the bench. Dwight being a Monster could dominate the paint to vacuum up any missed shots on the offensive glass.

But he's right about Marion. Marion at the 4 wasn't as scary at 3 point line like Rashard Lewis was or Rasheed Wallace was, even though Sheed still mostly played in the post.

I can't begin to explain or put into wordd how grateful and happy I am for this kind of show to be created for us casual and novice fans to finally have a show that teaches how complex and dynamic the game of basketball is. It makes us appreciate the players and coaches that much more. And put into prespective how difficult it really is.

@allan3364
@allan3364 Месяц назад
Can’t. Because nobody could shoot lol. MJ, King, and Bird already had the luxury of having the illegal defense rule where a defender has to stand above the free throw line if the guy he’s guarding is above the 3pt line - even if it’s Luc Longley lol. Offense was a lot easier back then because you couldn’t double before the catch nor play zone.

They'd have to change their game entirely to play in this era. Idk where people get that they'd somehow manage tons more points playing nowadays when we have some of the best shooters to ever touch a basketball not getting those crazy points. People will hate me for saying this and that's fine, but MJ's game today would translate to what we see with DeMar DeRozen. Mid range is nice but he's not consistent from 3 and doesn't get to the rim easily because you now have weak side help and sophisticated defensive schemes that wasn't around in Jordan's day. Jordan would have to learn to run off of screens and shoot, he'd have to utilize the pick & roll, cutters, playing out of the corner, etc. His game would not translate well to how basketball is played now

I never saw BK or Bird really play but MJ yeah on TV. I feel like he kinda had solid spacing on his championship teams. Like on that second three-peat team when they'd put Rodman at the 5, Toni at the 4, Pip at the 3, MJ 2, and Kerr 1. I can't see of everyone out there on the RU-vid clip but from what I can see and remember that was the lineup on the Kerr game winner. Same with the Paxon game winner against Phoenix, it's MJ, Pip, Grant, Paxon, and Scott Williams who must've been out there because he was younger than Cartright. I don't remember. If it was today's game, with that same roster, Grant would be at the 5, Pip at the 4, MJ at the 3, Paxson 2, and BJ Armstrong at the 1, keep Pip running the show at his point forward spot.

I feel like it was the Dallas Mavericks under Don Nelson with Dirk, Nash, and Finley that were the first team to play the more "modern offense" you see today with all the spacing.

Detroit started it with Rasheed Wallace, but then it spread with Dwight and Rashard Lewis. Pistons figured out you can beat Shaq with a 3pt shooting 4.

As a lifelong LeBron fan (I’m from Ohio), I can say that that 2009 Orlando round was one of the toughest, most painful and frustrating series I’ve ever witnessed. It’s super interesting to hear LBJ echo that, saying that he’s never watched the series again. That says a lot for him. Also gives perspective on the dramatic move to Miami. The Cavs - LeBron - were so good all season in 2009. So good! Even Varejao, Mo Will were excellent. But the Magic were unstoppable. They countered every move, ever play. The “excellent” Cavs suddenly looked like a Junior Varsity team with 1 star player and a bunch of nobodies.

And it happened the same a year later against Celtics. With the back to back MVP who got the 1# seed, unable to get finals and forced to create superteams (but he now buys useless podcasts to make us believe the first he had it wasn't, in fact he mocked Dirk after game three thinking they already had the win). Thankfully he managed to get even Ray Allen, to then quitting again on his franchise once the first loss (not 1, not 2, not 3, exactly lol) happened again. Fortunately for you Cavs fans, NBA mafia rigged draft lotteries and then he and LeKlutchMafia could create another super-team to get another negative record in the finals even for his second stint and quit again when another round of this "fascinating journey" had the chance to happen elsewhere.
