when Morgan was 15...he played on stage with Frank Zappa...with NO rehearsal before that day....the guitarist is Mike Keneally ...he ALSO played in Zappa...same group that had Morgan as a guest. The guy playing WARRGUITAR is Marcus Reuter,,,he plays with Tony Levin And Pat Mastelotto in GROUP called Stickmen...in other words...Devin decided to surround himself with TOP QUALITY musicians....great move. The results are quite apparent.
Weird and clumsy? For starters, this was the first time this song was performed live. New material. And Devin is performing with a new band that hasn't been playing together long. Go listen to the studio version. Go listen to the whole album. It's brilliant. Devin is brilliant.
Yeah man. Morgan Agrën has been my absolute favorite drummer since Special Defects. He's so good. But I gotta say. I've heard Genesis about 100 times. Morgan missed some key parts. Wasn't very dynamic in the first minute of the song here. I still love the guy and think he's the showpiece of creative drumming but I can absolutely tell that he didn't spend enough time on this track. I took me a long time to realize that while Devy's music is pretty straightforward, there are alot of dynamics and nuisances that really grow on you. I see now how it is a new type of 'Progressive' music but kind of rewrites the definition of the genre for me; it's no longer just about abstracts and time shifts, but just a new approach to metal that actually moves it forward in a different direction. Never before, have I gave this much of a shit about the dynamics of a live track, so Dev has got to be doing _something_ right for me to criticize my favorite drummer. Haha
Shout out to Morgan agren for playing those intense blast beats so well. Terrific job by the whole band. Really weird hearing Keneally playing metal. Townsend’s the man.
I did that too. And everything else really. BUT, I believe that it's not him. It's a sample. Can you see that he is always hitting the pad while the blast is going?
Haven’t seen it mentioned yet but kudos to Diego for orchestrating all that. There are so many samples and live licks intertwined. First I heard this track on the album I thought to myself, whoever plays keys for this live will have their hands full. The amount of accuracy needed on building and executing this many layers is every bit as difficult as virtuoso speed and time shifting on piano (which he also has). He will absolutely go down as the unsung hero of this tour
You can tell he’s still getting warmed up with this tour. Kingdom was released in 2000. Today he kills it without even looking down. I could see an insane empath tour two to three years from now. Given the deluxe is a double album, I think he should keep at it until the entire album is mastered. The best Tool show was easily (seen them 5 times) the second round of the Aenima tour.
I love watching him lead the players through what is a dense and really schizo musical piece. It's cool seeing it actually performed as a living, breathing BAND versus a bunch of piped in tracks.
Holy shit, they pulled it off!! Man, I wish I could see Devin live at least once in my life. The live band he has now is unbelievable as well! Lucky those who get to witness that. Also, I'm kind of scared of seeing Che for a long period of time. She's so stunning that I'm hopelessly falling in love with her!!!
What a great line up!!! I didn, t know Morgan could do those metalstuff, I knew his fusionjazz/free side...The whole band is killer!!!! Cheers, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex- Epica.
Morgan can do anything !! Jazz, Drum & Bass, Fusion, the famous Frank Zappa insane song named "The Black Page" ;), or Djent : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BdiE__E4kcQ.html
Wow!! Weird hearing how stripped back everything sounds. Morgan is a fun drummer to hear & watch. The band needs time to develop live chemistry but this kinda thing will be good for Devin going into the future i think!
What is that weird ass guitar that the guy in front of the quire is playing. It looks like hes tapping on it and playing with his fingers. Its not a champman stick or a warr guitar so what is it?
@@beto1580 Okay but wasn't he being solo since Strapping Young Lad if I may say ? Okay, so what you are saying is that it's yet another project of his.
From what I can see, Ågren is using a digital kit pad to play certain bass drum hits with his hands! Figures. Also, I believe Townsend said there won't be a click for these gigs which could explain why they don't sound as tight as the DTP :)
Thank you. I thought I was the only one with that opinion. I was expecting blast beats. Like... Twice the speed on the snare. If this is Morgan Ågren, he must be drunk as fuck, because he is a beast!
@@P0LYBiUS7 I don't get it. Explain. I've just listened to them bakc to back. They don't sound that different so what is the difference? I'm no drummer by the way. But they both sound equally as fast? help us out.
