----------
Canadian heavy music artist Devin Townsend has recently announced the release of his forthcoming new album ‘EMPATH’ for the 29th March 2019.
He also revealed that in the lead up to the album’s release, Devin will walk fans through how Empath came together with a series of documentary episodes recorded as phone conversations during the course of the albums recording.
Devin previously commented:
“Hello everybody, this is Devin Townsend and I would like to formally announce that after almost a year and a half of working, I have finished Empath. Now this record has taken me down a lot of very interesting psychological and technical avenues and the process was documented from the very get-go by a series of documentary videos that I have done, that outline everything from the gestation of the idea to the actualisation of it, through all the existential ups and downs that went on. As such this record is different to any record that I have released thus far, and trying to get people on board for what it is versus what it isn’t, I think needs to be dealt with in a different way. Stay tuned for the making of Empath - the video series.”
Over the past few years, the success that Devin has slowly worked for has fortunately come with the power to control his own creative destiny. The recent successes with the DVD from a sold-out Royal Albert hall, or his 2012 ‘Retinal Circus’, or last year’s ‘Ocean Machine’ live DVD with the Orchestra and Choir of State Opera Plovdiv has put him in a position where with the new album ‘EMPATH’, he will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification.
On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.
Joining Devin on this album is Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally as music director, as well as Morgan Ågren (Mats And Morgan, Frank Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal), Anup Sastry (Monuments, Periphery), Samus Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Abigail Williams), Nathan Navarro, Elliot Desagnes, Steve Vai, Chad Kroeger, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ché Aimee Dorval, Ryan Dhale and the Elektra Women’s Choir.
A bold statement with massive production values and dynamic, uncompromised musicality. This is a statement about not only pursuing creative freedom in a conservative scene, but also trying to show that heavy music is truly a valid musical tool.

I'm disabled, and my back pay is coming in April. First day I'm ordering Retinal Circus, Royal Albert Hall, By a Thread and Plvdiv. I can't wait to hear Empath! It's scary for those of us who loved DTP so much. But after hearing Genesis, I was so different on a lot of levels I discovered you late (in my 50s) and your music is the soundtrack of my life. I look for DT reaction videos every day. All I can say is Thank You, Devin for creating unique never know what to expect the next brilliant artistic album child is I'm no longer scared I'm like a kid waiting for Disneyland to open. Love you, brother!

I saw Mike with Satriani as part of the G3 & Aristocrats tour literally like 5 m from me. One of the best experiences. With all the talents on stage he got almost unnoticed, while playing hammer-on/pull-offs with one hand and keyboard with the other. Unreal skills and still so humble. Admirable guy.

zappa makes a lot of sense, trust me... i still don't really comprehend this album and I#m not sure how much i like it, but this is an important album, a album that will spark controversies (I've literally seen it getting slaughtered verbally and praised as the best new thing since pizza). I'm glad devy got this off his chest and goes his way uncomprimisingly. we need more artists with balls to do something different, not adhere to their preconceived notions or those of the fans and listeners.

Genesis is anticlimactic. The album has caused great expectations, but that cheesy annoying kiddie chorus in Genesis makes me wonder whether the album will have the kind of emotional power and depth of Ocean Machine or Accelerated Evolution, or whether it will be too superficial and plastic, trying to cover too much ground stylistically rather than offer truly top-notch song-writing. Genesis is playful and colourful, but in a way that evokes some of the worst tracks off the hit-and-miss Epicloud and the overrated Deconstruction, it's like a chewing-gum with many flavours but whose taste wears off quickly. Hopefully the rest of Empath will be less child-like and a bit more dramatic in the best Devin Townsend tradition. If not, then The Moth might prove to be that next great album.

@SpectralOpposites

You can write however much you like in a youtube-comment about what you feel, but in the end, musical taste is subjective. I personally love every second of Epicloud and think Deconstruction deserve more credit than it gets and is an underrated album. Empath does not need to be anything other then what Devin desires to express at this point in his life, take it or leave it.

@Philip Arbon But... Genesis is all about nostalgia. You know, rehashed shticks and such. It offers very little new. Nearly every section reminds me of something he'd done before. Wasn't the whole point of Empath for Devin to explore something new finally? The album as a whole may do that - we shall hear it in a few weeks - but Genesis itself is completely contrary to exploring new territory. Just because it has 30 different styles doesn't make it original, it just makes the song convoluted. And creating convoluted music doesn't take genius, creating great SONGS does. As for the inner child New Age nonsense, I very much enjoy Mr Bungle and many other playful bands that don't take themselves seriously, and even Muppet Show albums from the 70s. So much for that theory... Regarding "artistic integrity", I'm very selfish that way. I'd rather Townsend made an album he hates that I love, than the opposite. (For example Physicist which I love, he hates, and Ki which he loves and I hate.) I am not a fanboy, I am a music fan. There is a huge difference. Townsend's happiness is all well and fine, I hope he is always happy doing whatever he likes, but I place priority on mine. When he moaned about having to "phone in" Sky Blue, I wasn't bothered, because the end-result is so great. On the other hand, he had hyped COC and Ki, yet those albums are just mediocre. You choose to go by his taste, I choose to go by mine. If you trust Devin's ears more than your own, that's your choice, but it's a fanboy choice. Artistic integrity, which Devin has in spades, usually brings in the best/better results, but not always. Devin is a rare example of a musician who sometimes makes his best music when "pressured" to do something his fans want. When he goes out of his way to explore something completely different, he rarely succeeds. COC, Ki and Ghost are all disappointing albums overall. So yeah, don't seek for a career in psychology, your instincts are poor and your logic child-like. You figured you had me figured out, but clearly you failed to read between the lines as well as the lines themselves. Perhaps you need to focus more on your inner adult.
@tanyshasmith4617
@tanyshasmith4617 5 лет назад
@@Qwerty-ks8dn I considered Genesis as the prologue that Devin described it as. So to me it was telling the beginning of the story to the album and within this was the entirety of Devin's career as previous. I felt the song was taking me on a ride, at which the end of both will be the beginning of something bright and new.
