I agree. Most people seem to consider the Royal Albert version the best, but this version to me sounds much richer vocal wise. Devin's vocal timbre changed considerably after starting the DTP due to age, but in this show it sounds like a blend of those two eras. I mean come on, listen to the "You are" line at 6:41, he doesn't sing it that way anymore, with that kind of grit. Its awesome
Osoch i came to say the exact thing with almost the same words haha. I have always seen the “ you are “ part as an example of the grit he used to have , which adds a lot more to the performance than his actual óperistic vocal style .
@@xobrasxx Exactly. His opera style is very good no doubt, and it does work flawlessly in many songs. However I always felt Deadhead very raw in emotion, a painful song, and IMO singing it in opera style makes it too polished, I feel it doesn't transmit that emotion as well
I am aware that Devin is never gonna read this because this isn't even his official channel, but... i need to let this out. Thank you Devin. You and your music mean so much to me, i've been trying so hard to feel better throughout the past year and nothing seems to help except for your music. I have never heard something that affects me in this way before, nothing at all, and i've browsed through every reddit discussion and read every snob comment telling me that X band is better, Y band is more technical, Z band is more thoughtful... the truth is that you can't quantify/measure feelings, especially when they are this intense and... just irrational. I don't want something cerebral, calculated, deliberately convoluted... i want something sincere, genuine, and simple, and your music, to me, has always been predicated on such traits, at least your early catalogue, in spite of all of the chaos, the madness, the anger, the fear, the ugliness... there is still an overarching emotional truth to all of them.
+canoestothemoon He is literally the only vocalist I know of, especially within the harsher side of metal, that has gotten BETTER with age. I think it has to do with an excellent technique combined with cleaner living since he gave up the drugs/alcohol/smoking. It's ridiculous how insane he has gotten, even since this show.
I don't want to be a bummer but I feel like his voice has some melodyne on it in this vid, raw cellphone vids of this gig weren't as godly as this is :(
Cell phone mics are horrible at picking up loud music properly. Very few raw cellphone videos of live shows are even decent sounding. The best are all acoustic. Tuska is LOUD, overwhelms cell phones completely.
I don't usually post comments on videos, but i need in this one. I met this God Sir with Soilwork, and, one day, i found this video from Tuska. It was amazing. I spent this whole week listening to his live stuff. And this song, plus Supercrush and Numbered are just art. Fucking art. He is a god. No doubt about it.
Oh my fucking god! This version sounds SO good! Like the version from years ago!! HIS VOICE TRANSCENDS SPACE AND TIME ITSELF! Look at how he summons those emotions! This has ALWAYS been my favorite song of his since the first time I heard it.
This just might be the greatest performance of any song ever recorded. I'm a huge Devin fan, so I'm pretty biased, but there's something captured in this performance that just screams something like beauty, or peace, or something like that. I dunno, but I've listened to this song for years of my life and it always has the same impact.
It's been a week since I discovered Devin Townsend. Now I can't listen to anything else. I was going to see BTBAM and DTP because of BTBAM, but now I'm super hyped about seeing this fine gentleman live. I hope he plays this song at the (Dallas) show. :)
I've seen him live 3 times in the past 2 years. He's so fantastic. The best live show that I've ever seen (aside from local bands; always great to see your buds rocking out!)
Last time DT played a show here, i went with a buddy who is a huge Strapping fan and otherwise pretty much listens to death metal ONLY. So when i introduced him to the DTP records i expected the worst from him but i called him up and asked him what he thought and he was like "this is amazing, this stuff is brilliant!!!" And i said "But it's not death metal" and he said "It's fucking Devin Townsend, and thats all that matters". :D
Cool. When Devin screams @ 6:43 he suddenly looks like Bruce Willis for a moment. Now you know that you are a badass singer, when you can change into Bruce Willis while you're singing!!! :)
ACTUAL ANSWER: Strapping is done with. While Devin was 95% the driving force behind that project, it was a band with 4 members who were equally essential to it's existence. Hardly the same as the "solo" work that Dev has been putting out for years and years, whether it be under his name alone, The Devin Townsend Band or Devin Townsend Project. Seeing a group perform a Strapping song other than the 4 members who made up SYL would be just silly. Although, Dev has played an acoustic ver. of "Love".
Seen Devin twice, both times very different, always so metal, always so funny, always so warm atmosphere when Dev is onstage! If i'd have to pick that one guy who is the no.1 man/woman in the whole music industry, it would be Mr. Townsend, a true genious in music, singing and playing guitar, and a very nice guy overall, those two things usually never come hand to hand!
@blackroseimmortal he played keys for Strapping Young Lad's album Alien as a session musician and then Devin like him so much they've been playing music together ever since :D
You will do man, seen him four times and all of them were definitely some of the best shows iv'e ever seen, best front man ever in my opinion. I know i will definitely die happy from seeing this fine specimen of a man lol
this performance is like night in day compared to the synchestra dvd. it's ten times the epicness plus devin's voice has improved a lot since those days
Yeah bro u right! Been trying to find this again for a long time now. As far as I remember it was posted on the Peavey RU-vid channel, but for some reason we can't find it anymore 😢
I saw him at Soundwave along with Gojira, Meshuggah, Mastodon and Slipknot. My bucket list was ticked off in that one day!! Except for Tool... must see Tool.
