Devo (/ˈdiːvoʊ/, originally /diːˈvoʊ/)[4] is an American rock band formed in 1972, consisting of members from Kent and Akron, Ohio. The classic line-up of the band included two sets of brothers, the Mothersbaughs (Mark and Bob) and the Casales (Gerald and Bob), along with Alan Myers. The band had a No. 14 Billboard chart hit in 1980 with the single "Whip It", and has maintained a cult following throughout its existence.
Devo's style, over time, has shifted between punk, art rock, post-punk and new wave.

I remember seeing them on SNL back in 1978 when I was 15 y/o and they blew me away with their performance and to this day, I’m still a huge DEVO fan and I have all LPs/CDs, VHS tapes, Laserdiscs, and now DVDs. I wasn’t into Punk, but the Post-Punk/New Wave was the future… Back then. 🙂

Devo's performance on Saturday Night Live was so fucking tight, the choreography was spot on.
@AllenKnutson
@AllenKnutson Год назад
Indeed. It's a shame that in this upload, because of the panning, so little of the choreography can be seen. OTOH all of the more faithful uploads have been blocked (by NBC, I presume) so this is all we get at the moment.

Was perhaps one of the best sounding and tightest performances in their history. Most bands had horrible mixes, and alot of performances were (ahem) less than stellar...

I actually genuinely like the way this video moves and jerks around. I can’t however, figure out how to replicate this...
@Vox_Rhododendron
@Vox_Rhododendron 10 месяцев назад
Not to necropost, but you could probably do it by playing the video in a window, screen recording it, then jerking the window around with your cursor and then cropping everything beyond the edge of the window out.

Prerecord the video to a track at half speed. Have the players and cameras make jerky movements. Play back the video at double speed and perform the audio live to it. The studio audience sees and hears the live band, the TVs audience sees the video with live music.

hmmm... i'm somewhat confused by your comment and your avatar. i found it amusing because favorite bands/songs in my life come and go but, for some reason, i can listen to kiss and devo again and again. i've been fans of them since '78 and '81, respectively. i listened to 'rock and roll over' 2 days ago, and devo, well, now. i don't tell that to too many people because why bother. it's a rare fan combo and i only knew 1 person like that. so, if you are one of those types of fans, don't fuck around - be my friend. lol. just kidding. so, wassup?

ScotSpeed this was a cool comment I was expecting a juvenile stab at hostility at the end but you showed class and I want to give you props. I think the name of this band sums up what they were trying to do, taking a rock standard and dragging it into a cacophonous rhythm with an admittedly kick ASS bass line, tear the song down, devolve it. Deconstruct. I'm 48 so I dug them first time around too. It's like 0450 so I'm just listening to some old gems. Kiss is a good idea. I was made for lovin you! Ha j/k but they did the "conscious sellout" thing WAY before U2 thought they were clever. Peace from tha LBC ✌️

shiprek2011 ha. what's poppining? i, too, be in cali. so cal to be exact. san diego, to be exacter. i just turned 46 this november, fellow quadragenarian. they say 46 is the new 21, but 48 is still, well, 48. _i kid, sir._ yeah, about kiss, longtime fan. the last album i bought was 'creatures of the night' - it sucked, just like the 2 albums before it (imo). i'll listen up to kiss alive 2, maybe 1 or 2 songs after that album were ok. but, who fucking cares, right? i mean, kiss? please. devo's the shiznit. last album was 'shout'. are you a devotee, or a passer by? so, lbc, eh? you like rap? and _why_ are you awake? hmmm?

@@SuperScottCrawford Sorry, even 2 years ago, you were wrong. Later albums include the set Pioneers Who Were Scalped, Now it Can Be Told, Smooth Noodle Maps, Live: The Mongoloid Years, and Something For Everybody. I left out Greatest Hits and Greatest Misses, sorry. Don't forget the surf album Ptwang (I am pretty sure I don't have an accurate spelling here, I don't have the album in front of me), performed as The Wipeouters, and Gerry did an album as Jihad Gerry which I believe was backed up by the rest of the band per their roster at the time. There's also Dev2.0, some loose tunes unattached to any albums, and Mark has done a lot of soundtracks for movies and TV and other projects. There's more, but my point is made, the horse is dead, I've beaten it enough.

@Mitsywolfe

Maybe. For me, it’s hitting the notes accurately, but messing with the tempo, draining all of the swagger and groove out and replacing it with a robotic, clanking, undanceable beat. Draining all of the sex out of a Stones song is hilarious, yet thought provoking; and to my mind this has always been the definitive example of what it means to cover a song in your own style.
