Great video Tim, really good review. Can't beat that type of sander for that type of job. I also have a small portable sandblaster that works great too. It's nothing special, Harbor Freight model, but on a small job it gets it done. Keep up the good work!

Hey buddy, GREAT JOB. I googled this product because I too was interested in the design. I bought one yesterday in a local pawn shop that I frequent because they only buy CLEAN higher-end tools. So every tool they have is near new condition and works well. So, I needed to sand a school bus roof for a customer who tried to paint it herself and she didn't sand or prime it properly, and she probably used the wrong paint as well (Home Depot Behr) and just rolled it on. Needless to say it looked great for about a year then it all started chipping off. So she called me to strip it and repaint it. (I'm a sign guy mind you but have painted many bldgs etc) . Never done any automotive painting but have several friends in the sign biz who have. So I've seen the process. Lots of work and expensive paint and you need a proper shop and prep work etc. to do all that. Not my cup of tea. Not set up for all that. Anyways, she said she couldn't afford to do the whole bus top to bottom again, just the roof, and tgat she couldn't afford to take it to an automotive paint shop. So I said I'd try to tackle it for her since she was already a good customer of mine. At first I thought about power washing it down to the metal at a local truck wash place that has a really high powered pressure washer. Not to expensive and MUCH FASTER and MUCH EASIER (safer) to do. But then I also got 2 tree trucks I had to wrap and they had some shallow rusty scratches on the sides from branches that scrwped the body. So I figured I check the pawn shops first, and low and behold I saw the corded DeWalt 401DS for like 49 bucks and it was really clean looking with very little wear. At first sight I thought for sure it was a buffing tool of some sort because of the drill-like grip, circular disc, and handle attach. Glad I looked closer at it and tested it out. Never saw anything like that in a sander before I'm 57 and been buying tools my whole adult life. tested it out on the store and the rpms were off the charts compared to the palm vibrating sanders and other orbital palm sanders I've used. (You are right about the fatigue and awkward ergo-dynamics of those btw) . So I coupled the purchase with a mini Craftsman 6" chainsaw (also a very cool tool) forc110. bucks out the door (tax Incl). It was brand new also. Probably never used. Also a cool designed product. I loved the tips you put in the video and the sandpaper and being careful neal sharp corners etc., and rate at which it consumes those paper discs etc. Also liked the tip about tilting it at a very slight angle and letting the motor do the work by not pressing down so hard etc. VERY USEFUL INFO. I'M 100% cordless on most product I buy (new or used). But on angle grinders, sanders and stuff where you need HIGH POWER and a constant high-speed power flow for an extended period of time, I will opt for the corded tool aa to not burn up the brushes or motors in the cordless stuff. I know better. I do usexa cordless mini mitre saw though which I absolutely LOVE and picked up for a hundred bucks one day in a pawn shop. Craftsman and also BRAND NEW looking. I always Google everything to read the user reviews first and they said it was a GREAT VALUE and WORKED REALLY WELL compared to the higher end saws which can range from 250-400 new. The mini 4¾" was are hard to find new. Any way sometimes I'll buy tools just because I need the extra battery(ies). Those cost as much as or MORE sometimes, than the tools themselves. Lol. I know y'all all know this. Lol Anyways, so far I've only tested it on wood in my shop just to get a feel for it and it's power etc. Keep in mind it was missing the handle and dust cover when I got it (8.00 from DeWalt) so I can't fully appreciate the control yet....BUT....the power and light weight and CONFORT LEVEL of the grip is OFF THE CHARTS. So, I will drop another comment after the real field test I do signs and wraps on big trucks etc.) and get back to you on the rust removal on the tree trucks and the school bus roof (which is BIG and LONG and WIDE 😱 compared to that tank you did). So it'll be a GREAT TEST for it. Lol. 😉👍👌 Perfect tool I needed. I also just got a FREE Ryobi palm sander after buying the 2-pack 4ah battery kit with charger. Lol. Home 'Despot' (sic) is having their Christmas/Black Friday sale now. So I'm sure they'll sell out quick. Heads up for all my contractor work horsie peeps out there. GO NOW! I inquired about the DeWalt dust cover and pad for the corded sander also. It's a bit more. Like 60bucks or something. I Think I'll pass on that for now. I will test out the used one I bought like you did (minus the dust shroud for now. All your advice was SO USEFUL re: using a blower etc. and the type(2) of paper (grit) etc. Can't wait to test it in the field tomorrow on the tree trucks before I wrap them. Maybe I can use it on the old vinyl letters to. Save me a boatload of time. They are old letters that have been on awhile. Whole truck has really worn paint so scuffing it won't matter anyway, and it's all getting wrapped. Lol. So we shall see how many uses I can get out of this COOL TOOL! I can live with the cord, and the added power is WHAT I NEED in this type of tool. AWESOME JOB DEWALT. Y'all continue to impress me. 5 STARS from me so far on this design, it's power, weight and usefulness. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👌👍😉

If you think that DeWalt is good you should try the Makita 5" I have both and a Makita run circles around the DeWalt

Eastwood's contour tool would work well for that tank. I just got the Dewalt sander.. I use a long hose hooked up to my small shop vacuum

You should have used paint stripper first scrap most of the layers off then sand it it will save you money.

Choosing this over the makita, because of the variable speed feature. Is this a circular motion like an angle grinder or random orbital?

Would it be too aggressive for wood or can it be slowed down enough to cut paint on wood? Thanks

You should have used a paint stripper first and after scraping a couple layers off finish everything up with sandpaper

In my experience in sanding car paint with this machine, the sandpaper clogs up immediately.

How do you replace pad?

@TOOLMANTIMSWORKSHOP Год назад
I don’t have this one anymore but I’m pretty sure there are screws up inside the dust holes if you look up into the Velcro that you can loosen and then remove the whole pad
