-----------------------------------------------------------------
TheDEWALT FlexVolt 60-Volt 17" Brushless Attachment Capable String Trimmer comes in a kit with the 9Ah battery (DCST972X1)or as a bare tool(DCST972b). This powerhead is capable of tackling tough overgrowth with a string trimmer or brush cutter and withstanding heavy-duty use with an edger. The universal attachment capability allows you to connect additional DEWALT add-ons already on the market. This is a 60V Power Head that only uses the FlexVolt battery. This battery is backward compatible to work with 20V DEWALT tools and will help some tools gain extra power over smaller Amp Hour batteries.
So why a DEWALT, Milwaukee, or Makita trimmer over an EGO, Greenworks, or Echo? This slight change in my recommendation is because we get questions daily on why my 1/2" high torque impact wrench won't remove a lug nut, or why my circular saw won't cut a 2x10. It is because you cannot use a 2Ah battery on a heavy-duty tool. If people would invest in the OPE of a tool brand and get the larger batteries, they would have a better experience. ALSO, when you have a battery fail that is not under warranty, they are incredibly expensive to replace. Some EGO batteries are north of $300 for a battery. To be fair, a DEWALT FlexVolt is not far behind them in price, but you can use the DEWALT battery on a hundred or so other tools. When you need to purchase a new battery, at least you have multiple other tools you can use it with and possibly even upgrade another tool to a new, more powerful one.
I am not trying to say that dedicated OPE platforms do not perform well. In some cases, I would recommend people buy battery OPE tools as a stand-alone. If you are a person who loves their lawn and wants a perfect cut and feel to using a certain OPE battery-operated tool, then I would most likely say Toro would be a great place to grab a battery lawnmower even though the cost of ownership including its limited use for batteries. But that mower will fit that need for the person.
Many people do not own a large number of tools or even have the need. But if you ever need a drill, impact driver, or saw and you already have a tool company battery, that purchase will be much less expensive.

To clarify a few items: The short runtime of 9 minutes was 100% in tall thick grass and does not represent normal use. This string trimmer spins Counter-Clockwise like many gas units. The charger that comes with this kit is a standard charger and it is slow at charging. This should have come with a 12Ah battery and it will easily push 35 minutes of normal use on that battery. 17" swath might be too large for some for home use and dropping to 15" will greatly increase runtime.

One of the biggest complaints I have with my dewalt 20v max trimmer is the amount of debris thrown at me. I always thought it was because of the spin direction and small deflector.

I have the 20 volt dedicated DeWalt string trimmer with the same high/low switch that's been out for a few years for around $120 without battery. I use a 5Amp Hour 20V battery and it only lasts about 7 minutes on the high setting. If you're doing more than one 10,000 sq ft lawn you will need another battery or wait 90 minutes until it recharges. I would only recommend buying DeWalt string trimmers only if you already have DeWalt batteries at home and need a string trimmer for home use.

I purchased this about a month ago. I use my Ryobi edger attachment and my Ryobi brush cutter attachment on this head. It has done really well with both of them. Using the nine amp hour battery I can trim, edge, and brush cut my entire average-sized suburban yard and still have more than half a battery left. Under normal circumstances the battery does pretty well.I already had Dewalt tools so this fit into my collection perfectly, but I’m glad I did because I enjoy this trimmer a lot.

Have been using this trimmer for a couple weeks in a professional setting at a 180 acre sports complex. I currently have 2 9ah batteries and will be purchasing a third. Absolutely phenomenal for everything other than a few very large hills which I use a Stihl FS130r for. Also have a Milwaukee 2725 trimmer which I rarely use because the battery life is garbage. Have the Ryobi 40v HP trimmer as well, really great design and a joy to use but definitely prefer the Dewalt.

Just to let everyone know, it does take other companies attachments. I have all of the MTD products marketed for Troybilt’s attachment capable trimmer (trimmer head, edger head, brush cutter, hedge trimmer, pole saw, etc) and they all work. They fit completely in the hole and have a square shaft connection. I’ve even seen someone put a Poulan Pro pole saw attachment on it and it worked as well. Great video. I’ve been waiting for someone to review this. This thing definitely works well. If you don’t have this battery platform already though, maybe not the tool for you. I have Dewalt battery powered rotary hammers, miter saws, impacts, drills, everything, so it only makes sense to buy this for the battery alone. But the trimmer works perfectly. Super powerful.

Any chance the Stihl attachments work with this? I currently have the older 60V string trimmer and also a full kit of Stihl attachments....hate to buy all the attachments again - but would be interested if those attachments would fit as there are times it would be handy to have hedge trimmer and pole saw going at the same time
@CardinalVibes
@CardinalVibes 3 года назад
@@perper17 That, I cannot confirm or deny good sir. I think there are only two different types of attachments for these types of power head systems. I believe the difference is the diameter of the pole that houses the shaft itself. I just went and googled some pictures of the Stihl attachments and they look like they would work. They have a square shaft for starters. I would think it would work. The pole diameter “looks” to be the same, but I honestly don’t know. If you aren’t too concerned with taking a trip to possibly return it to, I would try it and if it just doesn’t work out, you can always just return the Dewalt. These attachments are typically very universal though from what I’ve seen myself.

@@CardinalVibes thanks for the input. I’ve had my eye on these things and I go so long between using certain tools I gravitate to the battery stuff so much faster than getting the gas equipment fired up. @@perper17 Definitely. I switched not only because I’m already on that battery platform, but also because I no longer need a gas can, have to buy gas, have to buy 2 cycle oil, mix the stuff, clean the carb, worry if the fuel has been in there too long, etc etc etc. this thing is a beast. I use it on 6 yards a week (I only cut on one day), and as long as I have batteries (which it does drain after a yard and a half/2 yards), it goes and goes with tons of power and no problems (after 2 months). No problem for the info though. Hopefully it works for you. Let me know if it does.

Yesterday, I used my 40V Ryobi attachment-capable carbon shaft trimmer and got over an hour actual time on a 5Ah battery. I have an extremely large grass area around my house, buildings and 20+ trees as well as 2 large areas that need trimming as the mower can't get there. It runs on Low and I feather the speed as Full speed isn't necessary or I need to protect my siding and small bushes. In tall grass like you had, it was full speed on Low and it ate that grass and weeds right up. Did need to use another battery for a further 10 minutes or so to fully finish. I find the slower rpm stops me getting covered in debris like I did with my old gas trimmer. I thought about the DeWalt, but the Ryobi seemed a better value and had good battery runtime. I have used it with a pole saw attachment and that worked well too. I'll have to measure the total area as that would be interesting to know! I was really impressed.

@@wildbill23c I have both Dewalt 20V and Ryobi tools. Not all DeWalt products are the best. Ryobi is more consistent and certainly a more attractive price. Today, I trimmed the ditch banks in front of my property and I ran at pretty much full speed on Low and got around 45 mins of trim runtime. I basically didn't stop. My 4Ah battery died with just 3ft left! I should have used the 5Ah, but I like to alternate the batteries. I'll certainly be trimming a lot more this season! So easy to just attach the battery and go. The trimmer is very light too. I was one-handed trimming on the deepest part with no problem.

I have this unit and am very happy with it. Full power through thick grass does not represent most of my usage. I’m just trimming around my house, trailers, etc and along my fence line. A quick maintenance trim after mowing takes about 15 minutes, and still leaves me with three lights on the fuel gage. Even doing my 400ft of ditch is no big deal if I let it grow for a few weeks. I got the Trimmer Plus brush cutter attachment, and that works well with this unit as well. I have several acres of woods that I need to keep at bay. That said, if I stay on top of things, I don’t need to be out with the brush cutter for more than 15 - 20 minutes either. So again, run time is no issue.

I’m a diehard Milwaukee guy, but I’ll be the first to admit that their M18 Fuel string trimmer (newest version) doesn’t hold a candle light to the power of dewalts string trimmer. With a 12 amp hour battery I was able to trim about 75% of my .75 acre property with one battery and that includes about 800’ of fence line. So longevity was there for that platform, but power was definitely something to be sought for.

I purchased this last year when the universal system first came out. My previous one was stolen (not a universal). Great machine. I am impressed with the Flex Volt system. I have several Flex Volt tools, circular saw, track saw, leaf blower, even a compressor. Over time it is not hard to collect several batteries, so I have little sympathy for those who complain about the run time. I enjoy the power. Will never go back to gas, power does not make up for the hassle. Now a year later I am just a frustrated trying to find the DeWalt attachments. I would like a pole saw and articulating hedge trimmer. I'm surprised to hear that other brands, Ryobi, will fit. Really? Are you all talking about their 2 cycle line? I may look into that. I believe that when it comes to cordless electric your point about "tool brand"' is spot on. Batteries, the value of which come close to the cost of the entire mower kit and which can be used in so may other tools. So I'm now invested in the Dewalt brand. It's genius marketing. Echo attachments work too BUT the rpms Dewalt power head has a lot lower than rpms from Echo Pas power head. Just keep that in mind. The trimmer attachment for example work ok on high full throttle but not nearly as well as Echo. One more thing: Dewalt power head has internal protection built it so when you hit some thick stuff with the trimmer it stalls and you need to depress and press trigger again which is annoying. Trimming hedges will be ok. Love using this string trimmer commercially, I just keep two 9ah (3ah) batteries in the truck - one on a charger. Nice review and I appreciate the take on batteries. Really, I have two battery "families;" my DeWalt tools and my EGO yard tools. However, I have far more invested in my yard tools with the power head and associated tools: hedge trimmer, pole saw, extension pole and edger, as well as a dedicated trimmer, hedger, blower, and mower. I bought each with the battery included and I have about 10 batteries now - especially after I bought the 3000 watt generator with the associated batteries. I could but every DeWalt tool I want and not have the battery capacity of my current EGO ecosystem, so to speak. I still buy a DeWalt tool when I find the need for a new tool, but, for the yard, I'm already with EGO. Oh, I'll have to get up a vid of the EGO trimmer trigger and send it to you next week - it's just like gas in my estimation. But, for someone that doesn't have a platform, EGO is great...I have only used one of their mowers and was impressed with it, and if I didn't already have lawn/garden equipment it would be a great choice, but again I have several Dewalt batteries so I'd go with Dewalt to avoid starting another platform and buying different batteries HAHA!!

This powerhead can connect to my old trimmer attachment from my gas powered Toro which had a universal fitting. The trigger isn't twitchy like the Milwaukee's. I like the ability to use universal attachments, but would probably go for the DeWALT ones although they aren't readily available yet. The other universal attachment offerings by Ryobi and Trimmer plus don't seem to match the attachments available from Milwaukee or EGO. As you mentioned in your mower review, not sure why DeWALT does not include some type of fast charger. These OPE's are high drain devices. Would be nice to have a charger that could charge the included 9ah FV in less than 3 hours.

So I bought one of these yesterday. I am in Florida and have a bunch of 3 to 4 foot sawgrass to trim. It jammed in the first 30 seconds as the saw grass wrapped around in the gap between head and the end of the machine. I tried a couple of time but it didn't like my sawgrass. I was contemplating returning it but went ot today to do other trimming. The original line was gone before the battery was half dead. I put in some line I had for my old Stihl. IT CUT SO MUCH BETTER!!!. I tried it on the sawgrass and it now cut it no problem. It is pretty amazing for a cordless trimmer but just throw out the line that comes with it. Why would Dewalt make such an awesome tool and hobble its performance with crap line ? Made for a bad first impression . Thankfully I got to see its true colors with good line.

Typical me. I buy the 60v trimmer with the motor at the head. After every use I vacuum the head since I store the trimmer next to my shop vac. The motor has to be near the battery. If not then you would have to buy expensive attachments b/c they would need their own motors. Dewalt could do this , but then you would be buying $200-$250 attachments. Basically it would be a whole tool, minis the battery holder and trigger.

Do these people not understand what variable speed is? Is this how they drive their cars? Cordless drills are used this way and to be honest, they look like amateurs. Show me you dont know what youre doing without saying it. These are the same people that complain about run time. If you drove a Honda like that, youd get 3mpg. Cars driven at constant speed see the most efficiency, everything else is the same. Whether cordless or Gas, why use more power than you need? Why pulse a trigger when 50% constant will do. Rant over, great video especially about the stepped trigger. Its weird Dewalt would do this, wish they would explain it as none of their other tools are like that.

So.... yes, it's a good tool. At 6 am this morning, I was on the phone with DeWalt reps (yes plural) trying to ask a VERY simple question. It never really got answered. We own this trimmer. My husband is 6'3". I am 5'2". Just look at the part of your video at how freaking long it is! Firstly, there is no harness or place to put one. My sweet guy rigged up a harness for me but it didn't solve my problem. It is so long and I'm so short, I have to bend my back backwards as to not dig too deep into the grass. I can only do about 20 minutes, max using it. He does the heavy chores and I do the smaller stuff like weed whipping. Before you think I'm a pansy, I'm 68 and own my own smaller deWalt chainsaw and not only limb our trees, but it is capable of cutting through smaller trees. I love to research before we buy. FYI, deWalt has practically no specs on their website. Unbelievable! Their customer service reps kept trying to sell me attachments because they couldn't understand my question of what is the shortest shaft weed trimmer made by deWalt. Went through 2 reps before they told me to go to black and decker. Ugh! I wanted to stay with this brand for obvious reasons. We have tons of tools that use those batteries. I had to do my own research by going on to Tractor Supply, who actually does have the specs I needed. DeWalt obviously doesn't think women do yard work. Ok, this is so long because I'm still heated from talking to the nitwits at deWalt this morning. I like your review. It's very thorough. However, you should warn short people that it will not work for them! Thank you!

Adjust the forward handle further tword the sting trimmer head and you will be able to use it without any issues.

I love mine as well. I use it on the farm cutting a lot of woody weeds and tall grass and it outperforms every gas model I've ever had. I have one question: Does the gearbox on the trimmer head need lubrication? I have noticed that it heats up pretty quickly. Anybody?

You reviewed the 970 model a few years back... with the motor in the head. As a Trimmer, not a Powerhead which do you feel operates better, the 970 or new 972. Is the 972 as long or shorter, looks shorter?

Would this trimmer replace gas? I understand you may need additional batteries, how is it for someone who’s 6’3 is bending over an issue? Thanks for a great video, I think you sold me on this one since I’m already pretty invested into the DeWALT platform but don’t have any flexvolt batteries yet

I am 6'3" and it was very comfortable. You just adjust the forward handle up a bit to fit your height.

The batteries are ridiculously priced for no more than what they are. Try and catch them on sale, when Dewalt has a tool sale in your area, that's the time to stock up. I think each battery is around $250 for the 12ah ones which would be what I'd go with for the trimmer. Not sure it would fit in my Dewalt 60V chainsaw though :(.

@@wildbill23c why are the batteries so expensive?? It’s more expensive than the tools themselves

@@parkerk7018 retail on the 12ah is crazy at 250. The 9ah retail 2 pack is 280. Thats the way to go if you cant wait for sales and such. Plus you will get 1 9ah with the kit for 300. I scored all my 12ah at essentially a price of 133 per battery with free tools that offered with it but you cant control when the deals come around. And if you dont wanna deal with the hassle of selling stuff

What is the blade arbor design on the brush cutter? I wanted to add a blade to the trimmer but dewalt uses a goofy square head above the string head.... what design is on the dewalt brush cutter head?

New subscriber here, and new owner of the DCST972X1 first off I was disappointed with the included manual but watching a RU-vid video set me straight. Also disappointed with the included charger, well over two hours to get full charge for the 9AH battery. I had a chance to use it, and to be clear my property is very small in the city and I was very impressive with the 17-in swath size. I was able to do front, rear and side yards in about an hour which includes raking, and I'm not really sure why you're getting such limited run time because after all that I only dropped one bar, out of three for battery level, this thing is a beast, and perfect for my application. Curious if anyone can share the confirmed compatible attachments?

Anything deemed universal will work. Many ryobi ones will work.
