Dexter is what Edward Cullen would be if he were a human back in the days when he used to hunt down criminals.
Sorry if the edit is kinda weird. I was trying to make the copyright claim go away, to no avail. I think it's a thing with this show when it comes to reaction videos.

Dexter's a high-functioning psychopath. He feels (or, at least, thinks he is) dead inside who thinks that Rita is perfect for him BECAUSE she's also damaged/traumatized and, consequently, isn't ready or capable of developing the deeper emotional and physical aspects of healthy relationships. Dex would never kill her - but he's also not equipped to deal with those emotional/physical aspects, either, so if Rita's going that way......

@@zackstoner4523 commentary I've read from psych experts seem to rely on feelings of remorse and ability to make emotional attachments rather than "born or made". And they refer to Dexter as a psychopath but that he doesn't fit that really because he does firm attachments and expresses some remorse - although you could say that his remorse is based on his decision to follow Harry's code which opposed his own drive and his remorse is about letting down Harry - who he has a strong connection to. You have to telegraph that its a fictional tv show, not a psychiatry textbook.

Fun to see someone react to Dexter. This used to be my favorite show of all time, back when it was still being run by the original showrunner and until Breaking Bad came around. However, after season four, at what most would consider the point where the show was at its absolute peak, both the showrunner and the head writer left. While the quality took an immediate nose-dive at that point the first four-season run is so exceptionally good that I still recommend anyone that considers watching this to do so. By the way, I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but we're about to get a "10 years later" limited series, looking into the world of "Dexter" once more, and the original showrunner is back at the helm. Don't look up any details of this new limited series, however. Just know that something is in the making and that it might be worth being optimistic about. Have fun watching Dexter. I still believe that what used to be my favorite show sort of allowed my new (and forever since) favorite show to become the phenomenon it ended up being. Before Dexter it wasn't really known that a massive audience could love and root for someone like him, a high-functioning sociopath and a serial-killer with a code. Part of me would like to think that he indirectly paved the way for Walter White and the outstanding character development he went through. :)

I would like to share a theory I believe is true. I think Dexter Morgan definitely has autism. Because it would all makes sense on how he acts and behaves, basically Harry Morgan messed up and misdiagnosed Dexter as a psychopath when he was young. As someone with autism myself I can easily say I've heard that I act like a robot, when really it's because I feel everything at once so my defense mechanism is to shut it down to deal with it. Also his need to kill as a adult is just routine and he can't skip it, because if he doesn't everything gets out of wack for him. Plus even in the very first season you can tell he feels emotions, because he clearly cares about Rita, Astor, Cody, and Debra. He gets all flustered and upset when she gets kidnapped by his brother, if Dexter was a true psychopath he wouldn't be upset. He would still try to find her but he wouldn't be so messed up by it and worried about what Brian would do to her. That's a great segway into the other part, we see perfect examples of psychopaths through both Brian Moser A.K.A. The Ice Truck Killer and Arthur Mitchell A.K.A. The Trinity Killer. They are perfect of faking emotions and blending in perfectly and seeming normal. A lot of people including Doakes and his best friend Angel Batista have said there is something off about him, how he doesn't act normal. I try to hide my autism through masking, to try and seem normal but it slips sometimes and people think I'm weird when really it's because they took a glimpse at my autism. Plus when Dexter accidentally killed the innocent man in season 4 he feels terrible about it. If he was truly a psychopath he wouldn't feel bad. You can also make the arrangement he has schizophrenia, considering he see's people that aren't there and talks with them. Anyway that's my theory, let me know your thoughts on whether you agree or disagree. Let's keep it civil and respect and understand each others opinions.

You can compare the character development of Dexter to Walter White of Breaking Bad. Both are changing even if in opposite directions. 9:22 Julia Stiles is in season 5 (my favorite) with showrunner Chip Johannessen replacing Clyde Phillips (bad move!). Dexter has The Code to guide him to not get caught. Debra is in a fog as to Dexter's extracurricular activities. By keeping a lid on this he means he must not let sex happen or she will see he is empty and void of emotion. Torture? He could slice them up before killing them, but he spares them the pain and just kills them then bags them into manageable pieces.

What you will find as you go along in the series is that Dexter is an unreliable narrator. He SAYS to himself (and us) that he has no feelings, but we can see that he really does. In the first episode we can at least see that he cares for Rita's kids and also for Deb, even though he says not, but he obviously does.

It's a credit to the show and the performances that audiences found themselves feeling protective of a serial killer. Dexter said "if I felt love for anyone it would be Deb"- he does love his sister, he just doesn't recognize it for what it is. And his emotional experience of ":love" is... different from how most of us feel it. But he does care for her, he supports her, he would never hurt her - isn't that love?

I think Harry believe that some people are born good or bad. As we are growing up we are being nurtured to be good (or at least not a danger). Dexter was born good but the way he was raised turned him into a killer, and if he wasn't a good kid he would be killing people rather than animals. And yes, people are more important than animals.

Someone will disagree with what I am about to say but I don't particularly care; dexter kind of was the good guy( in the beginning) concerning how he stuck to his father's code of going after bad people only; he could have ignored that and went after anyone he wanted at any time, he could have given in to the temptation of killing the security guard his brother had laid before him at the abandoned hospital or his sister at their childhood home but he chose to follow his father's rules despite his own issues with him because deep down he really didn't want to hurt innocent people and season after season was showing him striving to be a better person and was achieving that slowly especially with lumen in season 5 and brother sam in season 6, the show's 2 endings was I feel very disappointing because they wrote it and his character all wrong for he wouldn't have given in to his grief over the loss of his sister to where he would abandon his own son, sure he would be at his lowest for a minute but he would pull himself together and remember the promise he made to deb of how he would always be there for harrison no matter what and you can't sit there and convince me that a small town sheriff like his girlfriend angela would be able to bust a notorious killer like Dexter based on circumstantial evidence not to mention the tranquilizer formula is not the same; he never used kenimine on his targets he used M99 They deliberately wrote Dexter to be foolish and stupid in his actions, The writers should have continued adapting his story from the novels for they had tons of potential of doing and successfully pulling off a reverse breaking bad and the blacklist with the character, turning him into his very own sophisticated concierge of crime fighting with a vast network of resources at his disposal to help him hunt those that escape justice while keeping him 2 steps ahead of the people he works for in law enforcement who feels and views himself as the "the bad guy" that doesn't believe he can change but doesn't want to disappoint his father, his best friend angel, his wife, kids and sister by giving up trying with case after case and ultimate showdowns with the main antagonist of the season pushing him further and further down the path of being a honorable, righteous and semi-heroic individual with new blood being his swan song where he sacrifices himself to save his son, his son's girlfriend along with his own girlfriend from Kurt Caldwell, his son and the billionaire character they had in there that was serving as a red herring, have it where he had a connection to kurt and was involved somehow in covering up his secret of being the runaway killer and Dexter dying ending their threat once and for all thus earning his redemption which brings his story arc full circle with him ultimately breaking good, As for doakes the most annoying thing about him was his hypocritical attitude towards dexter when he tried to get him in trouble for just doing his job as a blood spatter specialist after he in an act of revenge shot dead a former death squad operative who was unarmed and tried to cover it up with lies which put his partner angel batista in a very uncomfortable situation of possibly turning him in to be arrested by IA until he was given a pass by the government, It should have been written and adapted according to the way it worked out in the books where they worked together to take down a cartel leader and doakes was severely maimed by the main antagonist dr danco to where he lost his legs and arms and tongue as a consequence for killing in cold blood that death squad operative who just so happened to be related to the villain, dexter tries to save him despite him knowing his secret but fails, he goes into a comma and dies later on in the 3rd season but Is revered as a hero cop and posthumously awarded a medal for risking his life to bring down dr danko who gets framed by Dexter as the Bay Harbor butcher, the same scenario can be applied but altered to the character Maria Laguerta, have the consequences of her actions in season 2 befall her in season 7 by having esme come back for revenge on laguerta for ruining her career by using her secret connections to the criminal underworld to frame her and make her look as if she's losing her mind like what laguerta did to her by sleeping with her boyfriend and have it where Debra is the one that tries to save her but fails with season 8 being the final season that deals with the fallout of that event and Dexter being the loving caring brother that he's been towards her trying to help her overcome the grief of laguerta's death all while dealing with the reign of terror from the brain surgeon! 🔥😁😉👍

yeah, interesting show. good conflicting messages of morality. interesting that his name is "dexter", which, in latin is "right" (opposite of left) and also has carried the connotation of "correct", "normal", and "proper" from the days when, if someone was left handed, they would be punished until they became right-handed ("dexterous"). in re-researching all that, to make sure i wasn't talking out my backside, i also read that the english name dexter is actually from "degstre", old english for "dyer". That one might be a reach, but maybe some relationship with blood spatter, dyer, making things look different than they are...i don't know. but i'm pretty sure about the first thing. good reaction!

This show is a cross section of three dimensional people and a true study to the question "what is human?" If you want to enjoy it, you'll have to drop your own assumptions and try very hard to put yourself in other people's mindset....really really put yourself in the shoes of damaged people who have nothing in common with you - cops, killers, fathers, brothers, politicians). Here are a few ideas on where to start: 1.Dexter's father and his "bad advice," - as a parent and a cop, what do you do when your SON is psychopath? Society will put him to death. What kind of father turns in his son to die? How do you resolve being a father and a cop when they are at odds? Right or wrong, the father tries to find a way - that's why the father seems pained and at odds. 2.Sgt Doakes - you cut out the best scene identifying his personality. Maybe you missed it. Dexter told us: Doakes is the BEST cop at the station because his intuition KNOWS that there is something sinister about Dexter. Doakes is the only one NOT fooled by Dexter. That's why Dexter is impressed : he is looking at truly great cop. Doakes is rude to him because...it's Doakes' job to be society's vicious guard dog against violent psychopaths like Dexter. He's the cop you want: not remotely fooled by a killer and definitely not polite to him. 3.Female police captain - she is very very true to her character: a political animal. She's mean to Debra because Deb is a political threat to her: another smart woman. who is white. She is killing her rival before she becomes too big. 4.Dexter is not turned on by blood or murder. (I read the book a few times). Dexter has NEED for murder, like everyone has a hunger for food. When we're hungry, we cant ignore it for too long before we'll do anything to feed the pangs. It's not sexual. He cannot help himself. Also, he doesnt have feelings. He's not loving to his sister or remorseful that he kills or even mad that Doakes is rude to him. If you watch the show, he literally does not understand feelings. He doesnt understand why his girlfriend was bothered by his touch. He even stopped asking himself why and went right back to thinking about cutting. Most importantly...he's trying to FAKE feelings to blend in among the rest of the world. But if you watch him...he does a GREAT job of faking being a good person: he brings donuts, remembers people's birthdays, he's charming, he helps his sister, he fights crime, he is even polite when Doakes is mean to him. Dexter (when he's not killing) is a better person than almost anyone I know personally. So the question is.. if you fake it long enough and well enough...are you still faking it or are you actually a good person? It's a question for us, the viewer, too: if we ask "what would a good person do?" and then do that for long enough for our entire lives, maybe...are we then a good person or still just trying to copy one? As an aside, as a killer...the cold hard fact is that Dexter performs the same executions the government does on Death Row...just faster. The end result is the same whether you are Dexter or me or you: 1.really bad guy is put to death 2."good guys" (Dexter, me or you) follow rules and fit in If you want to understand people and see things from a truly different point of view, this is the show for you. If you want to look for everyone to believe what you believe and act like you act...this show will be shocking to you.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. To me, it's a work of art.... similar to Frankenstein and Macbeth: a study in human nature if you read between the lines.

SO in your mind it is the same to kill a human child, then a mouse or squirrel or a rabbit? Also when did the show ever state Dexter tortured animals?
@MichalZismanReactions
@MichalZismanReactions 2 года назад
What makes you think I think killing a child is the same as killing a squirrel? I don't remember saying tortured, but if I did I probably meant that him killing the animals, which I believe was not as clean and easy like it is later in life, is a torture to the animal. I imagine the animal fighting trying to set itself free and Dexter making raw cuts. Also, I probably meant to compare the intent or motivation behind the actions not the actions themselves.
@zackstoner4523

@@MichalZismanReactions You probably meant? You do not know how you felt? You do know what you intended too say? The same logic unless you get a instant kill. You believe all hunters are tortures?
@MichalZismanReactions
@MichalZismanReactions 2 года назад
Oh boy... I described torturing in my previous reply, so no, hunting with an instant kill does not equal torturing by my logic. I say "probably" because I don't remember exactly how I phrased things. But basically, that's how I view things now.
@zackstoner4523

@@MichalZismanReactions Most kills during hunting are not instant. Unless you get a clean head shot. The average shot could kill quickly seconds, minutes or take hours even days.

Haven't watched, just a comment on the title: I do not disagree that their mentality could be similar, but I HEAVILY disagree on the presentation of the characters --> whether it being interesting is ham fisted or left up to interpretation by the audience. Dexter kills and it's not romanticized TO US by him being sparkly or having a ensemble of characters KNOWING WHO HE ACTUALLY IS and STILL worshiping him, AKA you are allowed not to like it. **Conversely**, Edward kills and it's ham fisted by 20 characters knowing what he is and still loving him, and him literally being a sparkle beauty vampire, that what he is doing is "cool". Dexter leaves the interpretation of what he's doing up to the audience WHO THEN 99% of the time thinks it's cool, while Twilight holds your hand and FORCIBLY WALKS you through that interpretation bc they can't handle you interpreting it any other way. Dexter = skillfully and confidently written so as to be remembered years later as a good show, Twilight = pretentious with a fragile ego cash grab aimed at pre-teens and angry/dissatisfied, aged-out, lonely women so is remembered as a joke. I admire Dexter, not bc he is a killer, but bc of his skill, focus, and pragmatism... whereas Edward devolves into a shameful, completely emotionally driven, "exposed wire". Not to mention Dexter accomplishes all this without immortality or magic... just human ingenuity like a middle class Batman that kills. Relatively everyone wants more **well written** Dexter, relatively no one wants more k.u.k werewolf love scenes with a girl he fantasized about ever since she was 5 minutes old... who is the daughter of the girl he actually wanted. Gross. Want to be clear: NOT ATTACKING YOU lol, I just didn't like him being compared to a flimsy, shallow, badly written, soft core wannabe
@MichalZismanReactions
@MichalZismanReactions 3 года назад
My title only referred to both of them having the desire to kill and then only going after bad people (that's what Edward did before he became "vegetarian"). That's where the resemblance ends 🙂

Honestly, I think Edward Cullen is way worse than Dexter. Dexter at least knows he's not a good person. Edward thinks that because he doesn't believe in pre-martial sex he's a good person, in fact a better person than most, in spite of the fact that he stalks and controls his girlfriend. But what else are you going to get from a book written by a mormon?
