In the latest DF Direct Weekly, we take a very early first look at FSR 3.1's improved spatial upscaling, which 'dropped' just prior to recording. The team discuss Capcom's reveal of a NEW Dead Rising remaster/remake, while we have first impressions on a potentially game-changing patch for Dragon's Dogma 2. And just why is PlayStation 5 so technically competitive with Xbox Series X, despite having less horsepower? It's been a mystery for years, but we may finally have some answers.

I swear the From fanbase are the ones keeping the bar so low. The technical issues go way back. Like why can't we have both gameplay and polish, especially now they're making good money. I legitimately think any legitimate video game analyst should not let a game with such technical issues even be nominated or considered for a Game of the Year award. The way Elden Ring came out and remained broken in some aspects fundamentally should have disqualified it from consideration.

@@gothpunkboy89 So do I and from my own personal experience, Elden Ring is one of the most overhyped games because people who love FromSoft games will never admit there is a problem with games that are never truly graphically demanding but always have some sort of performance issue and this is across multiple games, multiple platforms and multiple configurations of PC. Until the FromSoft stans demand better, or at the very least hold them to the same standards as they do every other type of game in the market, we continue to get games like Elden Ring which have addictive gameplay loops which can be a bit unplayable at times because the performance is so hit or miss. @@gothpunkboy89 Your reply is a prefect example of why nuance is so important. Fun is subjective because there are no objective measures for it. How difficulty, art style etc. are perceived is highly individual. Performance is objective. How you perceive it is not. But performance itself can be measured objectively. Metrics like frame rate and frame time are technical measures independent of any individuals perception. So again: No, performance is not subjective. Let's recap on Elden Ring on the DLC release: Console: 1) fps is just unstable in every mode despite the reality that, literally all they'd have to do is scale back whatever it is they are using for upscaling & maybe cut back on some foliage 2) poorly optimized RT (this is consistent across the board) that eviscerates console performance 3) so stuttery overall that certain people justify using the ps4 version on ps5 PC: 1) no way to manipulate framerate caps or go above 60fps 2) janky-ass RT implementation that can look good in certain areas for a huge fps hit, and then in others do almost nothing except AO for no or almost no FPS hit 3) absolutely zero upscaling capability in spite of the janky RT that just eviscerates performance on all but the absolute top-tier GPUs 4) weird freezes on certain hardware (maybe all hardware, who knows, but I've noticed it & Alex points it out as well on diff specs) And all of this nearly 2 1/2 years after release with a near full-price DLC release and we're all supposed to just say nothing because FromSoft is your boyfriend? They aren't even trying, man. I'm sorry I have to tell you, but you are in an abusive relationship. Maybe if you did stand up for yourself things might get better... I'm so not surprised this is the response to serious crticism of anything FromSoft touches at this point. Like, it's hilarious at this point, this isn't even talking about the freaking gameplay and people still feel the need to white-knight for something that is literally observable objective reality that can be represented with data... Nobody is saying you aren't allowed to enjoy the game and because it's a juttery mess you should hate the game... They're observing how it performs on various hardware & reporting on it, as people expect them to. Both Capcom & Team Ninja/Koei Tecmo can patch their janky in-house engine releases after the fact (Dragons Dogma 2 & Wo Long) to include features from this decade and fix optimization, but FromSoft can't? We just have to accept this because it's FromSoft? It's 100% legitimate to ask 'why not' because frankly there isn't a clear answer except perhaps 'because everyone will forgive them anyway', which is sad and worse for everyone. I like FromSoft games, that's why it sucks so much every time I play Elden Ring and think, "man, this experience could be so much better if they just gave one small fraction of a fuck"

As someone who has worked a bit with Unity the camera stutter issue is really annoying and not well documented/agreed upon on how you should fix it. I find that setting interpolation on the target rigidbody is not enough and does not always fix the problem, and I also would not recommend changing the physics update to 60, because ultimately that will still make physics motion weird at higher frame rates and have a hit to performance. The best solution I have found is to just not parent the camera to the rigidbody object and instead have a small script that places the camera on to an empty camera transform each frame (wherever you need the camera to be relative to player location). All that being said if a rigidbody rotates I found it can STILL cause camera stutter even after all of that so I would lock down rb rotation as well. The amount of tinkering and experimentation I had to do to make this problem go away is ridiculous it should be a one-button fix built in to the camera object by default but hey whatever Unity has other priorities I guess. I am also a total novice at game dev so maybe the pros out there have a simple solution but I haven't found it.
@caseydedore
@caseydedore 2 дня назад
You're pretty much finding out how everyone must address this by writing their own solvers. Keep camera control out of the physics update and don't parent the camera to a physics object directly. Since physics updates at a fixed interval and not at refresh rate it will always have some stutter problems even if interpolation helps bridge the gap slightly. I figure Unity wouldn't "fix" the stutter incurred by parenting the camera to a physics object because that's technically behaving correctly.

While it's a perfectly valid method to critique a game (and DF's mandate to begin with), I can see how it would put people off who see Elden Ring as offering a tremendously good value to the customer, especially in this age where good games are rare, and charging a reasonable price for them even more so. These comments defending Elden Ring's technical problems are wild to me. Just vague notions of "fun" and "immersion" and other nonsense that doesn't even attempt to understand the issues. Maybe those people don't notice the performance issues and that's fine, but for people like me who do notice them... When I'm playing a game and constantly noticing the lack of smoothness, the stutters, the technical problems... That breaks any immersion I could have had. Instead of being absorbed in the world I'm constantly reminded that I'm playing a video game that doesn't run properly. I can't have when I'm just thinking "i wish they would fix this already" the entire time I wish these commenters would just be honest and say "I can't notice it so I don't care if it gets fixed" instead of coming up with all that malarkey about why nobody else should have a problem with it either. It needs an entire balance overhaul, everyone is talking about performance but the game is broken in all kinds of ways, unbalanced to the point depending on what class you play the game is either mindlessly click to win (magic archer) or literally unplayable (trickster). The big enemies are also harmless and stagger constantly just from you sneezing at them. Crowd control in general makes enemies just not do anything. The game is not worth replaying until a total rework, I'm not sure if that'll come from Capcom or modders who I personally know are working on this.

Hi Alex. Unfortunately SSDs (if that is in fact where the Horizon vids are) are not thought to be as reliable as magnetic disks for long term storage of unchanging data because SSDs functionally trap an electron as memory instead of memory being a magnetic piece which is just flipped and then is at rest. The mechanism holding the electrons in place within SSDs can deteriorate over time, so I'd recommend cloud or big magnetic hard disks for long term cheap storage which are slow but reliable.

The real problem with games like Forza are the external licences and it is 'illegal' to make money from anothers trademarks/IP's. MS can't sell the game with Ferrari cars if Ferrari aren't getting their money for using their cars. If you 'own' the Disc or Digital version, you can still play as the 'money' you spent to buy the game also gave some money to Ferrari for example - you've paid for a license to access that game. MS aren't producing more Discs and if you can still find New Old Stock, you are still buying a 'licence' to access whatever content you paid for. its 'preserved' for the Owner as long as they keep their account or keep the disc/hardware it was meant for. If you can't buy FH 1-4 anymore, you have 5 to buy/play. If you can't buy Fifa 09 anymore, does that matter with Fifa 20 of FC24 now? Should they be preserved too? Madden as well for example. I don't think every game 'needs' to be preserved and be 'purchasable' indefinitely. In 10 yrs time, with maybe FH6 or even 7 now out, then that is the 'game' people are playing/buying and likely will still be able to play in another 10yrs despite that game being delisted and now FH9 or 10 is out... Unless it gets remastered with modern Physics etc, these games tend to get dated - even the cars you get to use will be considered 'old' in 10yrs time and you can't drive the latest 'supercars'. I can't play Goldeneye today because it feels so old and dated next to modern FPS games despite the 100's of hours I spent playing on N64. I can't play games like Sabrewulf, Knightore, Jet Set Gemini or Perfect Dark. Even Pac-man or space invaders bore the hell out of me today.

regarding "harshness": if i pay full price i expect full quality. its as simple as that. and if reviewers with their outside look can not only identify the issue but offer solutions (without access to source code and all the debugging options that come with this), then it is not too much to ask that studios put in the effort. in the end this is a management and financial issue. its just greed and believing to get away with it. i guarantee that each of the devs would love to put in the time and effort to make the game run better.

Regarding the Unity 50 Hz rant: Interpolation is the sensible solution for anything other than console exclusives as you need a locked framerate for the approach John described (setting tick rate to the equivalent of the target framerate). Also keep in mind that with "tickrate = framerate" if you ever drop one frame you will need to do double physics on the next frame. You need headroom in the cost of the physics or you're turning every single frame drop into a multi-frame stutter incident. However there is at least one way around this: Tie the time to the framerate (so when you drop a frame the time is effectively paused for that frame - no additional physics update is triggered). Now you've basically emulated an old school engine inside Unity. You're effectively doing physics per frame. I think it's an interesting idea for innovative or "retro" indie devs but for bigger companies if they use Unity it's probably because they want to hire from a large pool and they want to iterate and ship quickly. Using such a unique approach to physics is going to confuse devs who are otherwise experienced in Unity. It's going to cost time. The fact that this SMB game uses the default tick rate already speaks volumes. The devs did not want to customize anything unless they needed to. The correct solution for this kind of developer is definitely interpolation.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="70">1:10</a>:20 The question from Wicca I have some massive issues with. Firstly about the layoffs in terms of the state of the industry, Miyazaki has made it very clear they are not laying off staff at From, if anything they are looking at growth but not massive expansion. Secondly there is nothing more immersion breaking than trash frame rates, massive stutters, the game paugin then speeding back up so I completely disagree with the point that From focus on immersion as a well performing game is fundamental to this. As Alex mentioned basic stuff like say fps above 60fps was modded into the game, this mod literally came out within hours of the base games launch and has not been officially supported, that is just pure incompetence to not be done in 2 years. Same for UW support, FoV, getting the game to 60fps on consoles. And anyone who's played the DLC to the end will know how terrible the performance issues can be, i went from 120fps to 29fps during a boss attack. The base game was £50 the DLC was £35, base game has sold over 25 million copies and the DLC has already sold over 5 million. From do not get a pass for making a "fun game" they are one of the worst in the AAA space for technical quality, they need to use that money to hire competent staff. If developers are telling the camera to only update in the fixed update loop at 50hz then the engine is going to do what the developer is telling it to do. Hacking to game to change it to 60hz won't fix the problem if you are at a higher frame rate. The biggest "problem" with negative coverage on any kind of media, but specifically in the case of video game visuals and performance is that while Digital Foundry is (excellently, I might add) creating responsible, nuanced content, the Internet at large isn't using it in a responsible, nuanced way. In fact, it's often used by bad actors as further "proof" as to why a game is terrible and its developers lazy, or worse, they misrepresent what the DF crew create as trying to slander a game such as Nintendo content creators upset at the "Too big for Switch" Tears of The Kingdom debacle. Honestly, this isn't DF's problem as much as the "John Q Internet" needs to be more mature and measured. It definitely makes it less exciting to talk about gaming for sure.

Your death to a boss isn't going to be because of 5 frames dropping. It is because I doge rolled the wrong way or misread an attack and got spanked for it. I like the game, I like the variety of builds and I like the challenge. So I get called an apologist because I'm not raging at something I don't see as a big issue.

@@gothpunkboy89it’s okay that you don’t have a problem with it, but that doesn’t mean that these aren’t objective issues that everyone is dealing with as they play the game. It is apologetic in a way to reply to someone demanding a fix for these issues to say you do not care. Even if you don’t care, surely we can all agree it would be a good thing for this stuff to be fixed, right? At the absolute worst, you don’t notice a difference and those who do will be happier. So shouldn’t we all support those who call for performance fixes in Elden Ring? Or any game for that matter? Like this isn’t a game design decision that people can like or dislike, they’re just performance issues that the game would benefit from not having. There’s not really an argument to be had here beyond “it doesn’t bother me”.
@gothpunkboy89
@gothpunkboy89 2 дня назад
@@paprikayes I said the performance issues where not as big a deal as they where making them out to be. People act like these issues make the game unplayable or will constantly get you wiped by enemies. That isn't true. They then went off on a rant about the game because their FPS counter is more important to them then the actual game play. Better performance is always enjoyed. But is not always nessicary. It is mildly amusing how often people talk about gameplay over visuals. Then you have a developer that embodies that spirit and people are still upset about visuals.
@paprikayes
@paprikayes 2 дня назад
@@gothpunkboy89 I don’t mean to speak for most but I believe when people are referring to gameplay over visuals they are referring to having an issue with the graphics and visual tech introduced in the game taking priority over gameplay. This isn’t really one of those cases, as many people, including me, feel the game is actively worse to *play* as a result of the stuttering. I don’t really find it hypocritical at all for someone to pine for both more gameplay-focused experiences and better running games. It’s really unlikely that person actually cares about their fps counter itself, but rather it’s the easiest way to describe the hitching and performance problems they are experiencing. That’s sort of a bad faith argument to portray them like that. You may not agree that the gameplay is hampered by these problems, and I would also agree that it isn’t going to cause you to die when you otherwise would have survived while fighting a boss in most cases. Regardless of its practical impact on your ability to react to literal attacks, it is an ever present annoyance in the game that is constantly popping up to lessen your enjoyment for those who do actually care about it. Like if every 15 minutes a grating beeping noise went off for a couple seconds when you’re listening to music. It doesn’t really stop you from enjoying the parts where that doesn’t happen, and it won’t stop you from being able to hear the sounds underneath. But it definitely would negatively impact my experience overall.

@@paprikayes > I don’t mean to speak for most but I believe when people are referring to gameplay over visuals they are referring to having an issue with the graphics and visual tech introduced in the game taking priority over gameplay. Graphics and performance are two sides of the same coin for visuals. But people do like to separate connected things so they can complain about one but not another. This stress tests their argument and shows it is wanting. They put visuals over game play. > This isn’t really one of those cases, as many people, including me, feel the game is actively worse to play as a result of the stuttering. And there are people who would say a solid 30 fps is unplayable. And people who would say a solid 60 fps is unplayable. There is always going to be someone complaining about performance because it doesn't reach their arbitrary idea of what proper performance is like. It is why I have such a hard time taking any of these complaints seriously. No one is ever happy. > Regardless of its practical impact on your ability to react to literal attacks, it is an ever present annoyance in the game that is constantly popping up to lessen your enjoyment for those who do actually care about it. And those tend to be the same people who say they can't play a game at 30 fps and even complain about games with 60 fps caps. Even when they run at solid 60fps because it looks stuttery to them. Because to them anything less then 120 is stutters.

I played the PS4 Pro version of Elden Ring on PS5 on a LG G3 65” TV and OMG it looks and runs amazing!. I only notice the low grass density when playing which wasn’t a deal breaker. I suppose the PS5 Pro will run the PS5 version with no issues. At least there’s an option. Still, kind of ridiculous on FROM SOFTWARE’s part. OPTIMIZE MF!!! Lol

I've tested a lot of FSR3.1 and the only major improvement of the upscaler is that the low quality presets (performance/ultraperf) look substantially better than before. Not great but much better. The higher quality presets still have the same issues as before, primarily the disoclussion during rapid movement. In Ghost of Tsushima fast sword movements or fire effect or particles all have that FSR disoclussion, except now it's a bit less pixelated and more smeary. In Horizon it's still pixelated and the water looks bad. In Ratchet & Clank there's a lot of aliasing with 3.1 that wasn't there before, like Clank on Ratchet's back will have very obvious jagged edges even on the quality setting. So the strength of the upscaler's quality/balanced setting hasn't changed too much since 2.1, still looks good and sharp when everything is still but starts having distracting issues once you get moving. I can't say the shimmer is better because in some cases FSR3.1 is less shimmery than before, but in some cases it's more shimmery.

Issue is most reviewers have no standards and are like: Ran at a mostly smooth 60fps on a 4090 at 1440p ultra performance mode great port! Obviously ignoring the fact that is 100% unacceptable performance. A 4090 is a 4k native MAX 70-80fps card

The logic of "X industry is struggling so lets lower our expectations" is so hilarious to me. Like, if the dollar for each consumer is getting stretched thinner then they are going to be more picky about where they spend their money. Being dishonestly "nice" to a developer doesn't do anything besides stroke their egos. If there is fair criticism, it should be levied, for the benefit of all involved.

Strange that FSR has such a large defense brigade who won't allow zooming in. Like...why?
@ledheavy26
@ledheavy26 2 дня назад
I'm not defending fsr being worse but zooming in to a high degree and replaying gameplay slowed down by a significant amount highly distorts the perception everyone will experience at normal viewing distances at higher frame rates. Sitting 2 ft in front of a 4k 48" TV is not what the vast majority of people do (viewers of this channel would be outliers of the larger population). General population are also not going to be so obsessed with looking for discrepancies in visual fidelity as someone with an agenda to document it. I appreciate the work these guys do in terms of analysis, and you can get an objective viewpoint from their findings, but the experience in real life is generally not as overblown if you are just normally playing the game.
@corey_massey
@corey_massey 2 дня назад
No one ever plays a game by zooming in by 200% and playing the game at a quarter of the framerate. The problem with this type of analysis is that is so far removed from how a game looks and performs in normal play that it seems like obsessing over the smallest details that never present themselves in regular play. It's a sign that we are at the point graphically where we are looking for something wrong rather than looking for entertainment and finding something wrong in regular play.

I remember having this 50Hz camera update issue as well. Since it was dependent on following objects that were updated by physics, we actually rewrote the update system for all those objects by doing the physics calculations both in physics update, as well as in the variable update, and then update the camera after both. Really suboptimal, but luckily we did all of our own physics calculations anyway.
