Great video! As someone who’s been making Outcast content since 2014 (and named their channel based on it) I’m so happy to see the series get wider recognition! So many people have missed out on Outcast, and just reading the enthusiasm and intrigue in these comments is making me hopeful for even more Outcast games in the future! I’m loving the game so far!
@@FrenkSummersI think if RU-vid still has that bell button next to my account name you can press that and it will let you know. But I’m planning on streaming from 6pm GMT today :)
The game that had the most impact on me. It was the first game that really took me to another world. Having a blast with outcast 2 on pc at the moment. So much variety and freedom and the vista's look awesome. And still a lot of classic outcast moments in dialogue and gameplay. Music still incredible. I bought al the reboots and digital editions and also backed the kickstarter. Now I have the adelpha edition of outcast 2, so glad this could have happened.
game also pc dvd version. its on german media mark site and amazon. with lord of fallen pc dvd a few games have physcal pc rlease. ı wish ı can buy outcast dvd ı search orginal game too never founded. but ıfound another 99 game visualy amazing like outcast. Nocturne. game ı founded music store oddly with two copies. Nocturne and outcast was same pc demo cds that time blew my mind. nocturne really impact on me too. since then ı told every one there was game better than resident evil and slient hill 2. in here turkey outcast and nocturne scored very high on magazines and both get on front covers. nocturne ı think only get cover here. ı see some uk pc magazines make outcast front cover but not nocturne. recently retro gamer magazine on 2022 cover the nocture 4 pages but front page was street fighter 2 (like not get cover million times). one of issue ı think outcast 2017 on cover.
I loved this game. I was in my first job following medical school, at the Royal Hospital Haslar (no longer exists), and I was a civilian, in a military Mess. Silver service for every meal, leave your shoes outside your door to get them polished by the morning… I was a fish out of water! But I could build a big-rig gaming PC, and Outcast was my escape. The parallels between the sense of military-clashes-with-civilian in-game and my quirky circumstances, was somehow comforting. There orchestral-score, sense of blissed-out exploration and the voxel engine were the escape I needed. I too spent years waiting for the sequel - and it never came. Now, I live down-under, own my own clinic, and while there are still disconnects, I think I can return to Adelpha as a tourist, and enjoy that playfulness, that I always associated with Francophone Devs. Hooray! Sometimes it’s great that there is noting new under the (alien) sun - I hope this ‘drags’ modern players back to the original game too, it did not deserve to be lost to time, just because it trod a different graphical path than the polygonal route that came to dominate.
@@crust5909I’d like to see realistic fluid physics achieved one day and put into a physics driven game like Teardown, The Finals or even HL3. Make a new Gravity Gun that's for fluids or something.
I remember playing the Nomad Soul and Outcast on PC in 1999. My PC was absolutely choking on the latter in 512x284 and I mostly played it in 320x240. Incredible game for its time. Tech was impressive, orchestral music was great and art direction was quite unique despite the obvious Stargate inspiration. Truly a gem that unfortunately many missed out on. Outcast is literally the reason why when I played GTA3 2 years later, I thought it was obviously a great game but was not nearly as impressive tech-wise as the console press made it out to be. I think most people who had seen open world games on PC earlier would have felt the same.
my favorite game was terminal reality Nocturne. ı hope john cover nocturne on df retro bcouse like outcast visiualy amazing. it was better than slient hill 2. like you said playing outcast or before bethesda skynet game open world even driver you dont suprise gta3 that much. and playing nocturne you dont make slient hill 2 or resident evils best games. it was the nocturen best still look good. both outcast and nocturne on demo cds.
i was living in england them, nomad souls and outcast , magnificent games so advance that set what open worlds are today... i remember the feeling of sadness after finish those games i also remember homeworld in the same year another incredible game what a year...
@@AlistairNY Yeah, Quantic Dreams did really well with most of their games. The Nomad Soul was their first if I recall correctly. With the face and music of David Bowie in it !!
I love the original. I never got too far or really understood it but it’s one of those incredibly mysterious old games that really captured my imagination and stuck with me.
same but for me its was 2nd game.ı got demo cd on magazine and outcast demo on there. felt like you in vr that game. but my favorite demo on that cd was Nocturne. outcast and nocturne both graphicly superior that time. try Nocturne its resident evil style game but it was better than slient hill 2. its still look good as ray tracing games such as medium.
That original game is blowing my mind! Those visuals are incredible! A nice HUD? Facial animations?! Interactive water?! Voice acting?! I could go on, it’s gorgeous! How have I never heard of this game before?!
it was on magazine demo cd. have good demo. another 99 game graphiclly amazing was nocturne. both nocturne and outcast was on 99 pc demo cds. outcast suppose to come orginal xbox and nocturne rumored dreamcast buth both never arrive.
@@kupokinzyt bloodrayne was side charater on nocturne. first bloodrayne use some nocturne engine but nocturne was looking better. game wise bloodrayne tphycal game that era. nocturne more like resident evil style. ı like bloodrayne but not level on nocturne for me. devil may cry better clearly. but nocturne was better than slient hill 2 and resident evils.
Had a similar reaction when I learned about this game, I kind of want to acquire a period appropriate PC to play it and really drive home what a technical marvel it is. I'm a somewhat disappointed that the new game doesn't try to do at least one super ambitious thing like the 1999 game.
People keep saying they want more varied, lower budget games, and not just massive AAA titles, let's see how many put their money where their mouth is.
I bought it multiple times i guess 5 in total with digitals and 1.1. And Remake. Two cd versions bc of a patch or a bug that cause the CD to not being recognized 😂.
@@skydivin4ng3l I have a version of the original with a manual in Dutch. Great manual, 40 pages of Outcast goodness. Those were the magical days of gaming, man...!!
Breathtaking visuals - goes to show you that art direction trumps the Engine. It has a Myst/Riven quality to it as well. I was thinking of playing Avatar Frontiers of Pandora but I might give this a try instead.
started playing the remaster and was immediately hooked, my 14 year old self wasn't able to run it on my old Gateway PC back in the day, but this would have been a game I would have lost a loooot of sleep to. Excited to finish up the remake of the original and dive into this one when the release schedule cools down
The game always felt very much like bande dessinée, well i think the devs are belgian so it fits, it was jank but ambitious. The exploration and dialogue feels genuine and not snarky like many modern games. I would never thought a new one would be made which kinda looks like Elex tbh.
Great games - both the original Outcast and the sequel. Tbh I was very skeptical about the sequel - like, what are the chances that they'll do it right after 25 years, right? But they kinda did - which is almost like a miracle, along with the fact the sequel was released at all
I'll admit I wrote most Outcast happenings since the original off because I had no idea the OG developers were involved to the degree that they are :O I have some catching up to do, Outcast was absolute magic and it's one in a line of unrelated games that connect in my mind Another World -> Flashback -> Fade 2 Black -> Outcast 🥰
These games were all made in France and Belgium during the same era. Kind of a "French touch" kind of thing. There was also Little Big Adventure, Rayman, Beyond Good and Evil and Heart of Darkness that had that sort of vibe while being obviously more colorful and aimed at a younger audience. I miss that time, those games were very special I feel.
@@kwxjibo Good Call, I'm still waiting for Beyond Good and Evil 2, or at least a remaster / remake of the original one. Great game with excellent world building !!
@@FrenkSummers Would have loved to see what they could have done with BGE2, but the project is probably dead by now... Especially since Michel Ancel has left Ubi. But yeah, BGE is amazing :)
This was my favorite game back in High School. I am so glad you decided to cover it and that you are shining a light on the tech behind the visuals. Beautiful game. Hopefully you will cover Quest for Glory 5 one day too.
So glad we got a sequel finally after literally decades. As with John, I LOVE Outcast (and the remaster/remake) and have such fond memories of the game and to me it totally still holds up to this day. And the best part so far for me? Outcast A New Beginning is a ton of fun and I'm having an absolute blast with it. I'm only about 2 hours in but other than some meh quest design and a fairly empty open world - it's about as good as I could have hoped for. And yeah, it looks incredible especially considering it's on UE4 and not UE5. Or Unity for that matter.
@@MrVoland44 I know it's made to make you want to explore and "iron man" around on the jet pack etc. But the world is still quite empty otherwise. I'm about 5 hours in now and other than random towns with barely any NPC's (who do all talk to you so far, so that's cool) there's hardly anything to find outside of quests and pre-designed stuff obviously.
Wow! I've never seen such beautiful environments, the art direction is off the hook. Graphically its also super impressive, shocking that they managed to make this in UE4, damn!
Thanks for these insights. Am with you on all of it, John. The game is great, a bit rough around the edges but it's soo definitely outcast. Love it. As I did with the first one
The art direction of the first Outcast was so beautiful. That's why I kinda prefer video games of the 80s/90s/first half of 2000s : PC gaming felt like a very different world compared to console gaming, japanese video games were king and fun and creative and all the graphical imperfections forced everyone to be more imaginative. I know I know, I sound like a boomer XD
check another 99 pc exuslive technical impressive game Nocturne. better than slient hill2 and resident evils. on pc magazine with outcast and nocturne quake 2 or 3 half life oppsing force race graphic awards and Nocturne won.
outcast to morrowind 2year and 6 years to oblivion. before outcast there was bethesda terminator skynet game 3d. elder scrools games was open world but mostly 2dsh syle but skynet game was 3d enough.
Riven vibes. Very strong Riven vibes. Particularly the inner village area with the school in the middle where you learn the base-5 number system and symbols, that you need to take the underwater railway submarine thing to get to.
Awesome video, this is a game series that I’ve literally never heard of and I like to think I have a pretty good knowledge of lesser known games (at least from 2000 onwards). I hope the studio finds success with the latest release, it looks beautiful.
ı quicly test your knowlede from another 99 pc exlusive game. do you know Nocturne game. like outcast it was best graphical game in fact better than slient hill 2 and resident evil 23 with smilar game.
BTW, thats not hyperbole by Mr L. Outcasr was way ahead of its time to the point that it ran terribly on most PCs It was that gens "Can it play Crysis" meme. It was one of those "revied well sold poorly" titles as it was a deeply weird game from design to mechanics to graphics. I still have my copy and this is the first I've heard of a sequel so thank you so much John for giving this game and its legacy the love it deserves.
I remember playing the original on my Pentium 3 450 back in the day. I do remember that PC cost almost £2000, but I remember loving playing the game on it. I'll have to give the 2nd contact 1 a go.
I have the original, and the remake, and although I've not played either of them a ton, I still enjoyed them. I saw this new game coming out and was surprised. I'm glad they made a sequel, and I think it's really cool how incredible the art direction is. Great art direction makes a massive difference. My only hope is that the technical issues UE4 typically has aren't an issue. The combat looks decently fun, and flying around looks really cool. I'll pick this game up some time. :)
Man, that game was magic. Though I don't know if I would have loved it quite as much had I played it in English (even though I normally always go with original VO). Cutter Slade feels rather generic, but in the German version he was voiced by Manfred Lehmann, the voice of Bruce Willis except he made even Bruce Willis better :D
@@AuntieAliasing am talking about nocturne. 99 terminal reality game. slient hill 2 become old gen compared nocturne. its funny that you still get resident evil 2 and slient hill 2 from my comment. its about nocturne. shows how playstation grownig gaming fans. Nocturne is the game. if you dont cover resident evil 2 and sh2 anywhere you auto dismiss already. those games below nocturne tech was for me also game wise. nocturne game impressive as ray tracing games today and out 99 like outcast. they should prey the nocturne not out dreamcast other wise it blow anything on ps1 and ps2 survivor horor genre. it rumored dreamcast but like many things not arrive bcouse of short life on console. same for outcast if it was out on xbox no chance ps2 any open world game.
A dozen hours into this enjoying it a lot. It's nice to play something cheerful and a bit kooky. The jetpack and gliding are very nice. The way it guides you through its own quest logs suggests they know they've laid the subquests on a bit thick, so it's important to mix that stuff with just zooming off to see what's elsewhere...
Great video! I wasn’t familiar with the franchise and when I demoed the new game I was a bit confused as to where it had come from and what the vibe was. This definitely sheds some light on things. Luckily the first game and the remaster are both on sale atm for less than $2!
I wasn't sure what I thought of A New Beginning at first, but after getting a bunch of upgrades, flying all over the place is great, and the combat feels good. It's a really good game. The gun mods are a great concept. I'll definitely play it again in the future. It runs well too (DX12).
I really enjoyed the sequel. I'm kinda surprised how it still feels like authentic good ol's outcast exoerience despite its bigger, and more ambitious scope. Sure, some things in it are very rough and feels like the usual modern open world bloat (not a big fan of those temples activities thing, the fact that those are required for health upgrade makes me hated it even more, it would be great if they're puzzle based like zelda and not this arbitrary "superman 64-like" ordeal) and pretty clunky menu (the act of saving and loading a game is quite a chore), but it gives me more of good times rather than bad. Oh and gotta LOVE the worldbuilding. Its still impressive that a team this small achieve a game this big and rich. Kudos to Appeal team, their dream sequel finally beautifully realized.
Oh my word! The environments in this new game look absolutely amazing! Not just technically but the art direction is beautiful. It seems to have flown under the radar which is crazy.
This is the first time I've come across a 'Sponsored' episode by DF, and I was initially skeptical. However, I must say, this was very informativ coverage of a title. And of course a top-notch presentation thanks to John
I remember outcast back in the day, my pentium could not move the voxel it looked like flash gordon's holiday pics but I played it anyway it was truly special
Wow the new game looks great! Never played the original, but this looks like it could be right up my alley. I'm always a huge fan of games that let you get crazy and don't limit your movement. In a way it reminds me of Breath of the Wild.
Ever since the days of Euclideon Unlimited Detail and the likes, I've been waiting for these guys to make a game that really demonstrates the potential of the tech for the games industry. That was over ten years ago... now I'm starting to think other volumetric representations, from the ML side of things, is going to eat their lunch.
Never played the original and the sequel is actually fun to play, the protagonist is cool, world interesting to explore and its fast paced. They throw you right in instead of having to grind for all the cool stuff. My biggest gripe is the performance issues on PC with areas that are CPU bottlenecked, like the first village area. Frametimes and 1% lows arent very good. Hope they can fix this with patches.
Played the first game in 2001. It was breathtaking. One of my top 5 games of all time. I had a blast exploring Adelpha in all its glory with its regions. I was a bit disappointed at the remake, as I expected better visuals and a better coherence with the original, but can't wait to get into this new one!
Funny how DF compares Cutter Slade to Jack O'Neill, in the french version we had the official voice actor of Bruce Willis doing Cutter's voice. Sadly he passed away few years ago Basically you played Bruce Willis trying to save the world while doing jokes, what a good game!
Fantastic video John and DF Team! I never knew about the earlier Outcast games but my interest is peaked for A New Beginning. I will definitely be checking it out. Content like this which encompasses the history of a game is really entertaining and informative. The passion for the technology in use and development of these games is really fantastic!
Fun fact, Cutter Slade's French voice actor in the original game is Patrick Poivey which doubles Bruce Willis. The fact they have that same cheeky personality in dialogues made me wish a movie adaptation would cast Bruce as the main character. : )
I missed the game back then and knew nothing about it but some reason it had this kind of aura. I understand why now and it's greatly told, what a story! The new game looks fantastic too. Great video, thanks John.
I played that original game with a Microsoft Force Feedback joystick :D. Truly one of the best games I've ever played. It shows its age these days. But in 1999, that soundtrack and world was mindblowing.
I especially like the phantastical designs of the trees. It's a nice art style which captures the feel of a foreign planet better than the more realistic art style of e.g. Avatar.
when ı saw avatar first time immidiatly think outcast game. adialfas basicly brown avatars. maybe james cameron child play outcast and show the cameron. and he combined with terminator aliens millitary. it felt like that.
How does a game from a small studio look this beautiful? Clearly the studio have done great work on the graphics and level of detail, but it also says amazing things about modern tools in general that this is possible with anything other than a massive budget
They got a lot of extra funding via THQ, which bought Appeal a couple of years ago. This is considered to be a AA title, so definitely not an Indy title.
Remember when Outcast first came out and the magazines were split between "this game is incredible" and "this game ignores my expensive new 3d card and I returned it cause it chugs on my CPU" Man this looks good though. Shame there's no marketing campaign to speak of.
I remember this game, it was constantly getting a topic in a game magazine about the developement of the game, and once it came out it was a sort of a above average game, nothin extraordinary.
Games like this speak to a time when some of us were not in such a hurry. There are times when it's good to just enjoy what you have in your hands and appreciate it without focusing on the end of it!
Their commitment to really bad walking/running animations over the years is really impressive. Side note: I don't know if there are settings to reduce pop-in further than what's seen here, but I'm finding it pretty distracting.
I got this game out of a bargain bin in a Babbage's some time in 1999 or 2000 never having heard of it before, it just looked cool on the box and it was only five bucks. And it turned into one of my most fondly remembered and treasured games of all time. There's just something so magical about it. Half of that has to do with the music I think.
outcast is such an amazing game. I just finished the orignal remake for the 2nd time. I played the original when it came out and just fell in love with it. It was great to get that nostalgia when completing second coming. It holds up really well and I'm looking forward to get started on New beginning
The original game is my favourite game of all time, even after placing the pre-order I didn't dare to hope, I tempered my expectations as much as possible to avoid disappointment. Now 20+ hours into a New Beginning I need not have worried. The game is a true sequel to Outcast; the world building and dialogue still sparkle as they did in 1999, the new traversal mechanics and the way the level design takes advantage of them is sublime. Some of the quest design is a little weaker than the original without the big pay off moments and the plot doesn't quite have the same sparkle but overall I have nothing but admiration for the team that refused to give up on the game they'd held in their minds and hearts for nearly 30 years
@@dark1x no worries, I otherwise enjoyed the video! I can appreciate that the original source videos weren't great quality, so it sounds like a tricky situation - you either don't upscale and present a blurry mess, or you try upscaling at the cost of AI artefacts😅
@@dark1x any plan to cover other 99 tecnical imrpessive game Nocturne. outcast was 2nd favorite on 99 for me. nocturne one first. espcialy wondering what alex thing on nocturne bcouse look good as ray tracing shadows and lights.
@@MrStrangermoonAs good as ray-tracing? I’m not dissing Nocturne by any means as I do think it used real-time shadow-mapping really well, but have you seen how much aliasing the edges of the shadows have in the game? That was to prevent late-1990s processors from choking to death, although as the game was almost entirely software-rendered under the hood it still doesn’t run great on powerful CPUs like the Pentium III Katmai (let alone the Pentium II), even with a top-of-the-line 3D card. There is a demo for a 1999 game called Seed (full game was cancelled) that uses real-time shadow-mapping almost as extensively as Nocturne but allowed you to adjust the resolution of the shadow-mapping to really make CPUs of the time scream for mercy. I would however love for Nocturne to be covered (as it is an excellent action-horror romp), along with early Matrox G400-accelerated/EMBM-supported games (that isn’t Expendable) like Dungeon Keeper 2 and Battlezone II
Outcast reminds me a lot of John Carter the movie - I think they could have easily created something that was one of the most successful IPs of all time by creating another planet and universe altogether.
You just directed me to a new favorite gaming history rabbit hole and hopefully a new amazing open world adventure series to fall in love with. Thanks DF!
