2018: 811.F.5 If a player is not present to throw when they are next in the throwing order, and remains absent for at least 30 seconds, the player does not make any more throws on the hole. The player’s score for the hole is par plus four. 2022: 811.F.5 If a player is not present at the start of the round for their assigned group, the player is considered absent and does not play the hole. [2022 separated Absent and Missing into two different bullets.] The 2022 rule is universal for all events, shotgun or tee time, major or c-tier. It’s so dumb hearing everyone complain when the reality is that the tour needs to establish a sense of professionalism so that it distinguishes itself from the amateur side otherwise that hurts things like sponsorships and whatnot. I’ve done theatre through my college years and work service and there was one line that rang true “if you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time you’re late, if you’re late….dont bother showing up” and it makes a statement by abiding by that advice. Since this was a sanctioned round, the TD should be able to assess the penalty via the PDGA tournament manager. I don't like seeing it applied by the card on the scorecard, since it messes with the stats on the hole (can inflate the stroke to par average) and it is also not the card that is stroking him, but the starter, so it is weird to put it on you guys.

@matthewbertram4312

The line is the line. 7 seconds IS the same as 7 minutes. Because you're late. There isn't a scale of penalties for how late you are. If they give one guy 7 seconds but don't give someone else 15 seconds, you risk bias. That's like getting pulled over for speeding and saying, "Come on, it's not like I was going 20 miles over the speed limit." It doesn't matter; if you were still speeding, you're going to get a ticket. The fact that people who call themselves professionals still can't just show up when they're supposed to and whine about it are baffling. If your tee time is 11:35am, and they expect you to be there at 11:30am per the rule, then treat your tee time like it's 11:25am. Those extra 4 minutes of putting practice aren't going to make or break your round. Get to the tee, do whatever you need to stay loose. Move on with your life.

How fast over the speed limit does matter, it's the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony. And cops don't automatically give tickets, sometimes you get a warning. You couldn't have butchered an analogy worse.

Time based rules are complicated because people have different levels of time preference which is BIOLOGICALLY based.

Brodie is right and Paul is not. It's not hard to be on time.

Stupid rule. I don’t like it. But rules are rules.

7 seconds and penalized!? - that’s what, 75 feet away? They saw him coming and closed the door on bro. 😢IMO - players should be physically present 2 min before allotted tee time at hole 1 tee box. 5 minutes seem like the TDs aren’t prepared

This is a bad take. He admitted he broke the rules. He is responsible for being on time.

7 seconds late to something you have to be 5 minutes early for, so he was 4:53 minutes early

1 second late is the same as being 1 hour late. Late is late. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Just be there on time. I have no respect for people who can't be where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be there.

Right? Like unless you were in an accident or something you can’t control happens. Seems like any decent pro would plan on coming to the course an hour early to warm up and practice

@@Ivypoison23 it honestly makes the pro league look like a joke that so many pros are upset they need to be on time for their round.

Mike Birbiglia said it best- "on time" is not a thing- you're either early, or you're late. It is NOT THAT HARD to show up 10 minutes before your tee time. I hate that Drew wrote that he "fell victim" to the rule, as if it wasn't 100% under his control whether he showed up on time or not. You're not a victim of anything. Show up early or get strokes. It's that simple.

Can't be on time when all those vans in the pro parking lot smell like weed. I guess that's why they putt so good with reduced nerves.

Did you fall victim to reefer madness in the 50s and 60s? Or did DARE smooth your brain out?

Uli couldn’t be more wrong. 7 seconds or 7 minutes, a penalty is a penalty. Thats like saying a 6” foot fault is different than someone who take a 2 ft step, is a stroke either way. Rules are rules. Being there 5 minutes early is. Or a big deal, keeps the cards moving and helped to prevent backups. U wanna be called professionals, then be professional.
