As I attempt to describe in this video, the DGT Pi us used to turn your DGT e-Board into a challenging AI opponent as well as offers you a number of other very helpful functionalities that are useful in many different situations of chess analysis. You can use a power brick with the Pi...so an AC outlet would not be required. Thanks for the video. I agree about the lettering issue on the display, but, after some regular use it becomes a non-issue as you get accustomed to reading the peculiar lettering. I love my Pi!

Got it to complement my dgt smart board and play without having to power up my PC, it’s great and offers a lot of flexibility. I highly recommend to switch to community-provided picochess v3 right away since DGT is not providing updates anymore so what you get from DGT is v0.9. With v3 you get new engines and more features, can set DGT Pi to connect to your wifi network (since Pi3 B has wifi!) expose your games via built-in http server or even send them automatically via email (all this requires a few manual configuration steps when flashing SD card; best to use a new SD card and keep the original one as a backup).

The community provided Picochess v3 rocks on the DGT Pi. It transforms the device to multiple engines, a real time hint and analysis feature and voice output of moves and blunders etc. Real game changer, but you need be somewhat tech savvy to do the upgrade.

I was going to mention the v3.x upgrades. You're right about the need for a little bit of head-scratching, particularly with getting it to email your games successfully. I found out it wasn't me or the Pi at fault, just the need for enabling 2-step authentication on Gmail and getting a verification code to add to the configuration file. Was well worth it. About 50 installed engines, including newer versions of Stockfish (15 and 16 even with the NNUE enhancement) and adjustable voice outputs for moves, takebacks, hints and assessments. Not that the out of the box version the DGT Pi comes with doesn't have voice announcements for moves. Anyway, there's help for little problems with initial setup and tweaking on a Google forum site. All in all a good package, especially with the newer updates. With the cost of 16Gb micro-SD cards now, you can keep the original card and try newer software versions for about the price of a pub pint!

Have it and i like it alot. You can use a speaker on it. There are many things you can do with it such as PicoChess. Use it on the DGT e-Boards.

Hi Alex, Could you please do a video throwing out the challenge below to all electronic chess developers: Dear electronic chess developers, Seeing that you have scored successes in development of your boards, I'm challenging you to extend this technology to the game of scrabble? Please develop an electronic scrabble set & app which could include among other things: 1. Choice of dictionary to be used (e.g CSW2021, etc) 2. Choice of rules/ variant/ standard to use 3. Player mode (i.e. 2, 3 or 4 player) & professional/ tournamet mode (timed) 4. Automatic tile recognition 5. Auto cumulative summation & display of scores (normal/ bingos) 6. Challenge button - Rejection of illegal words & associated penalty 7. Audio explanation of word meanings? 8. AI play - Draw tiles & play on behalf of AI (Audio + starting square guide) 9. Not so sure if online play would be feasible? At least they must come up with something electronic, we in the scrabble world are technologically behind!

Scrabble tournaments require overtime penalties. Usually they are 25 or 30 minute games no delay. However, if you run out of time you do not loose. You continue the game but you get 10 point penalty for each minute or fraction of a minute over the time. So therefore the clock counts up once the initial game time (25-30 min.) has expired. So if you go 1 -60 seconds overtime you loose 10 points and for 61-120 seconds over you lose 20 points and so fourth.

I have seen DGT Centaur but I don't know if an e-board with DGT Pi is better.

I am not sure about MAIA, but LC0 is available for the Pi: Lc0 v0.27.0 elo = 2400+ In community created v3.x of Picochess (The DGT Pi comes with PicoChess version about 0.9 installed) As for using a non-electronic board - no, not really. You can (at least in theory) connect it to another computer and have it communicate with it, but it would probably not work as a playing system because you would still need to input moves into the computer that is connected to it. And to the best of my knowledge, the Pi would be a slave unit when used like that. So, I think that it won't suit your stated needs. As for being better than the Centaur, overall the Pi with an e-board is far more capable, mainly because the Pi can have new software installed. The huge number of engines that come with the v3 software is incredible and covers all elo ranges from 100 right up to about 3225. The Centaur is not user upgradeable, even though a lot of people have positive things to say about it.

Centaur is also Raspberry Pi-based chess computer utilizing the single board computer (SBC) Raspberry Pi Zero (with no BT). DGT Pi is using a more powerful Raspberry Pi 3B loaded with old Picochess.
