Indian actor Dhritiman Chatterjee talks about 'Pratidwandi film'.
"Pratidwandi was made in 1970. It was a time when we were all students as well or just out of college. So, we were really part of the 60's generation and therefore the film was relevant to us not only as actors but as people the sort of people we were at that time. It was a reflection of the spirit of the 60's particularly the situation in Calcutta in West Bengal in the 60's, but one later realise talking to people of the film had been made that obviously, people found a much greater if you wanted universal context in it for instance young people in other cities like Bombay, Madras..."

Today there is no director like Ray, Sen and Dasgupta who can fit this type of brilliant actor into their films. Bengal is undergoing the scourge of intellectual bankruptcy.

What made Ray arguably the greatest film maker of his generation - and even beyond - is that he is the only director I know who wrote and produced many of his own films. He was almost a one-man production company. How this man never won an Oscar is something I have never understood. Hollywood, for all its glitz and glamour, has never produced a director like Satyajit Ray. The man was a cinematic genius.

@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 Ray belongs to a generation of filmmakers that we shall never seen again. Ray's goal was to tell a story about the community in which he resided, that is the West Bengal area. Ousmane Sembene had done a similar thing in his native Senegal. Their goal was to tell a story in the same manner as a novel. They had an advantage knowing that the potential to make huge profits was minute, so they could tell their stories without comoromising the integrity of the film. In the West, even in independent cinema, their end game us to get a big producer to pick up their film so they can can get wide distribution.

@@juanestadian8471 I believe you're right Juan. We most likely will never see another film director like Satyajit Ray. And one of the things that made him incomparable is that in some of his film like his Kolkata Trilogy, he puts the viewers in the position of the protagonist and asks them, "what would you do in their position?" It's as if he is almost forcing us to identify with the protagonist while the latter experiences a moral dilemma. And that's the genius of Ray. With other film makers, the audience is very passive but Ray provokes.

One of my favorite actors in Bengali cinema. Just love his voice and acting. Pratidwandi, Ganashatru and Agantuk speak volumes about him. I believe we are now going through a draught in terms of having actors like him.

About Swatilekha Sengupta Manik da commented, his intelligent actress. That is also applicable for Soumitra Chhatterjee ( acted in his 14 films and the good vehicle of his ideas) and Dritiman Chatterjee. Dhritiman alias Protitwondi. Also Mrinal Sen' s Akaler Sandhane is an excellent performance.
