@@Idontlikethisever I like the sharp, crisp tone of the EMG active pickups, plus the BQC control gives a little more output as far as volume and tone.(and all the EMG pickups have solderless connects between the pickups and eq. Try them!

@@josegalindo1262 I have an EMG TWX at the bridge, an EMG TWR at the neck position and the EMG BTC control with 18 volt circuitry. Both pickups can be humbuckers or single coil. The one at the bridge, in single coil mode, it is closer to the bridge, and the one at the neck, in single coil mode, is closer to the neck. If that all make since.

A little more warmth and highs from the Fender but the Dimarzios have much more output and bass in series mode. I had these Ultras back in 99 but don't remember them being this hot. Probably because I had another bass with the Model Js which are also pretty hot and bassy. You should do a video comparing these to the Model Js. You should also review the Custom Shop 60's Jazz pickups. Those have been my choice lately.

I bought these pickups in my custom built Jazz bass to replace the Fender AVRI that were in there. I wanted noiseless pickups but still keeps some of the single coil characteristics. I must say, I was very disappointed. Not that these are bad pickups but not for me. I will say that they are bright and have a punch low end but a very sterile scooped midrange. I definitely prefer the AVRI's growly midrange as these are very clean. If you like slapping than these are great pickups for that but for fingerstyle rock and funk, the sound kind of disappears and even boosting the mids on my GK amp didn't really help.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
Did you wire them in series or parallel? I find they are quite thin if wired in parallel, but have a nice clear and well-balanced sound in series. Not as much punch or midrange as the model Js, but still nice enough
@garyzito1860
@garyzito1860 Год назад
@@OliverTobyn I wired them in Series. They were too scooped to my liking. The Model Js are too dark, even with 500k pots. If you turn up the treble to compensate, they sound kinda strange. I think vintage spec Alnico 5 pickups are my favorite. The Fender American vintage are my favorite set and they come stock in the Geddy Lee.

Hi. I noticed you also demoed the Duncan SJB-3 set. How would you say the Ultra Jazz set compares to the quarter pounders? Thanks for your time and great playing as well.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
Thank you! I'd say that the Ultra Jazz is more "fine tuned" and has better dynamics. It's overall more focused as a pickup but still has quite a beefy sound since it's a split coil. The SJB3 is a very loud pickup, with tremendous attack and loads of low end but overall has a blurrier, and dirtier sound

I have a Fender J bass and have thought about buying these on and off for years. Can someone help me though? When I buy these and have a tech install them, do I ask the tech to do Series or Parallel? Sorry for the dumb question as my I still have a difficult time understanding what that means and how it affects any humbucking qualities.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
They usually wire them in series, that's the standard. I'd go with that, as parallel can sometimes be too thin sounding
@swramplifiersmariopettinao

Adjust the volumes of the two to the same output and there will be almost no difference between the two pickups under consideration, this demo makes no sense done this way..The ear will always prefer the one with the loudest volume!

I disagree, there is a difference. Fenders have more balance and mids, Dimarzio, more scooped and hifi

I have someone do my installs for me. Need I specify which way I want them wired? Are there instructions supplied with the product to show wiring both ways? Sorry if the question sounds elementary but that type of work is foreign to me! Thanks.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
No worries, we are all ignorant at some point :) There are some instructions on the website if I'm not mistaken, but I honestly find the parallel setting pretty useless, the series sounds much fuller. Just specify you want them wired in series, and the guy should know how to do it

@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
@@shawnray2941 that would depend on which pickups you have installed, not all of them have the series/parallel option. Each Di Marzio pickup has two coils inside (like a Precision Bass pickup) which can be wired in both ways. But traditionally Jazz pickups are single coils which can be wired one way only

Awesome video. Very useful. I was consindering these for passive replacement but don't think they are as good in passive mode. I used them in a mod with Fender's deluxe active jazz bass preamp back around 20 years ago and it had such a thick & punchy tone. But now in a passive setting, they somehow sound really thin.

hey man😁Is the wire of ultra jazz humcancelling by two wire (left and righ or up&down). i have a duncan stk-j 2, it is up&down humcancelling,but it's tone like hotter than fender stock. So i wander if the ultra J is seried like p bass? after all, had you tried to combine one hum j with single coil j, i am curious about this couple.😝😝

Are Jazz basses normally set as Series or Parallel?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
Careful, Jazz Basses normally have single coils, which are wired in parallel. In this case each pickup has two coils, which can also be wired in series and parallel which is what I demonstrated here. Each pickup was wired both in series and parallel to itself (because of the two coils) but always in parallel to the other one
@louierubio
