DIABETES TRAVELLING DISASTERS: learn from my mistakes

Coming out of the pandemic and returning to normal life, things are not the same. I feel like maybe long stretches of time with limited freedoms somehow put me out of practice with normal life. Unfortunately for me normal life includes daily management of type 1 diabetes, which in turn requires planning. Especially when travel is involved.
Usually getting properly ready for a trip requires at least a week of physically collecting diabetes supplies and several weeks before that stressing about making sure you’re ready for that week before the flight. This means restocking pump supplies, ordering more if that’s needed and getting the right documents to show just in case.
Something was different on this latest trip to Dubai. Bear in mind that just a few weeks before I’d successfully managed to get myself to Amsterdam and have a successful trip without any diabetes disasters. Maybe it was because I’d travelled there before, maybe it was because I was lulled into a false sense of security by the much shorter Amsterdam trip. Whatever happened it didn’t go to plan. I’m not sure there even was a plan.
When it comes to making sure I’ve got everything I need I usually rely on lists. However, not a single list was made in preparation for a week in Dubai. I trusted my gut and threw things into a case confident that I had more than enough to see me through.
My first trip to Dubai was in a much hotter season than my most recent one. It was so hot that I barely needed any insulin at all. I wore my pump only a few times in my whole stay. This time around it was a lot cooler and there was much more food!
Pump sites falling out because of suncream, sensors ripped off by pulling on clothes, and insulin pens lost on drunken trips home in a taxi. In this video, I detail what I learned from my mistakes so you don’t have to have a stressful trip like I did!

I've had so many failed T-slim infusion sites that I now keep the old infusion site in my body, and cap it with the cover they give you for using in a pool, and keep it there until I know that the newly inserted infusion site works. Usually this is about a half a day. This way I can use the old one as a back up. After having type 1 over 35 years, I still encounter problems in being prepared. Sometimes I make the mistakes and other times, insurance companies make them and don't send supplies in time as well. Good luck and enjoy the memories from your trip!

Thanks for the video Jamie. I have had type 1 since the 1970's and have travelled to all parts of the world with only the syringes and insulin in bottles (now using a pen) like you described your video and with only urine tests to test my sugar levels! However what I have always done and continue to do is 2 and half times what I need for the trip and then do another kit and give to someone else who is travelling with me. Probably over doing things and only on one occassion have I used the spare set becuase I had made a mistake in my set when I packed, I know! Keep up the videos they are great to watch and very good. Lets hope a cure comes soon eh!

Sadly there's no relaxing from T1. This video is great for others to see what can easily go wrong. Like boy scouts are taught "be prepared"
